Haruka stood outside the Vasquez household, taking a deep breath before ringing the doorbell. A few days had passed since the epic battle against Black Adam, and the Vasquez family had invited him over for lunch as a gesture of gratitude.
The door swung open, revealing Rosa Vasquez's warm smile. "Haruka, come in! We're so glad you could make it." She ushered him inside, her eyes crinkling with kindness.
Haruka stepped through the threshold, carrying a few boxes of doughnuts. "Thank you for having me, Mrs. Vasquez. I, uh, brought these as a small gift." He held out the boxes, a hint of nervousness in his voice.
"Oh, how thoughtful!" Rosa exclaimed, taking the boxes from him. "Victor, come say hello to Haruka." She turned and called out to her husband, who emerged from the living room.
Victor approached Haruka, his expression serious but not unkind. "Haruka, we're grateful for what you did to help our kids during the chaos. Please, come in and make yourself at home."
Rosa and Victor welcomed Haruka into their home. They were unaware that their foster children were secretly superheroes or that Haruka himself was the Kamen Rider. The Vasquezes knew only that Haruka had helped their family when Black Adam was attacking the city, and they were grateful for his actions.
Haruka nodded, a small smile forming on his lips. "Thank you, Mr. Vasquez. I'm just glad I could be of assistance."
As Haruka stepped further into the house, the Vasquez children came bounding into the room, their faces lighting up at the sight of him.
"Haruka!" Darla exclaimed, rushing over and wrapping her arms around his waist. "You came!"
Haruka chuckled, gently patting the young girl's head. "Hello, Darla. It's good to see you all again."
Freddy grinned, elbowing Haruka playfully. "Dude, you're the real MVP. Thanks for having our backs out there."
Mary offered Haruka a warm smile. "We're glad you could join us for lunch, Haruka. Please, make yourself comfortable."
The other children, Eugene, Pedro, and even the usually reserved Billy, greeted Haruka with enthusiasm, their voices overlapping as they expressed their gratitude.
Haruka observed as Billy, once withdrawn and wary, now engaged with the Vasquez family. The boy laughed alongside his foster siblings, his eyes alight with a sense of belonging he had likely never experienced before. For the first time, Billy seemed at ease, the weight of his responsibilities momentarily lifted.
Everyone gathered around the dinner table. Billy clapped his hands together. "Alright, everyone, all hands on deck." The Vasquez family placed their hands in the middle of the table, stacking them up. Rosa and Victor held back their tears, seeing Billy finally accept being part of the family.
Victor turned to Haruka. "Come on, son, join us."
Haruka hesitated for a moment, but then stepped forward and carefully placed his hand on top of the Vasquez family's. As their hands connected, Haruka felt a rush of warmth spread through him. There was an unspoken energy in the room, a sense of unity and acceptance.
Billy says a small prayer.
"Thank you for this day. Thank you for this food. Thank you for this family." He looks at Haruka.
"And thank you for the new friends we met." Haruka smiles, feeling a warmth spread through him as he's accepted into this close-knit family. The Vasquez children echo Billy's sentiments, their voices blending together in gratitude. Rosa and Victor beam, their hearts swelling with pride to see their foster children coming together as one.
Haruka took a seat at the table, looking around at the Vasquez family as they settled in. Rosa started passing around plates of food, and the children eagerly dug in, chattering away.
"This is delicious, Mrs. Vasquez," Haruka said, taking a bite. "You're an amazing cook."
Rosa beamed. "Why thank you, Haruka. I'm so glad you're enjoying it."
Freddy elbowed Haruka playfully. "Yeah, dude, this spread is the bomb. Mom really outdid herself this time."
Darla nodded enthusiastically, her mouth full. "Uh-huh! It's the best!"
The table erupted in lively conversation as the Vasquez family shared stories and jokes. Haruka listened intently, occasionally chiming in, a small smile playing on his lips as he felt welcomed into their warm, boisterous dynamic. Even the usually reserved Billy seemed to be opening up, laughing along with his siblings.
