Chapter 10 - Aftermath

Now, in the remains of the ruins, The Guardian followed its first attack with a swift barrage of earth spikes, Kaelin countered with a gust of wind, deflecting the worst of it, but the relentless assault bashed at his arms wavering his magic, Every spell he cast drained his energy, and he knew they couldn't sustain this much longer. The Guardian's power felt limitless, an unyielding force bound to the Orb's essence, fueled by the same energy that once brought balance to their world.

Eira's sharp eyes were fixed on the Guardian, studying its every move. She seemed to be searching for something, an understanding flickering in her gaze. Then, in a flash of insight, she cried, "Kaelin! Its strength comes from its connection to the Orb. That bond… it's resonant. If we disrupt it, we might be able to weaken it." Of course, Kaelin didn't understand how an entities bond could make it stronger but it later became clear, it's power was fueled by the will to protect the Orb's secrets.

Kaelin nodded, grasping at the hope Eira offered. He focused, tuning into the energy around them, feeling for the resonance she spoke of, a little frequency, humming like a heartbeat just beneath the Guardian's attacks. It was in sync with the Orb itself, the Magic of the three sages, magic that made the Guardian nearly invulnerable, it felt as though Kaelin had connected with a god.

Taking a deep breath, Kaelin began crafting a spell, concentrating on the specific energy signature. He manipulated the air, bending it to form a counter frequency, something just out of sync with the Guardian's resonance. The air vibrated with his efforts, and slowly, he felt a shift. The Guardian staggered, its movements growing less fluid, as though it had been unplugged from a battery.

"Now!" Eira urged, sensing the slight hesitation in the Guardian's stance.

Kaelin summoned a torrent of energy, directing it toward the Guardian. His magic collided with the creature's weakened defenses, and this time, it cracked on impact. The Guardian's aura flickered, its strength dropping, leaving an opening for Kaelin's attack. Seizing the opportunity, Kaelin conjured a spear of condensed fire and hurled it forward, piercing through the Guardian's armor-like exterior. The entity stumbled, its fiery eyes dimming as it lost its connection to the Orb's might.

"Keep going!" Eira called, her voice demanding urgency. Together, they pushed forward, launching coordinated strikes. Kaelin's attacks targeted the weak points revealed by the disrupted resonance, while Eira used her own magic to hold the Guardian at bay, trapping it in a net of binding energy. The creature roared in defiance, but it was no longer an unstoppable force; now, it was just an ancient defender whose time had come.

Finally, with a final surge of energy, Kaelin released a powerful strike that sent the Guardian crumbling to the ground. Its form flickered, the once brilliant fire of its eyes fading to a dim torch. Kaelin felt a strange sense of triumph and respect for the Guardian—a being that had existed solely to protect a lost era's legacy.

In the silence that followed, Kaelin and Eira exchanged a glance, their faces, exhausted and amazed, They had bested the Guardian, yet the weight of what lay ahead seemed more daunting than ever.

"That was… something else," Kaelin murmured, catching his breath as he looked at the fallen Guardian.

Eira nodded solemnly. "It reminds us that the Orb's power comes with a cost. We have to be careful. We're not just fighting for ourselves—we're facing the echoes of an ancient world's hope and despair."

As they prepared to move forward, Kaelin glanced back one last time at the Guardian. The victory was theirs, but he couldn't shake the feeling that their true challenge had only just begun.
