Chapter 25 - 25-A DESPERATE MOVE

The air aboard the Spirit of Fire was charged with tension. Captain Cutter's orders had just come through: reconnaissance on the Covenant's latest discovery on the planet's surface—a Forerunner relic emitting energy signatures the crew had never seen. The Covenant had fortified the area around it, pouring in resources, and it was clear they wanted the relic intact.

Jamie Vega and his squad had been assigned to infiltrate the site to gather intelligence, but everyone knew what that really meant—go down there, see what's so valuable to the Covenant, and, if necessary, make sure they couldn't use it. It was an intense assignment, one he hadn't expected Cutter to give him. But given Jamie's track record and his unique way of thinking, Cutter had decided Jamie was the man for the job.

Standing near the open hatch of their Pelican drop ship, Jamie felt the weight of his gear and his rifle, the comforting familiarity anchoring him against the uncertainty of the mission. He and his squad were en route to the surface, descending fast and low to avoid Covenant anti-air batteries.

"Listen up!" Jamie called out to his squad over the roar of the engines. "The Covenant's got their claws in some kind of Forerunner tech down there. We're going to get in, assess, and figure out just how much of a threat this thing is."

"Intel's a bit thin, don't you think?" remarked Lance Corporal D'Angelo, the team's tech specialist, as she tightened her grip on her gear. "We don't even know what we're looking at."

"Exactly why we need eyes on it. Our mission is to gather what intel we can," Jamie replied. "And if the situation calls for it… we'll make sure they don't keep whatever they're after."

D'Angelo nodded, her face hardening with determination. They all knew the stakes. The Covenant's obsession with Forerunner tech often led to devastating consequences for humanity, and none of them wanted to let that happen here.

As the Pelican approached their drop zone, Cortana's voice crackled in Jamie's earpiece. She was serving as his AI support on this mission, her intelligence giving him and his squad an edge against the unknown technology they were dealing with.

"Jamie," she began, her tone laced with the precision and confidence he'd come to rely on. "From the scans I've done from orbit, this facility may contain some form of power distribution system. The Covenant's presence there suggests they're trying to activate or unlock something—but it's not entirely clear what."

"Understood, Cortana. Any idea what it could be?" Jamie replied, as the Pelican began its final descent.

"Nothing definitive yet," she responded, "but if we can access the main console inside, I might be able to pull detailed schematics of the structure. From there, I can tell you exactly what the Covenant's looking for."

Jamie took a deep breath as he steeled himself. "Then let's get moving."

The Spirit of Fire squad hit the ground just outside the Forerunner site, surrounded by dense alien vegetation and steep rock formations. The place had an eerie, unnatural stillness, and even though they hadn't encountered Covenant yet, Jamie knew they were near.

Cortana's voice came through his earpiece again. "I'm detecting multiple heat signatures just up ahead, near the structure's entrance. Elites, Grunts, and… energy readings that suggest a heavier Covenant presence than expected."

Jamie clenched his jaw, gesturing to his squad to spread out. They advanced slowly, eyes peeled for movement. "Any way around them?"

"There's an alternate entry point on the structure's north side," Cortana said, projecting a map onto Jamie's HUD. "It's a maintenance shaft, likely used by the Forerunners for smaller-scale operations. It's narrow, but it'll bypass most of the Covenant forces."

"Perfect." Jamie signaled his squad, pointing toward the alternate entry. "Let's move. Keep it tight and quiet."

They moved in disciplined silence, slipping through the undergrowth as they looped around to the north side. The maintenance shaft was partially concealed by a collapsed wall, barely noticeable against the massive stonework of the Forerunner architecture. Jamie led his squad into the shaft, which sloped downward into dimly lit corridors lined with strange, pulsing lights.

After several tense minutes of navigating the maze-like corridors, they finally reached a large chamber filled with rows of inactive consoles. The silence was thick, as though the ancient structure was holding its breath, waiting for something to awaken it.

