Chapter 27 - The Night Attack

The sun had dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the forest as the caravan came to a stop for the night. The merchants were busy setting up a small camp, lighting fires and preparing food, while the adventurers remained on alert. The road to Westport had been uneventful after the bandit attack earlier in the day, but the tension in the air was palpable.

Ethan sat by the fire, his sword resting across his knees, eyes scanning the surrounding trees. Lila sat beside him, her staff glowing faintly in the dim light. Across the camp, Gavin and Mira were talking quietly, while Darin and Leora checked on the merchants.

The system's earlier warning about unusual energy still echoed in Ethan's mind. The discovery of the ancient monolith deep in the forest had confirmed his suspicion that something far more dangerous than bandits lurked nearby. The World-Core energy detected by the system was a troubling sign, and Ethan couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched.

"We should take turns on watch," Ethan said quietly to Lila, his voice barely above a whisper. "I don't trust this place."

Lila nodded, her gaze never leaving the treeline. "Agreed. I can feel it too. Something's out there."

Ethan stood, moving toward Gavin and Mira. "Let's set up a rotation for the night. We need to make sure the merchants are safe."

Gavin nodded, his usual carefree demeanor replaced with a more serious expression. "I'll take the first watch with Darin. You and Lila can rest for a while."

Mira smirked. "Don't worry, we've got this."

Ethan gave them a brief nod, but his instincts told him that rest wouldn't come easily tonight. As he returned to his spot by the fire, he couldn't shake the growing unease in his chest. The forest was too quiet, too still. It was as if the night itself was holding its breath, waiting for something to happen.

Hours passed, and the camp settled into a tense silence. The flickering fire cast dancing shadows on the surrounding trees, and the soft sounds of the merchants sleeping were the only break in the quiet.

Ethan lay on his back, staring up at the stars, his mind still turning over the strange energy they had encountered earlier. Residual World-Core energy. The system had detected it near the monolith, but the source was still unclear. Whatever it was, it was powerful—and dangerous.

Suddenly, a faint rustling sound reached Ethan's ears. He sat up quickly, his hand instinctively reaching for his sword. Across the camp, Gavin and Darin were already on their feet, their weapons drawn.

The rustling grew louder, the sound of leaves crunching underfoot. It was coming from the treeline, and it was getting closer.

"Everyone up!" Gavin shouted, his voice breaking the silence. "We've got company!"

Ethan was on his feet in an instant, his sword drawn as he moved toward the edge of the camp. Lila was beside him, her staff glowing with energy, ready to cast a spell at a moment's notice.

The rustling stopped, and for a moment, the forest was still. Ethan's heart raced as he scanned the shadows, searching for the source of the noise. But the darkness was impenetrable, and whatever was out there was hiding just beyond their sight.

"Do you see anything?" Lila whispered, her voice tense.

Ethan shook his head. "No. But I can feel it."

Just as the words left his mouth, the attack came.

From the shadows, a dozen figures burst forward—dark, twisted shapes that moved with unnatural speed. They were humanoid in form, but their bodies were covered in jagged, bone-like armor, and their eyes glowed with a sickly green light. Ethan had never seen anything like them before.

"They're not bandits!" Mira shouted from across the camp, her daggers already in hand as she lunged at one of the creatures. "What the hell are these things?"

Ethan barely had time to react before one of the creatures was upon him. Its claws slashed through the air, and Ethan brought his sword up just in time to block the blow. The force of the impact sent him stumbling back, his arms vibrating from the strength of the creature's attack.

"Lila, now!" Ethan shouted.

Lila raised her staff, and a wave of fire erupted from its tip, engulfing two of the creatures in flames. They screeched in pain, their bodies writhing as they tried to escape the blaze, but Lila held her ground, her magic burning bright.

Gavin and Darin were fighting off the creatures near the carts, their weapons clashing with the creatures' bone-like armor. Leora stood behind them, her hands glowing as she cast healing spells on anyone who was injured.

Ethan quickly regained his footing, his sword flashing as he slashed at the creature in front of him. The blade bit into its armored hide, but the creature barely seemed to notice. It lunged at him again, its glowing eyes filled with hatred.

Ethan dodged to the side, narrowly avoiding the creature's claws. He swung his sword in a wide arc, aiming for the creature's exposed neck. This time, the blade struck true, and the creature collapsed to the ground, its body twitching before going still.

"We can't hold them off forever!" Gavin shouted, his voice strained as he parried a blow from one of the creatures.

"There's too many of them!" Darin added, his face slick with sweat as he swung his sword in wide, desperate arcs.

Ethan's mind raced. These creatures were far stronger than the bandits they had fought earlier, and their numbers were overwhelming. The system had warned him about unusual energy, and now it was clear—these creatures were tied to whatever force was lurking in the forest.

The system chimed in Ethan's mind, and a new notification appeared:

"New Mission: Survive the Night."

Objective: Protect the caravan from the unknown entities until dawn."

Reward: 200 Growth Points."

Ethan's heart pounded as he read the message. Survive until dawn? That was hours away. They would need to hold the creatures off for the entire night if they wanted to make it through this.

"Lila, we need to focus on defense!" Ethan called, his voice urgent. "We can't take them all down. We just need to survive!"

Lila nodded, her face pale but determined. She raised her staff again, and a glowing barrier of light surrounded the camp, creating a temporary shield between them and the creatures.

"It won't last long," she warned, her voice strained from the effort of maintaining the spell.

"It'll have to do," Ethan replied, his eyes scanning the edge of the barrier as the creatures clawed at it, their glowing eyes filled with rage.

The night dragged on, every second feeling like an eternity as the creatures relentlessly attacked the barrier. The adventurers fought bravely, but exhaustion was beginning to take its toll. Gavin's sword swings were slower, Darin's heavy blows less precise, and even Lila's magic was beginning to flicker.

But they held on, their determination burning bright even as the creatures pressed harder.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity, the first rays of dawn began to break over the horizon. As the sunlight touched the clearing, the creatures let out a collective screech, their bodies dissolving into ash as the light washed over them.

The camp fell silent, the threat finally over.

Ethan collapsed to his knees, breathing heavily as he stared at the pile of ash where the creatures had stood. Lila sank down beside him, her face pale with exhaustion.

"We did it," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

Ethan nodded, his body trembling from the intensity of the fight. "Yeah… but what were those things?"

Gavin approached, wiping sweat from his brow. "I've never seen anything like that before. They weren't bandits. They weren't even human."

Ethan's mind raced as he tried to make sense of what had happened. The system had mentioned World-Core energy, and now these creatures—twisted by some dark force—had appeared out of nowhere. Whatever was happening in this forest, it was far more dangerous than any of them had realized.

The system chimed again, and a final notification appeared:

"Mission Complete: Survive the Night."

Reward: 200 Growth Points."

Ethan stared at the notification, his thoughts swirling. The night had been won, but the real battle was just beginning.
