Chapter 9 - Chapter Nine: Shadows of Accountability

Scene 1: Clashing Shadows Outside the Hall

The heavy double doors of the grand royal chamber stood closed, carved with intricate symbols that gleamed faintly in the flickering torchlight. Outside, Chief Lorvan stood with his arms crossed, his expression dark and brooding. Beside him, Kopaik shifted uneasily, his nervous energy evident.

Chief Lorvan (whispering sharply, his voice low but biting): "Let me handle your mess, Kopaik. Don't give them any reason to suspect us."

Kopaik (nodding quickly, his voice barely audible): "I won't, Chief Lorvan. You have my word."

As their whispered conversation trailed off, the sound of approaching footsteps filled the corridor. Chief Kaedan emerged from the shadows, his composed presence commanding attention. Walking beside him was his youngest son, Kaezan, his hand resting lightly on the hilt of his sword. Behind them, General Solmar entered with his usual air of confidence, his sharp eyes scanning the hall. Trailing behind the group was Kurama, Kaedan's eldest son, his quiet intensity adding to the group's formidable presence.

Lorvan's lips curled into a sly smirk. He leaned slightly toward Kopaik, ensuring his voice carried just enough to reach Kaedan's ears.

Chief Lorvan (mocking): "Oh, look who's here, Kopaik! The greatest army chief we've ever had—protector of the palace."

(Kopaik's lips curled into a malicious grin, and Lorvan turned fully to face Kaedan, his expression darkening with mockery.)

Chief Lorvan (his tone sharp and cutting): "Tell me, Chief! How exactly do you plan to protect the kingdom when you can't even secure the palace you are in charge of? Should we be worried?"

Kaezan's eyes flared with anger as his grip on his sword tightened. Beside him, Kurama's piercing gaze fixed on Lorvan, his jaw tightening in silent disapproval. However, General Solmar was the first to speak, stepping forward with a firm tone.

General Solmar (calm but pointed): "And what do you know about protection? Bookworm…"

(Lorvan's smirk disappeared as his face hardened, his voice rising with irritation.)

General Solmar (Continuing): "You're quick to throw accusations, but I doubt you'd last a minute outside your library walls."

Chief Lorvan (angrily):  "Hah! A bookworm, am I? That's rich coming from someone who relies on brute force instead of strategy. And you, Chief Kaedan—what's your excuse this time? An intruder breached the palace under your watch, soldiers perished on the borders, and now we stand on the brink of war. How many more mistakes must we endure before you acknowledge your failure?"

(Kaezan took a step forward, his young face flushed with anger.)

Kaezan (firmly, his voice shaking slightly): "You have no right to speak to my father like that! His reputation is built on decades of loyalty and strength. And you—"

(Chief Kaedan gestures sharply, halting Kaezan mid-sentence. The anger is still evident in Kaezan's expression.)

Chief Lorvan (mockingly): "And who are you to defend him, boy? Another untested brat hiding behind his father's name?"

(Before Kaezan can respond, Kurama steps forward. His voice is calm, but carries an unmistakable edge.)

Kurama (with quiet intensity): "You'd be wise to watch your tongue, Lorvan. Insulting my father and brother may not end as you expect."

As the tension reached its peak, the sound of approaching footsteps broke the moment. Lady Elysia, Chief Rael, and Chief Healer Eldrin arrived, their eyes darting between the agitated group. Chief Kaedan finally spoke, his tone calm and steady, yet carrying an undeniable weight.

Chief Kaedan (to Lorvan, his voice unwavering): "I don't owe you an explanation, Lorvan. Do your own work and stop meddling in mine."

(His gaze shifted to Kopaik.)

Chief Kaedan (Continuing): "And you'd do well to be careful as well. There's an old saying: one rotten apple spoils the whole barrel. Be mindful, Lorvan, and don't let someone else's bitterness corrupt you."

(Kopaik's nervous smirk vanished, replaced by a flash of anger. Lorvan, however, stepped closer, his voice rising as his temper flared.)

Chief Lorvan (challenging, his tone biting): "You're old now, Chief Kaedan. Your days of glory are over. I could defeat you myself and prove to everyone that you're no longer fit to lead!"

