Chapter 2 - It starts

I can't keep running... I can't keep going, my legs feel like jelly my arms are tired from holding the rifle. My eyes are heavy from the stress, my heart is about to burst from my chest. How.... how did it get this bad, where... no what are these things. God please.... help.. us.

One hour earlier -

"Look alive men, we move in five. Luke ETA on the supplies from command."

Ten minutes Sergeant, it'll drop at our next location upon arrival."

I can't help but feel anxious, we've been here for at least thirty minutes yet we've seen nothing. No people, no animals, not even a bird or the wind has blown through. I can't help but feel uneasy about it all, my danger meter has been on high yet nothing has happened. We haven't even seen a trace of the so called creatures we were called here to eliminate.

As we started to head out I took one more look at the pendent on my phone, inside it held the picture of my parents on one side and my little sister on the other. Trying not to let it distract me I closed it and headed to my position in the front of the formation.

Side by side with James we lead the group, surveying the area as we moved, we kept to the middle of the street keeping an eye on the surroundings buildings, if something or someone jumped out we will be ready.

"Clear!"

"Clear!"

We checked buildings that seemed damaged for clues on what happened, but other than the abnormal scratches, holes in the walls, and damaged furniture everything seemed fine. No bodies, no blood, nothing, everything seemed like it was fine mere minutes before we arrived. What could've happened in that short amount of time.

Arriving at the next location we could see the care package already landing, the smoke of the beacon already dying out as the parachute hit the ground. We didn't let our guard down though, we may be at our next safe zone but things are far from safe.

"Anything on the radars?"

James asked this while scratching his neck, it's a tick he has when he gets slightly stressed. Moving toward the the package he kept his rifle at the ready.

"No sir, nothing. I've been keeping my eye on it every so often, yet nothing but us has shown up."

"Alright, we load up, rest for three minutes then keep moving, don't wanna be in one spot for too long. (God knows what could be out there.)

After grabbing the equipment, we rested for a bit eating some of our rashons, trying to conserve as much energy as we could. But of course nothing last forever, I was the first to notice it, and when I did I froze instantly.

On the roof of one of the apartment buildings a figure stood, watching us... scanning us... looking for something. I could feel it's gaze as it looked at me, it knew that I was watching. It's body shifted slightly as it started to back away molding into the darkness. I can't make out what it was but I could've sworn it... smiled at me.

"Sir, we've got movement.!"
