Haruka's brow furrowed as he stared down at the history textbook, the words blurring together on the page. No matter how hard he tried, the subject just wouldn't stick in his mind. His gaze flickered up to Kara, who was patiently explaining a key historical event, her fingers tracing the timeline in the book.
"And so, the treaty was signed, ending the conflict between the two nations," Kara said, her voice warm and encouraging. "Do you understand where this fits into the larger context?"
Haruka nodded slowly, though he felt a pang of frustration. "Yeah, I think so," he replied, his tone uncertain. "It's just a lot to remember, you know?"
Kara offered him a sympathetic smile. "I know it can be tough, but you're doing great. History is all about connecting the dots, and I'm here to help you make those connections."
Haruka couldn't help but feel a twinge of admiration for Kara's unwavering patience. Despite his struggles, she remained unfazed, determined to guide him through the material. He took a deep breath, refocusing his attention on the textbook.
"Okay, let's try this again," he said, his voice steadier. "Can you walk me through the key events leading up to the treaty?"
Kara's eyes lit up, and she launched into a detailed explanation, her hands gesturing animatedly as she spoke. Haruka found himself getting lost in her words, his mind momentarily free from the weight of his Kamen Rider responsibilities.
As Kara continued her lesson, Haruka couldn't help but steal glances at her, captivated by the way her eyes sparkled with enthusiasm and the way her lips curved into a gentle smile. He felt a strange fluttering in his chest, a sensation he wasn't entirely familiar with.
Sensing his gaze, Kara paused and met his eyes. "Hey, are you with me?" she asked, her brow furrowing slightly.
Haruka blinked, realizing he had been staring. "Uh, yeah, sorry," he said, his cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "I was just... thinking about something."
Kara studied him for a moment, her expression softening. "Well, don't get too distracted," she teased, a playful glint in her eyes. "We've still got a lot of material to cover before the exam."
Haruka nodded, his lips curving into a small smile. "Right, let's keep going."
As Kara resumed her lesson, Haruka found himself once again captivated by her, his heart racing with a strange mixture of emotions. The weight of his Kamen Rider responsibilities momentarily faded into the background, replaced by a sense of comfort and warmth in Kara's presence.
Haruka set down his textbook, stretching his arms above his head with a sigh. "Maybe we should take a break," he suggested, his gaze meeting Kara's. "My brain feels like it's about to short-circuit."
Kara giggled, closing her own book. "Definitely a good idea. We've been at it for hours." She leaned back in her chair, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. "So, do you have any fun plans for summer break?"
Haruka paused, considering her question. "Actually, yeah, I do," he replied, a hint of excitement in his voice. "I'm planning on traveling to a few different cities."
"Really?" Kara's eyes widened with interest. "Where are you going?"
Haruka furrows his brow. "I don't know yet. I'm still deciding where to go."
Kara's face lights up. "Well, you should definitely come to Metropolis! That's where I'm going to spend my summer break. We could hang out and explore the city together."
Haruka declines but does not want to shoot down the entire idea to make Kara sad. "Uh, I'll think about it..." He offers a half-hearted smile, not wanting to disappoint her.
Metropolis is the city protected by Superman, and his villains are no joke. Haruka believes he can't take down Superman villains yet, and he does not want to meet the Man of Steel yet. The thought of facing off against the likes of Lex Luthor or Doomsday makes him uneasy. As much as he's intrigued by the idea of exploring Metropolis with Kara, the risk seems too great.
Kara's face falls slightly, but she quickly recovers, flashing him an understanding smile. "No worries, I know you've got a lot going on. Maybe some other time, yeah?"
Haruka nods, relieved that she's not pushing the issue. "Yeah, definitely." He pauses, then adds, "I'm still figuring out my plans, but I'll let you know if anything changes."
Kara's eyes light up with hope, and Haruka can't help but feel a twinge of guilt for not being more enthusiastic about the idea. He knows he needs to focus on his missions as the Kamen Rider, but a part of him wishes he could just be a normal teenager enjoying summer break with a friend.
Haruka and Kara continued to study, pouring over the history textbook for what felt like hours. Haruka found himself getting distracted, his gaze drifting to Kara's face as she explained a particularly complex concept. The way her brow furrowed in concentration, the gentle curve of her lips as she spoke – it all captivated him in a way he couldn't quite understand.
Sensing his attention waning, Kara would periodically call his name, gently guiding him back to the task at hand. Haruka would blink, refocusing his efforts, but inevitably, his eyes would stray back to her.
As the sun began to set, casting a warm glow over the cozy café, Kara closed her textbook with a satisfied sigh. "I think that's enough for today. My brain is starting to feel a little fried."
Haruka nodded in agreement, stretching his arms overhead. "Yeah, me too. Thanks for your help, Kara. I really appreciate it."
Kara beamed at him, her eyes crinkling at the corners. "Of course! That's what friends are for, right?"
The word "friends" sent a small pang through Haruka's chest, though he couldn't quite place why. He offered Kara a lopsided smile in response.
