Chapter 3 - A Thief’s Pact

The sun was beginning to rise as Aldara, Dorian, and the rest of their team made their way back to the Iron Griffin. The streets of Lunaris were quiet, the air thick with the stillness that only came in the early hours of the morning. They moved quickly, keeping to the shadows, each of them acutely aware of how close they had come to disaster the night before.

Aldara's mind was racing, her thoughts circling back to the Eye of Vaelor and the surge of dark magic that had nearly overwhelmed them. She had known the First Magic was dangerous, but the power contained within that artifact was unlike anything she had ever encountered. If the Guild was truly using that kind of magic to keep control over Lunaris, then their grip on the city was stronger—and darker—than she had imagined.

They slipped through a narrow alleyway and into the back entrance of the Iron Griffin, stepping into the warm, dimly lit interior. Dorian locked the door behind them, his gaze sweeping over the others to make sure everyone had made it back safely. The group dispersed throughout the small room, each person finding a place to sit or lean, their faces drawn and weary.

Aldara took a deep breath, trying to steady her racing heart. "Thank you all for coming with me tonight. I know the risks we took weren't easy, but we've learned something valuable. The Eye of Vaelor is powerful beyond measure, and it's clear that the Guild is using it to maintain their control. Destroying it won't be easy, but we can't let that magic remain in their hands."

Nera, the fire mage, shook her head, her face pale. "I didn't know magic like that even existed. The way it felt—it was like it was alive, like it was reaching out to me. I've felt powerful magic before, but nothing like that."

Kael, the former Guild apprentice, leaned forward, his gaze intense. "That's because the First Magic isn't just any magic. It's ancient, a force that predates the Guild itself. I remember reading about it in some of the Guild's forbidden texts, but I never thought they'd actually use it. The Guild's founders sealed it away for a reason, but now… now it seems they're willing to risk everything to keep their power."

Aldara nodded, feeling the weight of Kael's words. "If they're willing to unleash something so dangerous, then we're running out of time. We need a new plan, a way to weaken their hold without directly confronting the Eye. I won't put any of you through that again unless we know it'll work."

Mira, the thief who had picked the lock to the vault, crossed her arms, her expression skeptical. "So what's the plan, then? We're up against the Guild's strongest magic, and we don't exactly have an army on our side. How do we fight something like that?"

Dorian leaned forward, a small smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "We may not have an army, but we have something better—information. And right now, information is the only weapon we need. If we can find out where the Guild's weak spots are, hit them in places they're not expecting, we can start to chip away at their control."

Aldara nodded, her mind already racing with possibilities. "If we can disrupt the sources of their power, it might weaken the Eye's influence over the city. The Guild has numerous artifacts and magical wards spread throughout Lunaris—each one of those serves as a node, a conduit for the First Magic. If we destroy or disrupt enough of them, we might be able to weaken the Eye without having to face it directly."

Kael's eyes lit up with understanding. "Of course! The Guild has anchor points throughout the city. They've used them for years to channel the First Magic's power, amplifying its effects and spreading it across Lunaris. If we take out the anchor points, we could destabilize the entire system."

Venn, the illusionist, raised an eyebrow. "And how, exactly, do we find these anchor points? The Guild isn't going to just leave them out in the open."

Aldara turned to Dorian, a determined glint in her eye. "That's where you come in. If anyone in this city can track down the Guild's secrets, it's you."

Dorian grinned, tapping his fingers against the table. "You know me well. I might know a few people who could help. The Guild has plenty of enemies, and not all of them hide in the shadows. There are traders, craftsmen, and even some Guild mages who'd love to see the council knocked down a few pegs. With the right leverage, we can gather the information we need."

Mira let out a low whistle, shaking her head. "So that's the plan, then? We're going to dismantle the Guild's entire system piece by piece?"

Aldara's gaze was steely, her determination unwavering. "Yes. One step at a time. They've had control of Lunaris for too long, and they've been using magic that should never have seen the light of day. If we want to protect this city, we have to be willing to do whatever it takes."

The group exchanged glances, a mixture of fear and resolve reflected in their eyes. They were all aware of the risks, but they also understood the stakes. The Guild's control over the First Magic was a threat to everyone in Lunaris, and if they didn't act, no one else would.

Dorian stood, a mischievous glint in his eye. "Alright, then. I'll put the word out, see what information I can dig up. Meet back here tomorrow night, and I'll let you know what I find."

As the group dispersed, Aldara felt a renewed sense of purpose. The Guild's power was vast, but they were not invincible. With Dorian's help, they would find the anchor points, break the Guild's control over the First Magic, and bring the truth to the people of Lunaris.

But as she watched her friends leave, she couldn't shake the feeling that their fight was only just beginning—and that the real danger was yet to come.

The Next Night

The following evening, Aldara arrived at the Iron Griffin to find Dorian waiting for her, a sly grin on his face. He gestured for her to sit, his eyes glinting with excitement.

"I've got something," he said, his voice low and conspiratorial. "I tracked down a contact in the eastern district—a blacksmith named Taren who used to supply enchanted weapons to the Guild. He's not too fond of them these days, and he let slip a few interesting details."