Before Chief Kaedan could reply, the heavy doors to the meeting hall swung open. King Solomon, accompanied by Prince Salvini and Queen Marissa, entered the scene with quiet authority. The king's gaze swept over the group, a faint smile on his lips.

King Solomon (lightly, his tone carrying a hint of amusement): "Lorvan! That was quite the joke and a bold one, too."

(The entire group, straightened, bowing their heads respectfully.)

King Solomon (his smile fading, voice deepening): "Let me remind you, Lorvan—Kaedan is not someone to be taken lightly. He could defeat you perhaps a hundred like…you, with his eyes closed and no weapon in hand. Moreover..."

(The king's expression darkened, his voice firm and warning.)

King Solomon: "Do not interfere in matters you don't understand. Speak only when you are asked to do so otherwise, stay silent."

(Lorvan's face flushed with anger and humiliation, but he said nothing. Kopaik looked down, shifting uncomfortably under the king's gaze.)

Meanwhile, faint smiles appeared on the faces of everyone except Lorvan and Kopaik, who watched in silence as Lorvan's humiliation unfolded. Kaedan's eyes met the king's, a silent exchange of loyalty and gratitude. Beside him, Salvini shared a brief, understanding glance with Kaezan.

With a signal from the king, the doors to the council chamber swung fully open. One by one, the group filed inside, leaving behind the echoes of tension that lingered in the hallway.

Scene: The Council's Reckoning

The scene opens in the grand royal chamber, where King Solomon sits on a large, ornate throne. The backrest is shaped like a flaming symbol of the Fire Nation, giving the king an imposing presence. Beside him, Queen Marissa sits on a smaller throne, regal but slightly less adorned, her sharp eyes scanning the room, taking in the reactions of each council member. Before them, the council members stand in two rows—half on the left and half on the right—each representing the powerful chiefs and influential figures of the kingdom. The prince is on the right at first place, followed by Kaedan and others in their respective order. The recent events were weighing heavily on their shoulders. The tension in the room is palpable as the conversation begins.

King Solomon (addressing the council, his tone commanding yet composed): "Council of Ignisara, may our flames burn bright as a beacon for humanity. I am watching some new faces among us today."

The king's piercing gaze shifts toward Hadimi, who stands behind Eldrin. The 17-year-old boy, with his hazel eyes, tousled brown hair, and freckled face, tries to hold his composure under the weight of the king's scrutiny. Next, the king's eyes move to Kaezan and Kurama, positioned behind Kaedan, their stances firm and resolute. His gaze then shifts to Aelira, who stands with quiet confidence behind Elysia. The 18-year-old carries an air of calm authority, her wavy silver-blonde hair falling gracefully down her back, and her piercing emerald-green eyes reflecting her sharp awareness of the room. Finally, the king's attention lands on Salvini, his presence commanding respect even among the gathered council.

King Solomon (continuing, his tone sharp as his eyes narrow at Kaedan and Solmar): "Some of us have made mistakes—grave mistakes—that tarnish not only their own reputations but also the honor of this kingdom. Allowing a stranger to infiltrate our palace, despite what we pride ourselves on as 'top-notch security,' is no small failure. Kaedan… Solmar… what do you have to say in your Defense?"

(Kaedan and Solmar bow their heads in shame. Kaedan hesitates, his voice faltering as he speaks.)

Chief Kaedan (hesitant, his tone heavy with regret): "Your Majesty… we are deeply ashamed of what we—"

King Solomon (cutting him off with a stern voice): "Enough, Kaedan. We will address this matter later, but do not forget—every one of you must atone for this failure. For now, I have concerns that are more important. Did you send the dragon riders to the other nations? And what measures have been taken to protect the villagers from the impending war?"

Kaedan (nodding, his voice steadying slightly): "Yes, Sire. I have dispatched the dragon riders to all allied nations. As for security, General Solmar and General Calvus will elaborate."

General Calvus, the brave and loyal army strategist, steps forward. Tall and muscular, with clean-shaven features and commanding black eyes, he exudes authority. Known for his exceptional military leadership, he signals to the soldiers at the chamber doors.

General Calvus (authoritative): "Bring the maps and models."

