Chereads / The Grim Reaper's Human Assistant / Chapter 8 - Boundaries

Chapter 8 - Boundaries

Izzy had thought that her first day of training would involve something simple, like paperwork or a few basic combat drills. But as soon as she stepped into the training grounds, she realized that "simple" was not in Lucian's vocabulary.

The space was vast and filled with various equipment, some of which looked more suited to a torture chamber than a training ground. Weapons of all kinds lined the walls, and strange, glowing runes covered the floor in intricate patterns. A cold chill ran down her spine as she spotted a few reapers sparring in the distance. Their scythes clashed with a deadly elegance, and she couldn't help but wonder if she'd ever move with such fluidity.

"Don't worry," Lucian's voice cut through her thoughts. "You're not going to be sparring with a scythe on your first day." He appeared beside her, arms crossed, his usual smirk playing on his lips. "Unless, of course, you feel particularly brave."

"Brave? Or suicidal?" Izzy retorted, managing a nervous laugh. "So, what exactly am I doing?"

Lucian gestured toward a large, ring-shaped symbol engraved on the ground. "Step into the circle," he instructed. "Your first lesson is learning to control the energy of this realm."

Izzy glanced at the glowing symbol warily. "You mean… like magic?"

"If that helps you wrap your head around it," he said with a shrug. "Reapers don't exactly use 'magic' as mortals understand it. We manipulate the energies of the dead—the essence of souls, if you will. You, as a human, shouldn't be able to do much with it, but you might surprise me."

Izzy took a deep breath and stepped into the circle. The runes flared brighter, and she felt a strange tingling sensation coursing through her body. It wasn't painful, but it was unlike anything she'd ever felt before.

"Now, focus," Lucian instructed. "Try to gather the energy at the center of the circle and pull it toward yourself."

She closed her eyes and reached out with her senses. At first, there was nothing, just the silence of the space around her. Then, gradually, she began to feel a faint pulse—a rhythmic beat that seemed to resonate from the ground itself. She reached out to it, trying to pull it toward herself like Lucian had said.

A sudden surge of power shot through her, making her stumble. Her heart raced, and her eyes snapped open as she saw tendrils of dark energy swirling around her like smoke. But the energy quickly faded, leaving her breathless and disoriented.

"That was… better than I expected," Lucian admitted, sounding almost impressed. "You managed to tap into it, even if it was just for a moment."

Izzy shook her head, trying to clear the lingering dizziness. "It felt… strange. Like it was pulling me in, rather than the other way around."

"That's because you're still new to this," Lucian said. "The energy here has a mind of its own, in a way. It responds to intent, but it can also consume you if you're not careful."

"Great," she muttered. "So it's like trying to tame a wild animal."

"Exactly," Lucian replied with a faint smile. "And like any wild animal, it requires respect and caution."

He moved to the center of the training ground and waved his hand. The runes shifted and changed, forming a different pattern. "Let's see if you can handle a little more," he said. "Try to summon that energy again, but this time, I want you to direct it toward one of the training dummies over there."

She followed his gaze to a row of humanoid figures made of shadow and smoke. They looked almost alive, their eyes glowing with an eerie light. Izzy took another breath and focused, reaching out to the energy once more.

This time, she managed to summon it more quickly, the dark tendrils coiling around her arm. She pointed her hand toward one of the dummies and pushed the energy outward. It shot forward in a burst, hitting the dummy square in the chest. The impact wasn't particularly strong, but the dummy wavered, its form flickering as if it was struggling to stay solid.

"Not bad for a first attempt," Lucian commented. "But don't get cocky. This is just the beginning."

Izzy nodded, sweat beading on her forehead. "What else do you have for me?" she asked, trying to mask her exhaustion with bravado.

Lucian's smirk widened. "Oh, you'll find out soon enough."

Meanwhile, Elsewhere in Hell

Silas and Kade stood at the edge of a darkened chamber, watching a cauldron-like basin filled with a shimmering liquid. Faces swirled within the surface, muttering whispers that were barely audible. The two reapers exchanged a glance.