"Cortana, are we clear?" Jamie whispered, scanning the empty room.

"For now," she replied. "You're in what looks like a control room. I'm interfacing with the system now. Hold tight while I access the data."

The team took up defensive positions as Cortana's data transfer initiated. Her presence in the alien network manifested as a series of lights and symbols flickering across the consoles. Jamie felt a pang of worry—if the Covenant had this much interest in this place, then whatever she was accessing had to be something major.

"I've got something," Cortana said, her voice suddenly sharper. "Jamie, this isn't just a data hub—it's a command node. The Covenant seems to believe this installation is capable of controlling other Forerunner constructs across the sector. And there's more… this system appears to be capable of targeting entire planetary networks with some sort of energy dispersal."

Jamie's stomach dropped. "You're saying this place is a weapon?"

"Potentially," Cortana answered. "Or at least, it could be used as one. I'm seeing options to direct energy flows, potentially as a focused attack or to power larger installations. The Covenant may want to use it as a launch point for an offensive."

Jamie glanced at his squad, their faces grim as they absorbed the information. If the Covenant got their hands on this facility, they could use it to control or weaponize other Forerunner sites.

"Can you shut it down?" Jamie asked.

"I'm working on it," Cortana replied. "But it's heavily encrypted. It might take a few minutes."

Jamie nodded, taking a deep breath. "We'll buy you the time."

Within moments, the Covenant began pouring into the room. Plasma fire filled the air, and Jamie's team returned fire, focusing on covering the doors to keep them from reaching Cortana's console. Elites and Grunts rushed forward, their weapons glowing in the dim light as they advanced on the squad's defensive positions.

D'Angelo, firing from cover, called out over the gunfire. "Jamie, we're running low on ammo!"

Jamie cursed under his breath. They couldn't hold this position much longer. "Cortana, status?"

"Almost done," she replied, her voice tight with focus. "Just… a few… more… got it! I've disabled the power grid and set the system to overload."

The lights in the chamber began to flicker erratically as the Forerunner facility started its shutdown sequence, rumbling ominously as power surged through the walls. The Covenant troops seemed to realize something was wrong, and they hesitated, looking around in confusion.

"Jamie, we need to get out of here now!" Cortana urged.

"Copy that," Jamie replied. "Squad, fall back! Move, move!"

They sprinted back the way they'd come, dodging the few remaining Covenant forces as the entire structure began to shudder violently. The ceiling cracked, and dust rained down on them as they pushed through the collapsing corridors.

As they neared the exit, an Elite Zealot, wounded but still dangerous, charged Jamie, roaring in fury. Jamie barely managed to sidestep the blade as he fired a close-range burst, the Elite's shields flaring and then collapsing as the creature fell.

They burst out into the open air, running for the rendezvous point as the Forerunner installation crumbled behind them. The rumble of the collapsing structure grew louder as they reached the Pelican, which had come in low to extract them.

"Go, go, go!" Jamie shouted as the squad climbed aboard.

The Pelican took off, and as they rose into the air, Jamie looked back to see the Forerunner structure collapsing in on itself, sending up a cloud of dust and debris.

As they settled into their seats, Jamie exhaled, adrenaline still coursing through his veins. He turned his attention to Cortana, who had managed to pull critical data from the installation.

"What did you learn?" he asked.

She replied, her voice steady. "The Covenant are searching for Forerunner sites like this one throughout the galaxy, each capable of affecting other installations. They're not just after weapons—they're after control points."

Jamie nodded, a sense of resolve hardening within him. They had dealt a blow to the Covenant here, but the larger fight was just beginning. And he knew that soon, the UNSC would need to mobilize everything they had if they were going to stand a chance.

"Thanks, Cortana," he said, feeling the weight of their partnership.

"Of course," she replied, her tone carrying a hint of warmth. "We'll stop them. One site at a time."