The soldiers nod and quickly bring four wooden tables, arranging them in a straight line before the council. They then place detailed maps and scaled models of Ignisara and its capital, Pyronis, upon the tables. King Solomon, Queen Marissa, and Prince Salvini move closer to the display, joined by the rest of the council members.

General Calvus (pointing to the map, his tone precise and clear): "Your Majesty, these are the fortified points within Pyronis. We have increased patrols across the eastern and northern gates, where the breach occurred. Archers and mage sentries now guard the perimeter day and night. Additionally, we've stationed elite units on the rooftops of key towers to ensure aerial vigilance."

(He moves a small model dragon rider on the map to represent the allied nations.)

General Calvus (continuing): "The dragon riders carry messages requesting reinforcements and alliances. They are instructed to prioritize speed and discretion. Our first response might come from Luxara, as they are closest geographically."

General Solmar (stepping forward, his voice steady and authoritative): "While the dragon riders are our primary means of communication, I've also dispatched messages to the governors of each fort, city, and town within Ignisara. Troops are being mobilized across the kingdom. Our soldiers are patrolling the streets of every city and town, ensuring the security of civilians and fortifications alike. Each governor has been instructed to station their troops on the walls and towers of their respective forts, and to reinforce any vulnerable points in the defenses."

The room falls silent as the council considers the magnitude of the strategy.

Lady Elysia (graciously, but with a hint of concern): "Once the other nations accept our alliances, we must be prepared for what comes next. Particularly with Aquagelida—our long-standing rival. The history of wars between our nations has been fraught with bloodshed. Their response could be unpredictable, depending on how they perceive our intentions."

(The weight of the words hangs in the air as the council absorbs the potential consequences.)

King Solomon (nodding, voice measured): "Good. Ensure there are no lapses. Every detail matters now—especially with the threat of Aquagelida looming. We cannot afford any weaknesses."

The council chamber was quiet, the heavy air filled with the weight of responsibility. The tension was palpable as the kingdom's leaders convened, each aware of the looming threats pressing in from every direction. The only sound was the soft crackling of the torches lining the walls.

King Solomon stood at the head of the table, his gaze steady and sharp. Beside him, Queen Marissa, with her long, curly blonde hair and gentle yet commanding presence, stood watching him intently, her eyes filled with concern. Across from them, Lady Zoriana, the tall and elegant head of the Royal Intelligence Network, stood poised. Her dark almond-shaped eyes gleamed with calculating intensity, and her silver-blonde hair cascaded neatly down her back, framing her regal features.

King Solomon (his voice firm, yet with a hint of concern): "Lady Zoriana, tell me, did our spies provide any intel about the other nations? What are their conditions, and is there anything of particular importance we should know?"

Lady Zoriana (responding with calm authority, her voice carrying the weight of her position): "Yes, Your Majesty. I have just received the latest reports from our men. Those beasts have attacked every nation, and all are deeply concerned about the threat. They have lost many soldiers in these attacks, but they are unaware of the war that is brewing. The beasts are the immediate focus for everyone."

(A murmur of concern rippled through the council as the implications of this news settled over the room.)

Queen Marissa (her voice laced with worry): "Have our dragon riders reached their destinations yet?"

Lady Zoriana (nodding solemnly): "Your Majesty, even if they have reached their destinations, it will take time for our men to relay the full extent of the situation back to us."

King Solomon (his brow furrowing as he turned his attention to Chief Rael): "Chief Rael, what are the conditions of trade and markets? Has the increased security affected trade?"

Chief Rael (his round face etched with concern, his sharp eyes reflecting his understanding of the kingdom's economy): "Yes, sire. The sudden deployment of troops and the increased security measures have given the traders a clear indication of the turmoil we are facing. While we've tried to keep this under wraps, some traders and merchants have taken their goods and left, fearing what's to come. As a result, the prices of essential goods have risen sharply, and there is a growing concern that this could lead to food shortages."

(The room fell silent as the weight of the economic strain became apparent. The tension in the air thickened, as each person considered the broader consequences of this news.)

Finally, Former Chief Scholar Altesh, an elderly man with flowing white hair and a long, braided beard, his glasses perched at the tip of his nose, broke the silence. He had been quiet up until now, watching the proceedings with keen interest.

