Chapter 16: The Bond of Strangers
The forest was alive with the whispers of wind and rustling leaves, the sounds of distant animals creating a symphony of the wild. The day was still young, with the sunlight filtering through the thick canopy of trees, casting a soft, golden glow on the underbrush. Ren and Kairos walked side by side, the silence between them filled with unspoken tension. For Kairos, this was not just a hunt—it was a step forward in his journey to grow stronger, to rise above the weak and uncertain person he had always been.
Ren, calm and focused, led the way, his sharp eyes scanning the horizon for any sign of danger. He moved with the ease of someone who had spent years in the wilderness, his footsteps barely making a sound as he navigated through the dense forest. In contrast, Kairos struggled to keep his footing, his heart pounding in his chest from both the excitement and the pressure of what lay ahead.
"You ready?" Ren asked, his voice low but firm.
Kairos nodded, gripping the hilt of his sword tighter. "Yeah, I'm ready."
Ren gave him a brief, approving glance before turning his attention back to the path ahead. "Stay close. The creatures out here won't hesitate to attack if they sense weakness."
Kairos felt a surge of determination at Ren's words. He had spent his whole life feeling weak, feeling like he didn't belong in this world. But now, with this new power surging through him, the system guiding his every move, he had a chance to prove himself. Today's hunt was his first real test.
It didn't take long for them to encounter their first challenge. Ren suddenly raised his hand, signaling Kairos to stop. The faint sound of growling reached their ears, followed by the rustling of leaves. Ahead, Kairos saw movement—a pack of large, wolf-like creatures prowling near a stream. Their dark, matted fur and glowing yellow eyes made them look even more dangerous than he had imagined.
"Shadowfang Wolves," Ren muttered under his breath. "They're pack hunters, and they'll flank us if we're not careful. Stay focused. I'll take the front. You handle the ones that try to circle around."
Kairos felt a chill run down his spine as he watched the wolves. They were clearly predators, their lean bodies built for speed and power. But he couldn't let fear take over. This was his chance to grow stronger.
Ren moved first, his speed almost blinding as he dashed toward the wolves. His sword flashed in the sunlight as he engaged two of them at once, his movements swift and precise. Meanwhile, the other wolves began to spread out, their eyes locked on Kairos.
Kairos swallowed hard and drew his sword, readying himself for the attack. A wolf leaped at him from the side, its fangs bared and claws extended. But Kairos was ready. With a swift slash of his blade, he caught the creature mid-air, sending it crashing to the ground.

The system's notification appeared in his mind, but there was no time to dwell on it. Another wolf was already charging at him. This time, Kairos moved with more confidence, sidestepping the attack and delivering a killing blow to the creature's side.

Each kill sent a surge of energy through him, a tangible sensation of power coursing through his veins. The system interface blinked to life, showing his progress.

Kairos could feel the difference immediately. His body felt lighter, his movements more fluid. With each kill, he was becoming faster, stronger. This was the power of the system—the power that was uniquely his.
Ren, meanwhile, had already finished off the remaining wolves with little effort. He wiped the blood from his blade, glancing at Kairos with an approving nod. "You're improving."
Kairos, still catching his breath, looked around at the fallen wolves. His muscles ached, but there was a sense of accomplishment swelling within him. He was growing stronger, just as he had hoped.
As they walked back to camp, the adrenaline from the hunt began to wear off, leaving Kairos with a sense of quiet contemplation. The forest was peaceful now, the only sounds being the soft rustling of leaves and the occasional chirping of birds. Kairos couldn't help but think about Ren. The man was strong, confident, and seemed to carry a deep wisdom about the world. But there was also something else—a weight that Ren carried, something in his eyes that spoke of pain and loss.
Kairos had never been good at making friends, but for the first time, he felt like he wanted to know more about someone. There was a connection between them—something unspoken, but real.
"Ren," Kairos began, his voice hesitant. "What happened in your past? You seem like… you've been through a lot."
Ren didn't respond immediately. They continued walking in silence for a few moments, the tension between them thick in the air. Just as Kairos was about to drop the subject, Ren spoke.
"I was born into a noble family," Ren said quietly, his tone distant, as if he were recalling a memory from another lifetime. "The House of Kaldor. We were powerful, wealthy, respected by many. But none of that mattered when it came to strength. In a world like ours, power is everything, and those without it are discarded."
Kairos listened intently, sensing that Ren was revealing a part of himself that he rarely showed anyone.
"I was the youngest son, and I was weak," Ren continued, his voice hardening slightly. "No matter how hard I trained, no matter what I did, I couldn't live up to their expectations. My brothers were all prodigies—warriors, scholars, men of great renown. And then there was me, the black sheep of the family, the one who brought nothing but shame to our name."
Ren's words struck a chord with Kairos. He had always felt like an outcast, but hearing Ren speak about his own struggles made him realize that even someone as strong as Ren had faced rejection.
"In the end, they disowned me," Ren said, his gaze fixed on the ground. "I was cast out, stripped of my title and my name. They told me I wasn't worth the Kaldor name—that I was a disgrace to the family. So, I left. I wandered for years, trying to find a place in this world, trying to prove to myself that I wasn't worthless."
Kairos felt a lump form in his throat. He knew what it was like to be cast aside, to feel like you didn't belong. For so long, he had been searching for his own path, just like Ren.
"That's when I found Ascension," Ren continued, his voice softening. "It was my only way forward. Through sheer will and determination, I rose, pushing myself beyond my limits. I became strong—strong enough to survive on my own. But no matter how much power I gained, it never filled the emptiness inside."
Ren stopped walking and looked at Kairos, his eyes filled with a mixture of sorrow and resolve. "Power won't give you everything, Kairos. It can help you survive, but it won't fix the things that truly matter."
Kairos didn't know what to say. He had always believed that becoming stronger would solve all his problems, that it would give him the life he had always dreamed of. But now, hearing Ren's story, he wasn't so sure.
"We're not so different," Kairos muttered, almost to himself. "I thought I was the only one who felt like this. Lost."
Ren gave him a small, sad smile. "You're not alone anymore, Kairos."
Kairos looked at Ren, feeling something stir within him. It was the first time in his life that he had felt a connection like this—a bond of understanding between two people who had both been cast aside. For the first time, he felt like he had found a true friend.
Back at the camp, the fire crackled softly as they sat down to rest. Kairos opened his system interface, still feeling the rush of power from the hunt. The wolves had been tough, but the experience had been worth it. His stats had improved, and he had two more Ascendant Points to spend.
