The days that followed felt like a blur of sweat, exhaustion, and tension. Kendrick threw himself into training like never before, pushing his body to the limit as he prepared for the showcase. Each morning, Coach Ray led the team through grueling drills, conditioning, and scrimmages. And each evening, Kendrick worked solo on the court, perfecting his shot, his footwork, and his defense.
But the streets weighed heavily on his mind. Every time he saw Trenton or one of his crew hanging around the neighborhood, Kendrick's chest tightened. He knew they weren't done with him, and his decision to turn down the "job" had likely sealed a grudge. Trenton had once been his brother, but now, he felt like a shadow, haunting Kendrick's every move.
Today's training was harder than usual. Coach Ray's voice boomed across the gym, barking orders as the players sprinted up and down the court.
"Faster, Rivers!" Coach Ray shouted as Kendrick dragged himself down the baseline. "You think scouts care about how tired you are? You're fighting for your life out here!"
Kendrick pushed harder, his legs burning with each stride. He could feel the eyes of his teammates on him, but he didn't care. He had something to prove to them, to Coach Ray, and most importantly, to himself.
Finally, Coach blew the whistle, signaling the end of the drill. Kendrick doubled over, catching his breath, as sweat dripped from his face.
"Good work, Rivers," Coach Ray said, his voice softer now. "Keep this up, and you just might have a shot."
Kendrick straightened, meeting Coach's gaze. "I'm ready, Coach. I'll do whatever it takes."
Coach Ray nodded, his eyes studying Kendrick with a rare hint of approval. "We'll see. Keep working. You got one shot at this, kid. Don't waste it."
As Kendrick left the gym, he felt a renewed sense of determination. But as he stepped outside, he spotted Trenton leaning against a nearby wall, watching him with an unreadable expression.
Kendrick took a deep breath, ignoring the pit in his stomach. He couldn't let Trenton distract him not now.
Without a word, Kendrick walked past him, leaving the streets behind, if only for a moment.