"She's getting stronger," Kade said, his voice laced with both curiosity and concern. "Faster than I anticipated."

Silas nodded, his expression thoughtful. "It seems Lucian's taking a personal interest in her training."

"You think he actually cares about a human?" Kade scoffed. "Lucian may be a lot of things, but sentimental is not one of them."

"True," Silas admitted. "But there's more to this than meets the eye. The Council's decision to give her a probationary period was a surprise. I'm beginning to think they're testing him as much as they're testing her."

Kade raised an eyebrow. "You think they doubt Lucian's loyalty?"

Silas shrugged. "With reapers, loyalty is always a fluid thing. Let's just say I wouldn't be shocked if Lucian's defiance put him on thin ice. We'll see how long he can keep that human safe."

The two of them turned away from the basin, their forms melting into shadow as they left the chamber.

Back at the Training Grounds

Izzy's training continued for several hours. By the end of it, she was exhausted and sore, but she had managed to make some progress. She had summoned the energy several times and even managed to shatter one of the dummies with a particularly strong blast.

Lucian walked over, handing her a small flask of water. "You did well for your first real training session," he said, a rare note of praise in his voice.

Izzy took the flask gratefully, drinking deeply. "I feel like I got hit by a truck," she admitted with a tired smile.

"Get used to it," Lucian replied with a chuckle. "It'll only get harder from here."

"Great," she muttered sarcastically. "I'll look forward to collapsing every day."

Lucian glanced at the training grounds, his expression turning serious. "This is just the beginning, Izzy. If you're going to survive in Hell, you need to be ready for anything."

She nodded, feeling the weight of his words. "I won't back down," she said, meeting his gaze. "Whatever you throw at me, I'll deal with it."

For a moment, there was a flicker of something in Lucian's eyes—something almost like admiration. But before she could be sure, it was gone, replaced by his usual cool demeanor.

"Good," he said simply. "Because the next training session is going to be twice as tough."

As Izzy left the training grounds, she couldn't help but wonder if Lucian's intense training was really for her sake—or if there was something else driving him to push her so hard. The thought lingered in her mind as she returned to her quarters, a feeling of unease settling over her.

After a long day of training, Izzy stumbled back to her quarters, exhausted but determined. Her limbs felt heavy, and her muscles ached from the repeated use of Hell's energy. Lucian's training was as grueling as it was intense, but there was no time for complaints. If she was going to survive here, she had to adapt quickly.

As she pushed open the door to her room, she was greeted by a chilling gust of wind. The air was colder than usual, and a strange, unsettling feeling settled in her stomach. Something was off. The shadows in her room seemed to writhe and twist unnaturally, as if they were alive.

"Lucian?" she called out cautiously, half-expecting the reaper to appear out of thin air like he often did. But there was no response. She took a step inside and immediately sensed a presence—a figure standing near the far corner, half-hidden in the darkness.

Izzy's heart leaped to her throat as she reached for the dagger Lucian had given her during training. It wasn't much, but it was better than nothing. "Who's there?" she demanded, trying to keep her voice steady.

The figure stepped forward, and Izzy's grip on the dagger tightened. It was a woman, tall and elegantly dressed in a dark cloak that shimmered like smoke. Her eyes glowed a deep crimson, and her hair fell in waves of shadow. There was an air of authority about her that sent a shiver down Izzy's spine.

"So, you're the human girl everyone's been whispering about," the woman said, her voice smooth and cold. "The one Lucian seems so determined to keep alive."

Izzy frowned, keeping the dagger pointed at the woman. "And you are…?"

The woman's lips curled into a faint, amused smile. "My name is Elara. I'm one of Lucian's… colleagues. I heard about his new little project and decided to see for myself what all the fuss was about."

"Colleague?" Izzy echoed, taking a step back. "Are you a reaper too?"

Elara chuckled, the sound echoing unnaturally in the small room. "Oh, I'm much more than that. I am one of the higher-ranking reapers—those who oversee the balance between realms. And right now, that balance is being disrupted by your presence here."

