The next day, Kendrick tried to keep his head down. He didn't go to the local court, didn't take his usual route to the gym, and stayed away from the usual hangouts. He knew Trenton and his crew would be looking for him, and right now, he couldn't afford any drama.
But later that afternoon, as he was walking home from the store, he spotted two familiar figures across the street. Mo-G and Slim, both from Trenton's crew, were leaning against a wall, watching him.
Kendrick's heart raced, but he kept his face calm, pretending not to notice them. He picked up his pace, hoping they'd just leave him alone.
"Yo, K-Dawg!" Mo-G called, crossing the street with Slim close behind. "You ignoring us now?"
Kendrick stopped, his mind racing. He knew they wouldn't take no for an answer, so he turned to face them, trying to keep his voice steady.

Mo-G stepped closer, a smirk on his face. "You think you're too good for us now? Heard you're planning to run off to college, leave the hood behind."

Slim laughed, shaking his head. "You think it's that easy, huh? The streets don't just let you go, K-Dawg."
Kendrick held his ground, meeting their eyes. "I know it's not easy. But I'm done with this. I have a chance, and I'm taking it."
Mo-G's smirk faded, and he gave Kendrick a hard look. "You better be careful, K-Dawg. We don't like traitors."