Aldara leaned in, eager to hear more. "Go on."

"Turns out, the Guild has a hidden chamber beneath the city," Dorian continued. "It's not just any chamber—it's one of the primary anchor points for the First Magic. The blacksmith used to make trips there to deliver materials, so he knows the way. He says it's heavily guarded, but if we can get inside, we might be able to disrupt whatever magic they're using."

Aldara's heart raced with excitement. This was exactly what they needed—a chance to strike directly at the heart of the Guild's control over the First Magic. "Do you think Taren would be willing to help us?"

Dorian shrugged. "He's not the most loyal man, but he's got a grudge against the Guild, and he hates what they've done to Lunaris. If we play our cards right, I think we can convince him to join us."

Aldara nodded, her mind already working through the details of their plan. "Then we should move quickly. If the Guild suspects that we're targeting their anchor points, they'll tighten security. We'll need to be in and out before they even realize what's happening."

Dorian grinned, clearly relishing the challenge. "Leave it to me. I'll talk to Taren, make sure he's on board. Meet back here at midnight, and we'll head out."

Midnight, Outside the Eastern District

The eastern district of Lunaris was a labyrinth of narrow alleyways and darkened streets, a place where the shadows ran deep and the Guild's influence was less direct. Aldara and her team waited in a secluded corner, their breaths visible in the cool night air as they prepared for the mission ahead.

Dorian returned with Taren in tow, a burly man with a grim expression and arms like iron. He wore a battered cloak over his blacksmith's clothes, and his eyes held a hardness that spoke of years spent under the Guild's rule.

"This is Taren," Dorian said, introducing him to the group. "He knows the way to the chamber."

Taren grunted, crossing his arms. "I'm not doing this for you," he said, his voice rough and unyielding. "I'm doing it because the Guild's robbed me of everything I once held dear. They think they can take whatever they want, do whatever they want. But they're wrong."

Aldara nodded, understanding the pain in his voice. "We're all here for the same reason. We want to see the Guild brought down and Lunaris freed from their control."

Taren held her gaze for a moment before giving a single nod. "Then let's get moving. The chamber is beneath an abandoned warehouse near the canal. It's heavily warded, but I know a way in."

They moved through the shadows, following Taren's lead as he guided them through the twisting streets of the eastern district. The air was thick with tension, each of them acutely aware of the danger they faced. If they were caught, there would be no escape—but if they succeeded, it would be a blow to the Guild they wouldn't soon forget.

They reached the warehouse, a crumbling building with boarded-up windows and a faint smell of mildew. Taren led them around the back, to a narrow stairwell that descended into darkness.

"Down here," he whispered, his voice barely audible. "The chamber's hidden beneath the foundation. The Guild uses it for rituals, to anchor the First Magic to Lunaris. If we can disrupt the spell, it'll weaken their hold."

Aldara felt a surge of determination as she followed Taren down the stairs, her footsteps silent on the stone. The passage was narrow and dark, the air thick with the scent of old magic. She could feel the power of the First Magic pulsing beneath her, a dark, heavy presence that seemed to press down on her with every step.

At the bottom of the stairs, they reached a large iron door engraved with runes. Taren reached into his pocket, pulling out a small vial of powdered silver, and sprinkled it over the runes. The symbols shimmered, fading into the metal as the door unlocked with a soft click.

They slipped inside, entering a vast chamber filled with towering columns and intricate carvings. In the center of the room was a large, circular platform, surrounded by a series of runic stones that pulsed with a faint blue light. Aldara could feel the power radiating from the platform—the First Magic, anchored to Lunaris through the Guild's dark rituals.

Dorian gave her a questioning glance, his face pale in the dim light. "What now?"

Aldara took a deep breath, steeling herself. "We disrupt the anchor. The Guild has bound the First Magic to these stones, using them to channel its power throughout the city. If we destroy the stones, we break the link."

Kael stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the runes. "I can help with that. These stones are enchanted, but if we target their weak points, we can overload the spell."

Together, they spread out around the platform, each of them focusing on one of the stones. Aldara could feel the magic pushing back against her, a dark, powerful force that resisted her every attempt to disrupt it. But she held firm, channeling her own power into the stone, her voice steady as she chanted the incantation Kael had taught her.

One by one, the stones began to crack, their light flickering as the spell faltered. The air grew thick with the scent of burning magic, the energy in the room reaching a fever pitch as they worked to break the anchor.

Finally, with a deafening crack, the last stone shattered, and a wave of dark energy exploded from the platform, filling the room with a cold, suffocating presence. Aldara stumbled, catching herself as the energy dissipated, leaving the chamber silent.

They had done it.

Taren let out a low chuckle, his face twisted in satisfaction. "The Guild's going to feel that one. They won't know what hit them."

Aldara managed a small smile, relief flooding through her. This was only the beginning, but it was a victory nonetheless. The Guild's control over Lunaris was weakening, and with each anchor they destroyed, they grew one step closer to freeing the city.

But as they made their way back through the darkened streets, Aldara couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched—that somewhere, in the shadows, something was waiting, watching their every move.

The fight for Lunaris was far from over, and the darkness that lay ahead was only just beginning.
