Chereads / The Pawn of Satan / Chapter 2 - Catching up

Chapter 2 - Catching up

"Where did your specs go Alex?" Skyler asked with a chuckle. Before she could say anything the food came. Skyler took his fork and started digging into his medium rare steak. "Still no response?" he said as he took a bite of his food.

"That's the first thing you ask?" she asked as she picked up a sushi with chopsticks. Adrien was silent the whole time just looking at the phone sometimes then put it aside and ate his rice listening to their arguments.

"Just feel kind of weird or should I say we miss the four eyes," He chuckled. Alexa's face turned red and it made me laugh, no offence.

"Miss Alexandra?" A voice came from behind. Alexa turned her head and her expression changed from rage to serious like she is in some kind of official meeting.

"Yes, that's me. Is there something?" We sat there silently as she spoke with them. I slowly turned around to see a woman was standing there wearing a suit. Her blonde hair tied to a pony and she looked like she was in her mid-thirties.

"No it's just was a surprise to meet you in person." She said with a smile. "May I go, my husband is waiting at a table." Alexa nodded and the woman smiled and left.

"Four eyes, what was that?" Skyler asked quite impressed.

"Nothing much just a friend from work," She said casually taking a sip of water.

"That looked more formal for a friend." He added.

"Yes, she's more like a client." She said as she took another sushi.

Then the waiter came and asked if we want anything else. "Do you have wine?" Skyler asked him and he nodded. "4 wines then?"

"I don't drink," Adrien spoke finally.

"I have to drive so I am skipping." Alexa said.

"Two wines please." Skyler told the waiter and he left.

After some time we all almost finished our food when the wine came. We did a cheers and then took a sip. Then Skyler spoke, "Hey four eyes, give me your number. It's been like so long since we spoke." Alexa nodded. "When was the last time we met actually?"

"High school prom," She replied. Hearing that I looked up from my plate and I looked at Adrien who was already looking at me.

"Why did you do it? I can't believe it, matter of fact that I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't heard it with my own ears." I stared at him, tears falling down my cheeks. "You knew how much I liked her and still. Unbelievable," Saying he walked away.

"Sam!" I blinked fast as I came back from those memories. "Sam, is something wrong?" Skyler asked concerned.

"No I just zoned out, just like that." I said as I lowered my head.

"So we were talking about…" Skyler continued when I looked back up to see Adrien was still looking at me. My heart sank. I pulled my chair back, Alexa flinched.

"Where are you going?" She asked. I could see that she felt something was off.

"I just wanted to use the restroom," I said as I stood up. Skyler turned to Adrien who was still looking at me. His eyes filled with grief. I just walked towards the restroom.

I entered there, stood in front of the mirror and let the tear escape from my eyes. All those memories were just too much to bare. After a few minutes I pulled myself together and came out of the restroom. No smudged makeup, no ruined mascara, all good. When I got to the table Skyler was sitting there facing Adrien like his jaw dropped.

"And you believed her?" Skyler asked in shock. I was sitting there clueless about what their conversation was. "Dude she is like a pretty face with an awful heart, I doubt she even have a heart." He said as he took a sip of his wine.

My phone beeped and it was mom. She texted me to purchase some groceries on my way back. I took it as an excuse to leave. "Guys mom texted me to get home. I am really sorry, it was fun but I have to leave." I said as I stood up

"Hey! You sure you are alright?" Skyler asked.

"Should I pay the bill?" I asked dodging the question.

"Nah! It's my treat." Alexa said. I nodded and started to walk towards the exit. I could feel them staring at me as I exited the place.

I walked a little further when a car stopped beside me. This time it was Alexa. She asked me to get in, and I did. She then started to drive.

"Adrien told everything." She said, her eyes on the road.

"About what?" I asked confused, I really was too as I had no idea what they were talking back there.

"About what happened at the day of the Prom.?" She said this time she looked at me. "I thought there were no secrets between us." Her tone was serious and as if she was hurt. "You know I miss the time you used to call me Alex and not Alexa. It feels so…" She paused, took a deep breath and continued, "distant, like you are pulling away from me, from all of us." I sighed and looked down. I had nothing to say. "I had seen you running out of the hall in tears that day."

"What?" The word just escaped from my mouth. "But, How? You were with Julien."

"It doesn't mean that I will not care about you at all." She said. Car stopped at the red signal and she turned to me, "What did you think, that when I am with my boyfriend I will just forget you ever existed?" I nodded stupidly. "Oh my god! Girl!" she then sighed. "Hope you remember that I called you, texted you multiple times after that day just to know the reason."

"I just shut myself in my room for a week that time so I didn't know," I said as I tried to recollect it.

"Did you ever talk to Jezelle after that?" she asked softly. Jezelle, my blood started to boil in the mention of her name. Like someone said once, 'The one closest to you are your biggest enemy' and it was true.

"Yes, I confronted her, but she denied it," I said, my voice cracked. Alexa put her hand on mine.

"She is a great liar, and don't listen to others I trust you, and after seeing his response I am sure Skyler trusts you too." She squeezes my hand. "So no more secrets, Kay?" I smiled, leaned back on the seat and took a deep breath. It felt like a weight has been off my chest.

Suddenly her phone started to ring, it was Skyler she answered it through Bluetooth. "Hey! Did you talk to her? How is she feeling? Is she alright?" He said all in one breathe. I chuckled quietly.

"She's alright dude." Alexa said trying to control her laugh. "Are you driving Chipmunk?" She asked when we heard the horn from the other side of the call.

"Nah! Adrien is driving." He said casually. "You want to talk to him just say it's on speaker phone."

"No nothing, so that's it? You called to check up on her?" She said sarcastically.

"I had a chat with this dude after you left," he said. We both looked at each other and thought what he would've talked to him about. "He asked me to call you." My eyes widened as I heard Adrien asking Skyler to shut up.

"He did?" I asked curiously.

"Duh! Everything happened was just some misunderstandings, it's all good now." He said casually. "Okay then you girls carry on, I'm hanging up." With that he hung up.

"See I told you, there is nothing in the world that can't be fixed," she said with a smile.

"But there are somethings too you know." I said, my voice came out like a whisper.

"Why does she hate you so much exactly?" She looked at me then back at the road. "I have heard, more like seen you guys were inseparable once, what changed?"

"I have no idea," I said as I looked at the sky. "You know it all started when we entered high school. The time we kind of got drifted away" I cleared my throat and continued. "The day she got her so called new friends."

She was right, we were like best of friends but sometimes even the best friends could be our best foes.

I should've known.