Chief Altesh (his voice calm but firm): "Don't worry about that, my friends. I have some sources we can rely on to handle the situation. Rael, meet me after the conference, and we will make a deal with those merchants. I'm confident we can stabilize the situation."

Chief Rael (nodding respectfully): "Understood, sire."

King Solomon (smiling faintly, a glint of admiration in his eyes): "Problem solver, as always, Master Altesh. After all, you were the one who taught me how to think this way. This is why I don't let you rest —Your wisdom is invaluable."

Master Altesh (bowing slightly, his voice warm and humble): "Your Majesty, the honor has always been mine. Guiding you and witnessing the leader you've become is the greatest reward for any teacher."

(Nodding at Altesh with a faint smile, King Solomon's expression softened briefly before turning back to Rael, his demeanor becoming serious once more.)

King Solomon (his voice sharp): "Rael, remember—don't burden our people. If the prices of products keep rising, the common folk will suffer. You have to keep an eye on this. I trust you because that's why I gave you this position."

Chief Rael (with a determined nod): "Of course, Your Majesty. I'll make sure we find a solution that keeps the people safe."

The King then turned to Chief Healer Eldrin, a tall, older man with flowing white hair and a long, bushy beard. His deep blue eyes were filled with wisdom and an unshakable calm. He had seen countless battles and dangers and was known for his cool demeanor in the most intense situations.

King Solomon (nodding respectfully): "Chief Eldrin, are the healers ready? We may need them on the front lines soon."

Chief Eldrin (with quiet confidence): "Your Majesty, you of all people know that our healers are always prepared. They are not just skilled in mending wounds—they are capable of fighting on the front lines if necessary."

King Solomon (chuckling lightly): "Haha, yes, Chief Eldrin. I know how capable they are. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated group."

The King's gaze then shifted to Chief Lorvan, who had been unusually silent. Lorvan, a tall and stern figure, with a sharp jawline and eyes that seemed to constantly be calculating, had been quiet for longer than usual.

King Solomon (raising an eyebrow): "Why are you so quiet today, Lorvan?"

Lorvan (his voice tinged with unease): "Your Majesty, I am simply contemplating the incoming threat. There are also some... leaks in our security. As you know..."

King Solomon (his voice rising with anger): "I've already told that everyone involved in the security failure will pay for their negligence! Why bring it up again?"

Lorvan (calm but persistent): "I am not bringing this up for no reason, Your Majesty. I mean Kopaik here. He has something important to report."

Everyone turned their gaze to Kopaik, the sly mage who had always been known for his obsession with forbidden knowledge. His dark cloak hung loosely around his form, the fire symbol of Ignisara emblazoned on its front. His expression was tense.

King Solomon (his tone demanding): "What happened, Kopaik? What is it that you want to report?"

Kopaik (his voice tight with anxiety): "Your Majesty... the stone. The one we found in the hand of Prince Salvini when he was attacked on the mountains... It was stolen from my experiment chamber last night."

The room grew tense as Salvini's face turned pale, his widened eyes betraying a sudden, inexplicable nervousness. Though no one else had yet noticed, King Solomon's sharp gaze locked onto him.

King Solomon (his voice cold as ice, his eyes narrowing): "Salvini... seems like you know something. Speak."

The council chamber was filled with a heavy silence as the tension in the room thickened. King Solomon stood at the head of the long table, his expression cold, his eyes scanning each of the gathered faces. He was waiting for an answer, his patience tested to the limits.

Salvini, standing still and unblinking, felt the weight of his father's gaze. His face grew pale as he suddenly heard Hamza's voice in his mind. "Hey, don't just stand there. Start speaking! Isn't that the stone you were holding in the room?"

Salvini hesitated, his mind racing. Yes, it is the stone, he thought, his heart sinking. I stole it, and you know as well as I do that it is incredibly important for us.

Hamza (voice was calm but firm): "Then what will you say to your father?"

Before Salvini could respond, King Solomon's commanding voice broke through, loud and clear. "Salvini, I am talking to you. What is it? Do you know something about the stone?"

