Chapter 75 - The Shadow of Mutations

POV: Rick

As they left the base behind, Rick could feel the weight of the revelations pressing down on him. The knowledge that the mutation had been man-made gnawed at his mind, a dangerous secret that changed everything.

He glanced at Kane, who walked ahead of the group with an easy, measured stride. Rick still didn't trust him, but with each new discovery, it was clear that Kane knew far more than he let on.

Sarah caught up to him, her expression mirroring his unease. "Do you believe him? That this mutation was created on purpose?"

Rick let out a slow breath. "I don't know, but it makes sense. This level of mutation… it's too precise. Like it's designed to evolve, to spread." His voice lowered, a flicker of anger sparking in his eyes. "Someone did this. And they abandoned us to clean up their mess."

Sarah's gaze drifted to the zombies leading their group—Jenna, Carl, and the others. It was surreal to think that they, too, were victims of this experiment. They weren't mindless monsters; they were part of a chain reaction that had spiraled out of control.

"What now?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Rick squared his shoulders, a determined look in his eyes. "We keep moving forward. And we watch our backs. If there are more mutations out here, we can't let our guard down."

---

POV: Jenna

Jenna could sense the humans' fear and distrust, but she was too focused on the revelations from the base to care. The idea that she—and others like her—were products of some experiment wasn't exactly surprising, but it added a new layer of anger.

"So, we're science projects gone wrong," she muttered to Carl as they walked. "That explains a lot."

Carl gave her a sidelong glance. "Are you really that surprised?"

Jenna shrugged. "No, but it doesn't mean I like it. Whoever did this… they owe us."

Carl's gaze hardened. "They owe a lot of people. And if there are others out there who survived, we'll find them."

Jenna nodded, her mind already racing with possibilities. If they were experiments, then there could be more like them. Mutations that were stronger, faster, maybe even deadlier.

She glanced around at the trees, noting the unnatural growths and twisted roots that hinted at the presence of other mutated creatures. They were moving through a dangerous ecosystem now—one that seemed to be evolving with each passing day.

---

POV: Sarah

The forest had taken on an even more sinister tone since they'd left the base. Strange noises echoed through the trees—sounds that didn't belong to any animal Sarah recognized. She kept her weapon close, her nerves stretched thin as they pressed onward.

As they continued, she noticed something strange. Tracks in the dirt, large and clawed, as though some massive creature had passed through recently. The footprints were deep, and the soil around them was disturbed, as if the creature had moved with incredible force.

"Rick, look," she whispered, pointing to the tracks.

Rick's face darkened as he examined them. "That's… not good. Whatever left these, it's bigger than anything we've seen so far."

Kane knelt beside the tracks, his expression unreadable. "The mutation spreads. Whatever this creature is, it's adapting to its environment. And if it's as large as it seems, we may not be the only ones hunting it."

Sarah's heart pounded at the implications. They were walking into unknown territory, facing mutated creatures that were likely as intelligent as they were deadly. And somewhere, lurking in the shadows, were other groups—survivors, perhaps, or something worse.

---

POV: Carl

Carl's senses were on high alert. He could feel the presence of others around them, though they stayed hidden in the dense undergrowth. The group wasn't alone, and he had the distinct feeling that they were being watched.

"Stay close," he whispered to Jenna, his gaze flicking to the surrounding trees. "We're not alone."

Jenna nodded, her eyes narrowing as she scanned the area. "Think it's more mutants?"

"Or survivors. Either way, we need to be careful." Carl's voice was low, his instincts sharp. He could feel the threat closing in, like a predator circling its prey.

Suddenly, a rustle from the bushes caught his attention. Carl drew his weapon, his eyes locking onto the source of the noise. Jenna did the same, her zombie gang tensing behind her as they prepared for an attack.

Out of the shadows, a group of figures emerged. They were zombies, but not like Jenna and her gang. These zombies moved with a strange coordination, their eyes sharp and focused. They weren't mindless—they were organized.

Carl exchanged a look with Jenna, realization dawning on him. "Controlled zombies."

Jenna's expression hardened. "Looks like someone's got an army."

---

POV: Rick

Rick could only watch in horror as the new zombie group emerged. They weren't just any zombies—they were intelligent, just like Jenna and Carl. But there was something different about them, a darker, more sinister edge.

"Whoever's controlling them… they're using these zombies as weapons," he murmured, a chill running down his spine.

Kane's expression was grim as he observed the controlled zombies. "We're dealing with something beyond mutation now. This is deliberate, organized. Whoever's behind this… they're prepared."

The two groups faced each other, tension thick in the air. Rick tightened his grip on his weapon, his gaze locked on the enemy zombies. They hadn't made a move yet, but he knew that one wrong step could trigger a bloodbath.

Finally, one of the controlled zombies stepped forward, his gaze focused on Kane. "You trespass in our territory."

Kane stepped forward, his expression calm but wary. "We're only passing through. We don't want trouble."

The zombie tilted his head, studying Kane with a strange, predatory intelligence. "This forest belongs to us now. Leave, or face the consequences."

Rick felt his heart race, knowing that they couldn't afford to fight another battle. But as he glanced at Kane, he saw a flicker of determination in the man's eyes.

"We're not here to take anything from you," Kane replied, his voice steady. "But we do want answers. There's a mutation spreading through this forest, and we're trying to stop it."

The zombie leader considered this, his gaze shifting between Kane and the rest of the group. "Our orders are to protect this territory. If you interfere, you will be dealt with."

Kane nodded slowly, his expression thoughtful. "Then perhaps we can work together. We're not looking to fight—only to understand."

The zombie leader's eyes narrowed, but he seemed to relax slightly. "Then stay out of our way."

Without another word, the controlled zombies retreated back into the forest, leaving the group in tense silence.

---

POV: Jenna

Jenna let out a slow breath as the controlled zombies disappeared into the trees. The encounter had rattled her more than she wanted to admit. These weren't just zombies—they were an organized force, a faction with its own agenda.

"Well, that was… weird," she muttered, glancing at Carl. "Controlled zombies. Just what we needed."

Carl's expression was grim. "It means we're not just dealing with random mutations anymore. This is organized. Whoever's behind this, they're building an army."

Jenna clenched her fists, a spark of anger igniting within her. She hadn't chosen to become a zombie, but she'd fought to survive in this twisted world. Now, she realized that someone was using zombies as weapons, treating them like pawns in a game she didn't understand.

"We'll figure it out," she said, her voice filled with determination. "And when we do, they'll regret messing with us."

As they regrouped and prepared to move forward, Jenna felt a renewed sense of purpose. The journey had become more than just survival; it was a fight for answers, for justice, and for control over their own fates.
