Chapter 9 - 9

Eli navigated the crumbling streets of New Haven. The skyline, once dotted with glimmering towers, now lay in ruins—remnants of a world consumed by nuclear fire. The air was thick with ash and the acrid scent of burnt metal, a constant reminder of the chaos that had engulfed humanity.

With each step, she felt more trapped—caught in her desperate need to save Rai, the one person who had always been her anchor amidst the turmoil. They had shared childhood dreams beneath the twilight sky, promises to protect one another from the horrors of the universe. But now, those dreams felt like shattered glass, cutting deep into her soul.

Eli's communicator buzzed violently, breaking her from her thoughts. She fumbled to answer it, and Alia's frantic voice flooded her ears. "Eli! You need to see this. The CCTV footage from the military outpost shows Rai—he's been taken by the same organization that attacked the lab!"

Panic surged through her, twisting her insides. "What? When? Where?" she demanded, her voice rising in pitch.

"Just a few hours ago," Alia replied, urgency lacing her words. "They dragged him into a black van near the old docks. I—I don't know how they got to him. It was too quick."

Eli's mind raced. The docks, once a bustling hub of trade, had become a graveyard of forgotten ships, their rusted frames left to decay.

"I'll head there now. I can't let them hurt him," she said, determination hardening her resolve.

"Eli, wait! We need a plan. This organization is dangerous. They've taken down more than just our lab. They have resources—people who won't hesitate to kill."

"Then I'll have to be smarter. I won't let them take him without a fight," she snapped, cutting the connection before Alia could argue further.

As Rai slowly regained consciousness, he found himself enveloped in suffocating darkness, the air thick with an unsettling silence. Distant echoes of laughter and muffled voices seeped into his awareness, igniting a flicker of dread within him. His mind raced as he tried to piece together what had happened, but his body felt heavy, weighed down by fatigue and confusion.

Suddenly, a figure stepped into the faint light of a nearby lamp, revealing a woman with sharp features and piercing eyes that glimmered with malicious intent. Zara, one of the leaders of the organization, leaned against the wall with an air of casual confidence, a sly smile playing on her lips.

"Ah, he's awake," she purred, her voice dripping with mockery. "Welcome back to the land of the living, Rai."

He struggled to gather his thoughts, the remnants of his memories jumbled and disoriented. "What do you want from me?" he croaked, his throat dry and his body aching.

Zara tilted her head, her expression shifting from amusement to something darker. "What do I want? Oh, it's quite simple, really. I want to help you see the truth."

"The truth?" Rai repeated, struggling to sit up. "What truth?"

"Let's not pretend here, Rai," she said, stepping closer, her voice silky and persuasive. "You know Eli only sees you as a tool—a means to an end. She doesn't love you. She's using you to achieve her own goals. You're just a broken soldier to her, a way to gain sympathy and attention."

Rai's heart clenched at her words. He remembered Eli's laughter, her warmth, the way she had fought to save him. But now, doubt crept into his mind like a shadow, whispering insidiously. *Could she really see him that way?*

"Eli has always been there for me. She's the one who—"

"Who what? Who saved you because she felt guilty? Because she thought it was her duty?" Zara interrupted, her voice dripping with scorn. "You're not her first priority, Rai. You're just a pawn in her game."

"She sent you away, didn't she?" Zara pressed on, her voice low and conspiratorial. "Your father's death may not have been her fault, but she and her family sure benefited from it. Your suffering has only served to elevate her status. You're no longer a soldier; you're nothing more than a liability to her."

"Shut the fuck up," Rai stammered, though the seed of doubt had already taken root in his heart.

"Do you think you can trust her? Look around you. You're here, in chains, broken, while she gallivants around, playing the hero," Zara continued, her tone dripping with disdain. "You were discarded, forgotten, just like the rest of us who dared to stand in the way of the powerful."

Rai's breath quickened as he grappled with his conflicting emotions. Eli had been his light in the darkness, the one person who had seen him for who he truly was, but Zara's words ignited a smoldering anger within him.

 Was Eli really using him?

"You have a choice, Rai," Zara said, her voice softening as she leaned closer, her eyes gleaming with cunning. "Join us. Together, we can dismantle the systems that oppress us. You can be more than just Eli's plaything; you can be a force to be reckoned with."

Zara's words wrapped around him, seductive and intoxicating, and he felt himself teetering on the edge of temptation. The prospect of power, of reclaiming his identity in a world that had stripped him of it, was tantalizing. But there was a voice deep inside him, a flicker of loyalty that fought against her influence.

"Why would you care about me?" he finally asked, suspicion edging into his voice. "You don't even know me."

Zara smiled, her expression devoid of warmth. "I know enough. I know that your pain can be a powerful weapon. We can harness that pain to change the world. Eli won't save you, Rai. But we can."

As she spoke, Rai felt the battle within himself intensify. Memories of Eli's kindness warred with Zara's dark promises, and for the first time, he questioned everything. Was Eli truly fighting for him, or was he merely a means to an end?

"Take your time to think," Zara cooed, stepping back and crossing her arms. "But remember, every moment you spend doubting her is a moment you could be taking back your power. The choice is yours."

Yet, Zara's insinuations echoed hauntingly in his ears.

"Join us," Zara urged, her voice a seductive melody that wrapped around him like a serpent. "Leave behind the chains that bind you. You deserve to be powerful, not a victim of circumstance."

Rai closed his eyes, grappling with the confusion swirling in his mind.
