Chapter 4 - Awakening the Rebirth : The Echo of Power

### **Arc 1, Chapter 4: The Echo of Power**

---

The sky is overcast when Elara and I arrive at the training grounds the next morning, a thin layer of clouds casting a dull gray light over Lysara. The air is cooler than yesterday, with a faint chill that makes me pull my cloak tighter around me. My hand still aches from the flame I summoned yesterday, the skin raw where the fire burned too hot, but I can't let that slow me down.

Today, I need to do better. I need to prove that I can control this power inside me, or it'll consume me before I even understand what it is.

Elara stands beside me, her usual calm demeanor unchanged by the weather or the weight of what we're about to do. Her sword is strapped to her back as always, but today, there's something different in her eyes—a quiet intensity, a challenge. It's as if she knows today will be a turning point, whether I succeed or fail.

"We'll take it slower today," she says, glancing at my bandaged hand. "I don't want a repeat of yesterday."

I nod, clenching and unclenching my fist. My fingers feel stiff, but the pain is manageable. "I'm ready."

Elara watches me for a moment, as if gauging whether I truly mean it. Then she steps back and gestures toward the open space in front of us. "Let's start with what we learned yesterday. Summon a spark—nothing more. Focus on control."

I take a deep breath and close my eyes, trying to block out the world around me. I can feel the energy again, just beneath the surface, like a well of heat waiting to be tapped. Slowly, I reach for it, letting the warmth flow through me and into my hand.

At first, there's nothing. Then, after a moment, a small flicker of flame appears above my palm. It's weak, barely more than a wisp of fire, but it's there. And, more importantly, it's stable.

"Good," Elara says, her voice steady but encouraging. "Now, hold it."

I focus on the flame, keeping it small, keeping it controlled. The fire pulses gently in my hand, but I can feel the raw power behind it, like a beast waiting to break free. I grit my teeth and force myself to stay calm, to keep that power at bay.

For a few seconds, everything is fine. The flame stays steady, and for the first time, I feel like I'm actually in control. But then, without warning, the heat begins to intensify. The flame grows, expanding beyond what I intended. Panic sets in as the fire starts to spiral out of control, just like yesterday.

"Elara!" I call out, my voice tight with fear.

Before she can respond, the flame bursts, flaring wildly in all directions. I try to pull it back, but it's too late. The fire explodes from my hand, engulfing the space around me in a surge of heat. I stumble backward, my vision blurred by the sudden blaze.

"Arion!" Elara's voice cuts through the chaos.

In an instant, she's beside me, her hand raised. A wave of cool energy washes over me, and the flames vanish, snuffed out like a candle in the wind. The sudden silence is deafening.

I collapse to my knees, gasping for breath, my body trembling from the effort. My hand is burned again, but not as badly as before. Still, the pain is sharp, a reminder of how close I came to losing control—again.

Elara kneels beside me, her face calm but serious. "You're letting the power overwhelm you," she says quietly. "You can't just reach for it and hope for the best. You have to guide it."

"I tried," I say through gritted teeth. "But it's like the fire has a mind of its own. Once it starts, I can't stop it."

Elara nods, her eyes thoughtful. "That's because you're thinking of it the wrong way. Magic isn't just a tool you can use however you want. It's a part of you, an extension of your will. You need to stop fighting it."

I frown, wiping the sweat from my brow. "Stop fighting it? What does that even mean?"

Elara rises to her feet and offers me a hand. "It means you need to understand what the fire is before you can control it. Magic is tied to emotion, to your very essence. If you're afraid, if you're uncertain, the fire will reflect that. You need to be calm, focused."

I take her hand and pull myself to my feet, wincing as I flex my burned fingers. "So, what do I do?"

Elara looks out over the training grounds, her gaze distant. "There's a place just outside Lysara—a shrine, built long before the Veil Shattering. It's connected to the essence of Elysia, to the magic that flows through this world. If you go there, you might be able to find the clarity you need."

I stare at her, unsure. A shrine? It sounds more like a legend than a real solution. But then again, nothing about this world feels real to me. If Elara thinks this shrine can help, maybe it's worth a try.

"When do we go?" I ask.

Elara shakes her head. "Not we. You. This is something you need to do on your own."

"Alone?" The thought makes my stomach turn. I've barely survived my encounters with the Veilborn so far, and now she expects me to venture out beyond the city walls by myself?

"You'll be fine," she says, as if reading my thoughts. "The path is clear during the day, and the Veilborn rarely come near the shrine. Besides, you'll need to learn how to face danger on your own eventually. You won't always have someone to rely on."

Her words are a harsh truth, but I know she's right. In this world, I can't afford to be helpless. If I want to survive—if I want to help protect Lysara—I need to learn how to stand on my own.

I take a deep breath and nod. "I'll go."

Elara smiles faintly, but there's no warmth in it. "Good. You'll leave tomorrow at first light. Rest up today, and make sure you're ready."

With that, she turns and walks away, leaving me alone in the training grounds. I watch her go, feeling a strange mix of gratitude and dread. I'm grateful for her help, for her belief in me. But the thought of going to this shrine alone, of facing whatever dangers lie beyond the city walls, fills me with a cold, creeping fear.

Still, I know this is something I have to do. If I can't control my power, I'll be a danger to everyone around me. I've already seen what happens when the fire gets out of control, and I won't let it happen again.

As I leave the training grounds and make my way back to my room, I can't help but feel the weight of what's ahead. Tomorrow, I'll be venturing out into the unknown, into a world I barely understand. But for the first time since I woke up in that forest, I feel a spark of determination.

I don't know who I was before, or why I have this power, but one thing is clear: I'm not the same person anymore.
