Chereads / The Exiled Creator / Chapter 34 - Return

Chapter 34 - Return

The descent from the mountains was slow, the path rocky and treacherous. The victory over the shadow magic lingered in the air, but the group moved cautiously, knowing full well that the dangers they had faced weren't truly gone. The air was crisper as they descended, and the faint sounds of birds and rustling trees signaled their approach to more familiar terrain.

Lira took the lead, her eyes ever watchful for any sign of trouble. "We'll reach the outskirts of Myrlen by midday tomorrow if we keep up this pace," she said, her voice steady but alert. "But we can't get complacent. We're not safe yet."

Kellen adjusted the pack on his shoulders, casting a glance at Cedric. "You still feeling alright? You've been quiet since we left the cave."

Cedric walked beside him, his mind still buzzing from everything they'd gone through. "I'm fine," he said, though his tone lacked conviction. "Just… thinking."

"Thinking?" Maeve teased from behind them. "That doesn't sound good. You're not going to collapse on us again, are you?"

Cedric chuckled softly. "No. I'm just trying to make sense of everything. The shadow magic, the seal, Marus… it feels like we're only seeing part of the picture."

Marus, who had been trailing behind, raised an eyebrow at the mention of his name. "You're right, Cedric. The shadow magic we dealt with was just one part of a much larger force. The seal may be stable for now, but it's only a matter of time before the cracks start showing again."

"Always with the optimism," Kellen muttered.

Lira shot Kellen a look. "Focus. We're not out of the woods yet. Literally."

---

As they continued their descent, Cedric couldn't shake the feeling that they were being watched. The air around them felt heavy, as if something unseen was trailing their every step. He glanced at the others, trying to gauge if they felt it too, but no one had said anything.

Tamsin, walking beside Cedric, seemed more on edge than usual. "Do you feel that?" she whispered.

Cedric nodded. "Yeah. Something's not right."

Before Cedric could voice his concern to the others, Lira came to a sudden halt. "Hold up," she said, her hand resting on the hilt of her sword. "We've got company."

From the shadows of the forest, several figures emerged, their hoods drawn low over their faces, their movements fluid and calculated. Cedric's heart skipped a beat. They looked eerily similar to the group that had attacked them in Myrlen.

Kellen was the first to react, slipping a dagger from his belt and taking a step back. "More of the cult, I'm guessing? You'd think they'd get tired of following us."

Maeve sighed, pulling a vial from her pouch. "Here we go again. Can't they just let us enjoy a peaceful walk for once?"

One of the hooded figures stepped forward, his voice low and calm. "You're carrying something valuable. We've come for it."

Lira stepped in front of Cedric, her sword already half-drawn. "We don't have anything for you. Turn around and leave before this gets ugly."

The figure laughed softly, a cold, hollow sound. "We know what you've done. You think destroying the orb solved the problem, but you've only delayed the inevitable. The shadow magic will return, and when it does, we'll be there to claim its power."

Cedric felt a chill run down his spine. "Who are you?"

The man tilted his head slightly. "We are the Awakeners, and we have no need for the orb. But we do need you, Cedric."

Kellen smirked, though his eyes were sharp. "Well, that's flattering. Too bad you're not getting him."

---

The tension in the air thickened as the Awakeners spread out, forming a loose circle around the group. The faint hum of magic pulsed from their hands, though they hadn't made any overt moves to attack, yet.

"You don't understand," the leader of the Awakeners continued, his voice smooth. "Cedric, you have the power to reshape the world. You've seen it. The creation magic that flows through you is the key to unlocking forces beyond anything this world has seen in millennia. The shadow magic was just a taste of what's possible."

Cedric clenched his fists, the weight of the man's words pressing down on him. "I'm not interested in your plans for power. The magic I use is for creating, not destroying."

"Creation and destruction are two sides of the same coin," the man replied, his tone patient. "You have the potential to control both, to restore the balance that was lost when the ancient seals were broken. Join us, and we'll show you how."

Lira's grip on her sword tightened. "You've heard his answer. Leave. Now."

The man didn't seem fazed by the threat. "We don't seek to harm you, but understand this, we are not your enemies. We seek to awaken the world to its true potential, and we believe Cedric can help us do that. Think about it."

Cedric's heart pounded in his chest. The idea of controlling both creation and destruction felt wrong. But at the same time, there was a part of him that wondered, what if they were right? What if his magic had more potential than he realized?

Tamsin's voice broke through his thoughts. "Don't listen to them, Cedric. They're manipulating you."

Maeve stepped closer to Cedric, her expression serious for once. "She's right. These people aren't offering anything good."

Marus, who had remained silent up until now, spoke softly. "Power like that comes at a price, Cedric. Don't be fooled by their promises."

The man's eyes flickered with amusement. "We'll meet again, Cedric. When you're ready to see the truth."

With that, the Awakeners began to retreat into the shadows, disappearing as quickly as they had come.

---

Once the Awakeners were gone, the group stood in silence for a moment, the tension still thick in the air.

Kellen was the first to speak. "Well, that was creepy. What is it with these cults and their obsession with you, Cedric?"

Lira sheathed her sword, her eyes scanning the forest. "We need to be more careful. If the Awakeners are following us, they're going to try again."

Cedric nodded, but his mind was still racing with the man's words. "They want me to use creation magic for destruction. They think I can control both…"

Tamsin placed a hand on his shoulder. "But you don't have to. Your magic is yours to control, Cedric. Don't let them twist it."

Marus, standing a little apart from the group, nodded in agreement. "You have a choice, Cedric. Creation and destruction may be linked, but the path you walk is your own."

Cedric took a deep breath, steadying himself. "I won't let them sway me. We've fought too hard to protect the world from this kind of magic. But I have to admit… they know more about my magic than I do."

Maeve frowned. "So what's the plan? Are we going to ignore these Awakeners, or are we going to figure out what they're really after?"

Lira looked at Cedric, waiting for his decision. "It's up to you."

Cedric exhaled slowly, his resolve hardening. "We'll return to Myrlen and regroup. But we can't ignore the Awakeners. We need to find out more about them, and what they're planning."