Rosa turned to Haruka, her warm smile never fading.
"So, Haruka, where do you live? We'd love to have you over again some time."
Haruka replies, "I live in National City. I'm actually traveling through different cities this summer vacation."
Rosa nods, a warm smile on her face. "National City, huh? That's quite a distance. What brings you out this way?"
Haruka pauses, considering his words carefully. "Well, I'm on a bit of a personal journey, I suppose you could say. Visiting new places, trying to figure some things out." He glances at Billy, who is engaged in a lively discussion with Freddy.
Rosa listened intently as Haruka spoke about his travels. "So you'll be leaving Fawcett City soon then?" she asked, a hint of disappointment in her voice.
Haruka nodded solemnly. "Yes, I'm afraid so. I have to continue my journey to the other cities on my list." He glanced around the table, seeing the crestfallen expressions on the Vasquez children's faces.
Billy spoke up, his brow furrowed. "But you just got here. Can't you stay a little longer?" The other kids chimed in, voicing their agreement.
"Yeah, we were just starting to get to know you," Freddy said, a pout forming on his lips.
Mary placed a hand on Haruka's arm. "Please, Haruka, we'd love for you to stay a while longer. It's been so nice having you around."
Darla's eyes glistened with unshed tears. "Don't go, Haruka! We want you to be part of our family too."
Haruka felt a pang of guilt as he witnessed the children's disappointment. He knew he had to continue his mission, but their heartfelt pleas tugged at his heart.
"I'm sorry, everyone," Haruka said, his voice soft. "I really wish I could stay, but I have to keep moving. There are still more cities I need to visit and more work I have to do."
Disappointment clouded the Vasquez children's faces as Haruka explained his need to continue his journey. Billy, Freddy, Mary, Darla, Eugene, and Pedro couldn't hide their crestfallen expressions.
Haruka, sensing their sadness, offered a compromise. "But we can exchange contact information," he said, "so we can keep in touch. And if you ever need my help, don't hesitate to reach out." The Vasquez kids perked up at this, understanding the implication of Haruka's offer ā that his assistance would be for their superhero activities, which Victor and Rosa remained unaware of.
Haruka continued to eat, savoring the warm, delicious meal. The Vasquez children chattered excitedly around him, sharing stories and jokes. Freddy even tried to coax Haruka into staying longer, promising they could play video games together.
As the meal drew to a close, Haruka knew it was time for him to depart. He cleared his throat, drawing the family's attention. "I'm afraid I need to be going soon. My train leaves in a couple of hours."
The children's faces fell, and Darla looked up at him with pleading eyes. "Do you really have to go, Haruka? Can't you stay just a little bit longer?"
Haruka offered the young girl a sympathetic smile. "I wish I could, Darla, but I have some important things I need to take care of in the other cities." He glanced around at the rest of the Vasquez family, seeing similar expressions of disappointment.
Victor stood up from the table, placing a hand on Haruka's shoulder. "We understand, son. You have your own path to follow." He gave Haruka's shoulder a gentle squeeze. "But you're always welcome here, anytime."
Rosa nodded in agreement, her eyes shining with warmth. "That's right, Haruka. Our door is always open to you."
Haruka felt a lump forming in his throat as he looked at the Vasquez family. These people, who had welcomed him into their home and their hearts, were now making him feel like he truly belonged.
"Thank you, all of you," Haruka said, his voice thick with emotion. "I can't tell you how much this means to me."
The Vasquez children surrounded Haruka, enveloping him in a group hug. Freddy ruffled his hair playfully, while Mary and Darla squeezed him tightly. Even the usually reserved Billy offered Haruka a sincere smile.
As Haruka reluctantly pulled away, he made a silent promise to himself to stay in touch with this remarkable family. He knew that no matter where his journey took him, he would always have a place in their hearts.
With a final wave, Haruka said his goodbyes and stepped out the door, his heart heavy with a mix of gratitude and longing. The Vasquez family stood in the doorway, waving and calling out their farewells until Haruka disappeared from sight.
