Helen POV
I spent days hiding in the old storage house's little corner, where nobody ever cared to go, and avoiding the pack. My chest had been hurting ever since Alpha Scott turned me down. The dull aching persisted and would not go away. I was unable to comprehend it. How was he my mate if he didn't share my bonding experience?
I sat by myself, putting my legs up against my chest and gazing at the floor. My mind kept going back to that night; I could still see the hatred in Scott's eyes and the harshness in his voice. It felt as though I didn't exist. As if I had no value.
"Why am I here at all?" To myself, I muttered. "Not really, I've never belonged to this pack."
My early years and the loneliness I had as an orphan omega came flooding back. I was left to be raised by the pack out of sympathy after my parents passed away when I was a newborn. However, I never felt like I belonged there. I was always the unwelcome, weak one.
The bullies were still fresh in my mind, especially Serena, who would constantly sneer at me and tell me how unworthy I was. Now Scott had followed suit. Perhaps they were correct. Perhaps I wasn't suitable to be a partner for anyone.
Tears burned in my eyes, but I fought the need to blink. I was no longer able to cry. It would be ineffective. However, I couldn't get rid of the sense that there ought to be more. The Moon Goddess would have paired me with someone like Scott for a purpose.
"Why did she decide on me?" I uttered a barely heard murmur. "What makes me so unique?"
Scott was sitting in his office far away in the packhouse, gazing out the window. The room was softly lit by the moon, but his thoughts were anything but tranquil. He was consumed by thoughts of what had transpired during the Moon Ceremony.
He whispered to himself, attempting to persuade himself that what he had done was the right one.
His Beta, Marcus, leaned against the doorframe and observed him intently. You did, he concurred. An omega like Helen? Scott, she's frail. That kind of person cannot be your Luna. It would give you a vulnerable appearance.
Scott's jaw tightened. He didn't want to acknowledge it, but when he turned Helen down, something didn't feel right. He'd believed for a split second that he felt something, a tug, there. However, it vanished just as swiftly as it appeared.
With a tone of hesitation in his voice, Scott said, "I don't know." Something about her appeals to me. It defies explanation.
Marcus gave a headshake. "Ignore her. As the Alpha, you are. You require a powerful partner at your side. Not a helpless, weak-willed orphan omega.
Scott nodded, but the discomfort persisted in the background. Why was Helen so difficult for him to forget? Her picture persisted, especially the look of anguish on her face as she fled, but he should have been able to move on.
Marcus patted Scott on the shoulder and said, "Focus on the pack." You'll meet someone more appropriate to be your Luna. Someone more powerful
Serena made her way to Scott's office later that night. Even though he didn't see her the way she wanted him to, they had always been close. She had been waiting for her opportunity, expecting him to see her as more than just a fighter.
"Alpha," with a voice as sweet as honey, she greeted him gently.
Scott hardly looked up from his desk's paperwork. "Serena," he answered. His voice seemed distant, preoccupied.
She approached with something in her eyes that seemed to be admiration or perhaps ambition. I wanted to see how you were doing. Following everything with Helen.
Scott sighed. "I'm alright,"
Her calming, gentle voice went on, "I know you made the right decision." "You would have just been weakened by an omega like her. Strong Luna is needed by the pack.
With a tiny narrowing of his green eyes, Scott glanced at her. "What would you like to say?"
With a mischievous smirk, Serena grinned. "I'm just saying... I'm right here if you're looking for someone strong, someone who knows what it means to lead."
Before Scott could react, Serena said, "The pack needs a powerful Luna, Scott," and he raised an eyebrow. Someone you can rely on and support is needed. For you, I am that person.
Scott thought about what she had said for a while, yet he had a moment of hesitation. His voice was icy as he answered, "We'll see."
Serena didn't press anymore, but her smile dimmed a little. The seed had been sown by her. All she had to do now was wait for it to enlarge.
I decided to go for a walk in the woods since I could no longer endure to stay in the packhouse. Even though the night air was chilly, I didn't mind. It assisted in numbing my chest ache. I had no idea where I was heading and just roamed. All I wanted to do was escape from everything.
In the moonlight, the trees towered over me, creating elongated shadows. Usually, the woodland was tranquil, but there was something uneasy about the air tonight. Unease pricked my skin, but I ignored it. It was most likely all in my head.
Wandering along, lost in contemplation, I was startled to hear a low growl coming from behind me.
With a beating heart, I froze. My blood raced cold as I turned around slowly. At the edge of the clearing stood three rogue wolves, their eyes gleaming with hatred. Compared to other wolves I had ever seen, these were larger and more ferocious-looking.
Fear gripped me, causing my breath to catch in my throat. I wasn't a combatant. I was helpless against them.
A renegade moved forward and bared its teeth. My head was screaming for me to run, but my legs felt like they were cemented to the ground as my body tightened and I took a step back.
I narrowly avoided getting hit by the rogue's sudden lunge at me. My palms scraped the coarse soil as I staggered to the ground. I could not afford to stay down, so even though I was in excruciating pain, I forced myself to stand up.
I heard another snarl from behind me and quickly turned to see the second rogue pounce. I held my arms up to protect myself, waiting for the blow, but it never arrived.
Suddenly, a big, black wolf sprang into the clearing and tackled the rogue in midair. They both fell to the ground with great power from the hit. I was shocked to see the enigmatic wolf use vicious, intense strength to drive the rogues away.
In a couple of seconds, the fight was done. The clearing became eerily quiet as the rogues withdrew, growling as they vanished into the trees.
Trembling, I stood there, gazing at the wolf that had come to my rescue. Its eyes shone brightly with intellect, and its coat was a deep midnight black. It turned to face me, and for an instant, I thought I recognized something in its eyes.
However, the wolf vanished into the darkness before I could speak, leaving me standing by myself with my heart thumping in my chest.
Who was that wolf? And why had they saved me? I stood there in the silence of the forest, my mind racing with questions. But one thing was clear I wasn't safe anymore. Something bigger was at play, and I had a feeling it was only the beginning.