As they gathered their belongings and made their way out of the café, Haruka couldn't help but feel a twinge of reluctance. He'd grown so comfortable in Kara's presence, the weight of his Kamen Rider responsibilities momentarily lifted.
"I, uh, I had a good time today," Haruka said, glancing sideways at Kara.
"Me too," Kara replied, her tone warm. "We should do this again sometime."
Haruka nodded, the corners of his lips quirking upward. "Definitely."
They parted ways, Haruka making his way back to the Kojima mansion. As he walked, he couldn't help but feel a sense of anticipation for the next time he and Kara would study together. The thought of her bright smile and unwavering kindness filled him with a sense of comfort he hadn't felt in a long time.
Haruka stepped through the grand entryway of the Kojima mansion, his backpack slung over his shoulder. The warmth of the foyer enveloped him, a stark contrast to the bustling city streets outside.
"Haruka, you're home!" Hana, his mother, greeted him with a warm smile, her eyes sparkling with maternal affection.
"Welcome back, son," Matsu, his father, said, looking up from the newspaper he was reading. "How was your day?"
Haruka is taking off his shoes. "It was good. I was studying with Kara at the café."
Hana's face lit up at the mention of Kara's name. "Kara? That's wonderful! You should invite her over for dinner sometime. I'd love to meet her."
Haruka's cheeks flushed slightly, and he nodded. "Uh, yeah, maybe sometime."
Matsu chuckled, folding his newspaper and setting it aside. "Kara, huh? Is she a special friend of yours, Haruka?"
"What? No, no, it's not like that," Haruka stammered, his face growing warmer. "We're just study partners, that's all."
Hana's eyes twinkled with amusement, and she reached out to gently pat Haruka's arm. "Well, whenever you're ready, we'd be happy to have her over. I'm sure she's a lovely girl."
Haruka nodded, a small smile tugging at the corners of his lips. "Someday, I'll introduce you to her."
Hana beamed, her expression filled with a mother's pride. "We'll look forward to it."
Matsu stood and placed a hand on Haruka's shoulder, his gaze warm and understanding. "In the meantime, how about we have a family dinner tonight? I'm sure your mother has something delicious planned."
Haruka felt a wave of gratitude wash over him, and he nodded. "That sounds great."
As Hana bustled off to the kitchen, Haruka followed Matsu into the dining room, his heart swelling with a sense of belonging he hadn't experienced in a long time.
Haruka fidgeted nervously as he approached his father, Matsu, who was sitting in the living room reading the evening paper. Gathering his courage, Haruka cleared his throat.
"Dad, I was wondering..." Haruka began, drawing Matsu's attention away from the newspaper. "Could I go on a road trip during the summer break?"
Matsu folded the paper and set it aside, his brow furrowing slightly. "A road trip? That's a rather spontaneous request. May I ask why you want to do that?"
Haruka shifted his weight from one foot to the other. "Well, I just... I feel like I need to get out and see more of the world, you know? Broaden my horizons a bit."
Matsu studied his son for a moment, stroking his chin thoughtfully. "I see. And you'd be going alone?"
Haruka nodded, glancing towards the kitchen where he could hear Hana, his mother, moving about. "Yeah, I think it would be good for me to have that experience on my own."
Matsu hummed contemplatively, then a small smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "Well, if that's what you feel you need, I'm supportive of it."
Haruka's eyes widened in surprise. "Really? You are?"
Nodding, Matsu reached out and gave Haruka's shoulder a gentle squeeze. "Absolutely. A little independence and adventure can be invaluable, especially at your age. Just promise me you'll be safe and responsible."
"I will, I promise!" Haruka assured him, relief washing over him.
Just then, Hana emerged from the kitchen, drying her hands on a towel. "What's going on?" she asked, her gaze shifting between Haruka and Matsu.
Matsu turned to his wife, his expression warm. "Haruka has asked if he can go on a road trip during the summer break."
Hana's brow furrowed with concern. "A road trip? By himself?"
Matsu nodded. "Yes, he feels it would be good for him to have that experience."
Hana's gaze shifted to Haruka, her eyes filled with a mother's worry. "But, Haruka, are you sure you'll be alright on your own?"
Haruka offered his mother a reassuring smile. "I'll be fine, Mom. Dad thinks it's a good idea, and I promise I'll be careful."
Hana hesitated for a moment, then sighed, her shoulders relaxing. "Well, if your father approves, then I suppose it's alright. Just... please be safe, okay?"
Haruka nodded emphatically. "I will, I promise."
Hana stepped forward and pulled Haruka into a warm embrace. "Alright, then. I trust you, Haruka. Just make sure to call us regularly, and don't forget to eat properly."
Haruka chuckled, returning the hug. "I won't, Mom. Thanks for understanding."
As Hana released him, Matsu placed a hand on Haruka's back, guiding him towards the dining room. "Come on, let's discuss this over dinner. I'd love to hear more about your plans."