The room fell deadly silent, every eye turning toward Salvini. His nervousness was palpable, and the guilt on his face could not be masked. Kopaik, Lorvan, and everyone else looked at him with growing concern. Behind them, Kaezan stood beside his father, Kaedan, his face tense but unreadable.

Salvini (now aware of the weight of his secret, exhaled deeply before speaking up.): "Sorry, Father, I was trying to focus on the details. Yes, I have seen the stone. Last night, I saw it in the hands of the strange woman who broke into our palace."

Kaedan sighed deeply, his disappointment clear. He closed his eyes, unable to meet King Solomon's gaze. Meanwhile, Lorvan couldn't hide the evil smile that crept onto his face, as though he had won some sort of silent victory over Kaedan's earlier argument.

"So she took it, then?" Lorvan's voice was almost mocking.

(King Solomon's eyes narrowed in thought, and he stood still for a moment before responding.)

King Solomon (voice measured but firm): "Yes, Kaedan and Solmar, both of you might understand now the consequences of your failure. It is a shame that two of the elite warriors failed to protect their own palace."

Both Kaedan and Solmar bowed their heads in shame. Kaezan, standing behind them, also lowered his gaze, showing his respect but keeping his own thoughts to himself. Kurama, however, stood apart from the group, his posture stiff. His eyes, though, betrayed a flicker of anger, though he quickly concealed it.

(Before anyone could speak further, King Solomon turned to Kopaik, his expression now one of renewed focus.)

King Solomon: "Kopaik, what was that stone worth? Do you know its significance?"

Everyone's attention turned to Kopaik, the weight of the question hanging in the air. Meanwhile, Hamza's voice echoed in Salvini's mind once more.

Hamza: "Will you tell your father about the importance of the stone?"

Salvini (hesitated before replying): "No, not yet. We must act without him knowing anything."

Hamza (responded simply): "Okay."

Kopaik (cleared his throat, stepping forward): "Your Majesty, I was working on the stone and, through some ancient texts, I have learned that..." He glanced at Lorvan, who subtly shook his head in disapproval. Kopaik continued regardless, "...this stone is used for portal magic. It may have been the very thing, that monster used to travel to the mountain."

Lorvan, unable to contain his frustration, made a quick gesture for Kopaik to stop. King Solomon, however, mumbled under his breath, "So why did she steal it?"

The king's voice rose again, this time with undeniable authority,

King Solomon: "Kaedan, Solmar, it was stolen because of your mistake. Now it's up to both of you to find that stone and bring it back."

Both Kaedan and Solmar straightened their resolve hardening. In unison, they replied, "As you wish, Your Majesty."

King Solomon gestured to the soldiers standing at attention. They began clearing the table, picking up the models and maps, while the king and queen took their seats on the throne once more.

"Now, the most important matter before us," King Solomon began, his voice firm with resolve. "We must send an adventurer party that will travel across all the nations, carrying a message of peace and gathering alliances for the upcoming war. Queen Marissa will announce the members of the party."

Queen Marissa stood gracefully from her throne, her voice dignified and strong.

Queen Marissa: "It is an honor for me to name the members of the adventurer party. I trust that you will represent Ignisara well, and may your mission bring us success."

She then gestured to members as their names called. "Kurama, named by the king himself, from the troops of Chief Kaedan. Aelira, named by Lady Elysia, from her own troops. Hadimi, named by Chief Eldrin, from his own forces." As each name called, the individuals bowed respectfully.

"And finally, there is one more member, who is not present here at the moment, but is an essential part of this party. From the troops of Lady Zoriana, named by her—Veyra."

King Solomon turned to Lady Zoriana. "Where is he, and why is he not here? What kind of character is he?"

Lady Zoriana replied, "He will arrive shortly, Your Majesty. He is returning from an important mission. He is incredibly skilled as a spy and intelligence collector. At just 17, he earned the title 'Shadowveil' from our squad. His fighting skills are also formidable, and he is a ruthless assassin when needed."

Just as she finished speaking, the doors to the council chamber swung open, and a figure entered. He wore a black shawl that concealed his body and head, but beneath it, he wore the armor of Ignisara. With a swift, practiced motion, he disassembled the shawl, revealing his true appearance, and bowed to the king. "Your Majesty."

