Chapter 6 - 6

"How can we break up like this? What's the reason for our split? You can't just leave me in the dark!" he exclaimed.

I shot him a cool glance and replied, "The fact that you don't see your own mistakes is exactly why I want to break up."

"If you're unhappy with me, just say so," he protested.

But I had spoken up. And what was his response? Simply, "You're being too difficult."

I wondered what kind of woman could remain unbothered seeing her partner being so attentive to another girl.

"Robin, I'm exhausted. Please stop this pointless argument. Don't you find it demeaning?"

"Is this about the fireworks I set off for Olivi that day?"

See? Even now, he used her nickname so fondly while addressing me formally.

At times, I felt like Olivia was actually his girlfriend.

Taking a deep breath, I asked calmly, "Do you remember what day that was?"

Robin looked puzzled for a moment.

I explained, "It was my birthday. I didn't get any wishes or presents from you. All I got was your deceit."

"I... I'm sorry for lying. I just didn't want to upset you," he stammered.

I stared at him silently, feeling let down.

Despite all I'd said, he still missed the main point.

"I've had a long day at work. Can I rest now, please?"

Robin hesitated, gripping my wrist, unwilling to let go. "Sophia, we..."

Before he could finish, his phone started ringing in his pocket.

Standing close, I could see the caller's name on his screen.

"Looks like Olivi's calling again. You should go to her."

I forcefully pushed his hand away and headed home without looking back. Robin didn't follow. When I glanced out the window, he was gone.

I turned away, laughing bitterly at myself.

The following day at work, I had just sat down when a coworker approached, phone in hand.

"Sophia, have you seen that couple's video? There's an update."

I glimpsed the clip. Robin had his back to the camera, his face hidden, but Olivia, embracing him, wore a clear smile.

The street was well-lit, and passing cars honked, providing a soundtrack to this picturesque moment.

"How romantic! The YouTuber said she encountered this pair while heading home last night. The mood was so lovely, she had to film it."

"Yeah, her boyfriend even splurged on fireworks for her, letting everyone in town see the spectacle. It's so enviable. I hope they stay happy."

"They're bound to be. Look how much he adores her. We might hear wedding bells soon."

As I listened, disappointment spread through me like ice water.

It wasn't that he couldn't love; he just didn't love me.

Everything became clear, and I suddenly felt unburdened.

I smiled and replied, "They do make a good pair. I hope they tie the knot soon."

I wished for their lasting union to prevent harm to other unsuspecting individuals.
