The unplanned guest
"I didn't know!" he exclaimed, his voice breaking. "I swear, Bella. I had no idea."
"Why didn't you tell the police that?" I demanded.
"I did! But they didn't believe me. And when they asked me about my boss, I had nothing to give them. We never met face-to-face. The packages were left at a pickup point, and we got paid after the drop-off."
I shook my head, struggling to process the revelation. "What about the addresses or phone numbers? Didn't the police find anything?"
"Nothing," he said, defeated. "Whoever's behind this knows how to cover their tracks."
"This doesn't make sense," I muttered, pacing the small hospital room. "The lawyer should be investigating this. They need to find the real culprits and clear your name."
He sighed. "They're trying, but it's not that simple. These people are dangerous, Bella. And they have connections."