Queen Marissa smiled, nodding. "Here he is, Your Majesty. Our Veyra Shadowveil."

King Solomon raised an eyebrow but maintained his composed demeanor. "How did your mission go, boy?"

Veyra responded coolly, his voice low and measured. "It went smoothly, Your Majesty."

Queen Marissa then gave a brief but encouraging speech, raising the morale of the adventurer party members, urging them to carry out their mission with honor and determination.

King Solomon, now focused, turned to the party once more. "Pack your things. You leave tomorrow. Kurama, I am appointing you as the leader of this party."

Kurama bowing his head replied, "It is an honor for me, your majesty"

The king looked at the group with a sharp gaze, his voice carrying authority. "Now go, prepare yourselves…Dismissed."

As the council chamber emptied, King Solomon remained seated, his mind already planning for the next steps ordering only Salvini, Kaedan, Kaezan, Master Altesh, Lady Elysia, Lady Zoriana, and Queen Marissa to stay.

The storm was coming, and the fate of Ignisara was uncertain.

Scene 3: The King's Unyielding Decision

The grand council chamber now stood eerily silent, the air heavy with tension as King Solomon descended from his elevated throne, each step deliberate and commanding. Queen Marissa followed, her golden dress flowing elegantly as she moved, a silent but powerful support to her husband.

Inside Salvini's mind, Hamza's voice echoed, full of curiosity and concern.

Hamza: "What's happening, brother? What's your father going to say?"

Salvini: "I don't know... And did you just call me brother?"

Hamza: "Back in my world, we call our friends brothers. It's a sign of trust."

Salvini: "Is that so..."

Their mental conversation interrupted as King Solomon began to speak, his deep voice resonating in the chamber.

King Solomon: "Salvini!"

The prince immediately straightened, his gaze locking onto his father's intense eyes. The others—Queen Marissa, Kaezan, Kaedan, Lady Zoriana, and Lady Elysia—shifted their attention, sensing the gravity of the moment.

King Solomon: "Son, I need you to answer me truthfully. No lies, no half-truths. Will you do that?"

Salvini (loudly): "Yes, Father. I will be honest."

The King's expression softened slightly, but his tone remained firm.

King Solomon: "Then tell me this, Salvini—have you gained control over your powers?"

Salvini hesitated, his hands clenching into fists. He lowered his head, shame washing over him.

Salvini (Disappointingly): "No, Father... I haven't. Yesterday, during my fight with that strange woman, I lost control again."

His voice wavered, and his shoulders trembled as he fought back tears. Queen Marissa, her heart breaking for her son, stepped forward and placed a gentle hand on his shoulder.

Queen Marissa (cheering him up): "It's all right, my son. You've been trying your best."

Kaezan, standing nearby, felt a pang of sympathy for his closest friend. Even Kaedan's stoic demeanor showed hints of regret.

King Solomon's piercing gaze softened only slightly before he spoke again, his words cutting through the air like a blade.

King Solomon (taking a deep breath): "I know, son. I saw the scorch marks in the hallway where you fought her. Your power surged uncontrollably again. That's why I've made my decision."

The chamber seemed to hold its breath.

King Solomon: "I am sending you away from the palace."

The declaration hung in the air like a thunderclap. Gasps filled the room as everyone tried to process what they'd just heard. Salvini's eyes widened in shock, his mind reeling.

Queen Marissa (Worriedly): "Solomon! How could you say that? He's our son!"

She turned to him, her voice trembling with disbelief.

Kaedan (shocked): "Your Majesty, with all due respect, this is too harsh. The prince is progressing. I'm confident he will learn to control his powers soon!"

Master Altesh (thoughtfully, calm demeanour): "Solomon, this decision seems... unreasonable. What purpose will it serve?"

Lady Zoriana and Lady Elysia exchanged concerned glances. Even Kaezan appeared stunned, his loyalty to his friend battling with his respect for the King's authority.

Salvini, however, stood frozen, his body trembling as the weight of his father's words settled over him.

As the King dismissed the gathering, Salvini stood there, grappling with the reality of what lay ahead. The journey to self-discovery had begun, but it came with a price neither he nor his family had expected.