Izzy's brow furrowed as she tried to make sense of the woman's words. "Disrupted? I didn't ask to end up in Hell, you know. This wasn't exactly on my to-do list."

"Perhaps not," Elara replied, her gaze sharp. "But your existence here has consequences. Humans are not meant to see Hell while they are still alive, and yet here you are, mingling among reapers, learning to manipulate energies you shouldn't even be able to touch."

Izzy tightened her grip on the dagger. "Lucian said I could earn my way out of here. That if I helped him, I could leave."

"Did he now?" Elara's smile faded slightly, her expression turning thoughtful. "Lucian always did have a rebellious streak. However, you should know that not all reapers are as... lenient as he is."

There was a hint of a threat in her tone, and Izzy could feel the tension growing. "Are you here to kill me?" she asked bluntly, trying not to let the fear creep into her voice.

Elara's eyes narrowed. "Kill you? No. If I wanted you dead, you wouldn't have seen me coming. I'm here to deliver a warning. Do not get too comfortable here, human. There are forces at play far greater than you understand, and if you continue to be a disruption, not even Lucian will be able to protect you."

With that, Elara's form dissolved into mist, disappearing before Izzy could utter another word. The temperature in the room slowly returned to normal, but the chill that had settled in her bones remained. She lowered the dagger and took a shaky breath, trying to steady her racing heart.

---

Later that night, Izzy lay awake, her mind racing with questions about the encounter with Elara. Who exactly was she? And what did she mean by "forces at play"? Lucian had never mentioned any higher-ranking reapers or hinted at the existence of a hierarchy among them. It seemed there was much more to Hell's politics than he had let on.

The door to her quarters creaked open, and Lucian entered, his eyes immediately narrowing as he saw the look on her face. "What happened?" he asked, his tone urgent.

Izzy hesitated, then decided there was no point in hiding it. "Someone came to see me. Her name was Elara. She said she was one of your colleagues and gave me a warning."

Lucian's expression darkened, and for a moment, a flash of something like anger flickered in his eyes. "Elara," he repeated, almost like a curse. "I should have known she'd try something like this."

"Is she dangerous?" Izzy asked, sitting up. "She seemed to know a lot about me… and you."

"Elara is dangerous, yes," Lucian replied, his voice cold. "But not in the way you're thinking. She won't harm you directly, at least not yet. However, she has a way of manipulating events to suit her agenda. If she's taken an interest in you, it means she sees you as a potential threat."

"A threat? Me?" Izzy couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity. "I'm just a human who's trying to find a way back to the living world. How could I be a threat to anyone here?"

Lucian's gaze softened slightly, a rare moment of sincerity breaking through his usual stoic facade. "You're more resilient than you think, Izzy. You've managed to tap into Hell's energy, something most humans could never do. Elara and others like her will see that as a sign of potential—potential that could be dangerous if left unchecked."

Izzy felt a lump form in her throat. "So, what do I do? Just stay out of her way?"

"For now, yes," Lucian said, his voice firm. "But don't let her intimidate you. She thrives on fear and uncertainty. If you show any sign of weakness, she'll use it against you."

"Great," Izzy muttered. "As if being in Hell wasn't hard enough already."

Lucian's expression softened again, and he took a step closer. "You're not alone in this," he said quietly. "Remember that. I'm here to help you, no matter what games the others might try to play."

For a moment, Izzy felt a strange warmth in his words—a kind of reassurance she hadn't expected from someone like Lucian. It was almost… comforting.

But before she could respond, Lucian turned and headed toward the door. "Get some rest. We'll continue training tomorrow. And keep your guard up. Elara isn't the only one who might try to test you."

As he left, Izzy lay back down, staring at the ceiling. It seemed like every time she thought she was beginning to understand this place, something new and dangerous would appear. But if Lucian believed she could handle it, then maybe, just maybe, she wasn't as powerless as she felt.

In the silence of her room, Izzy made a silent promise to herself: no matter what came her way, she would not let fear control her. She had already defied death once; she could do it again.
