Chapter 5: Shadows in the Kingdom

The sun was setting over the horizon as Jaden emerged from the Crimson Abyss, its rays casting long shadows across the blood-soaked ground beneath his feet. The land around the dungeon was barren and desolate, twisted by the corrupting energy that seeped from the abyss. Despite the beauty of the twilight sky, the area felt oppressive, as if the abyss itself still lingered just out of sight.

Jaden glanced back at the dungeon entrance one last time. The power of the Abyssal Core still hummed within him, its dark energy resonating with the very air. He could feel it pulsing beneath his skin, a constant reminder of the immense power he now held.

[System Alert: New Evolution Path Unlocked]

[Would you like to view available evolution options?]

---

Jaden raised an eyebrow. Evolution paths were another mechanic of the system, a way to further specialize one's abilities. In the novel, Revan had taken the path of a "Shadow Warrior," a powerful class that allowed him to master shadow-based techniques. But Jaden was no longer bound by the novel's story.

He mentally selected "yes," and a new screen appeared before him.

---

Evolution Path Options:

Shadow Sovereign (Abyssal specialization): Increases control over shadows and allows the user to create shadow armies.

Dark Blade Master (Physical specialization): Focuses on enhancing the user's swordsmanship with dark energy, amplifying all physical attacks.

Abyss Walker (Spatial specialization): Grants the ability to freely manipulate space, including teleportation and dimensional storage.

---

Jaden studied the options carefully. Each path offered incredible power, but he had no intention of limiting himself. He needed versatility, something that would allow him to dominate any battlefield. After a moment of consideration, he made his choice.

[Evolution Path Chosen: Abyss Walker]

[Skills Unlocked: Abyssal Step, Dimensional Pocket]

[Stat Increase: Agility +10, Mana +15]

The moment he selected the Abyss Walker path, Jaden felt a shift within himself. His body seemed lighter, his movements more fluid, and a strange awareness of the space around him settled into his mind. He tested his new power, activating Abyssal Step. In an instant, the world blurred, and he reappeared several meters away, as if he had simply stepped through the shadows.

A satisfied smirk crossed his face. The ability to manipulate space was exactly what he needed—perfect for both combat and exploration. With this, he could strike before his enemies even knew he was there.

He closed the system screen and glanced toward the distant city of Aetheris, the capital of the Asteria Kingdom. The novel's protagonist, Revan, was likely there by now, following the main storyline and making allies, unaware of the monster that lurked just beyond the horizon.

Jaden's gaze darkened. Revan, the so-called "hero," would soon be nothing more than a footnote in history. The world had always revolved around him, but Jaden would take that spotlight now.

With a final look at the setting sun, Jaden turned toward the distant city and began walking, his steps silent as the shadows clung to him like a second skin.

Two Days Later – Aetheris, Capital of Asteria Kingdom

The city of Aetheris was a sprawling metropolis, filled with towering stone buildings, bustling marketplaces, and throngs of people from all walks of life. It was a hub of commerce, magic, and political power, the heart of the kingdom. To most, it was a place of opportunity and wealth.

To Jaden, it was a battlefield waiting to be claimed.

As he entered the gates of the city, blending seamlessly into the crowds, he activated Dimensional Pocket, storing his more dangerous weapons out of sight. He had no desire to draw unnecessary attention, not yet. His first goal was simple: gather information.

He navigated the streets with ease, his sharp eyes scanning the environment. The city was as lively as he remembered from the novel, filled with merchants hawking their wares, adventurers boasting of their latest conquests, and nobles flaunting their wealth. But beneath the surface, he could feel the tension building.

The kingdom was at a critical point in the story—on the verge of being invaded by a neighboring empire. This was when Revan would rise as a hero, uniting the people against the common enemy and earning the favor of the royal family. Jaden knew all the key players: the king, the princess, the high-ranking nobles. But he wasn't here to play politics. He had his own plans.

Jaden made his way to the Adventurers' Guild, the central hub for all those seeking quests, information, and connections. The guild was a towering structure, bustling with activity. Adventurers of all kinds—warriors, mages, and rogues—filled the large hall, gathering in groups to plan their next missions.

He approached the reception desk, where a young woman with short brown hair and a friendly smile greeted him.

"Welcome to the Adventurers' Guild! How can I help you today?"

"I'm looking for information," Jaden said, his voice calm but commanding. "Specifically about the dungeons in this region and any high-ranking adventurers who've recently registered."

The receptionist blinked, clearly surprised by his directness, but she quickly recovered. "Of course. We have several dungeons located near the city. Are you interested in joining a party or exploring solo?"

"Solo," Jaden replied without hesitation. "And I'm looking for someone who might stand out—a new adventurer making waves recently."

The receptionist tapped a few keys on the glowing screen in front of her. "Ah, yes! There is someone who fits that description. A young man named Revan. He's gained quite a reputation recently for his bravery and strength. He's already completed several high-ranking quests and has even caught the attention of some of the nobles."

Jaden's expression remained neutral, but inside, he felt a flicker of amusement. So, Revan had already started making a name for himself. No matter. It wouldn't be long before he overtook him.

"Where is he now?" Jaden asked, his tone casual.

The receptionist hesitated for a moment, as if unsure whether she should share that information. But Jaden's cold, piercing gaze convinced her otherwise.

"I believe he's been invited to the palace. There's a banquet tonight in honor of the kingdom's upcoming festival. A lot of high-profile adventurers will be attending."

Jaden thanked her and turned to leave, his mind already calculating his next move.

The banquet. It would be the perfect opportunity to observe Revan—and perhaps to strike. The palace would be filled with nobles, soldiers, and adventurers, all of them oblivious to the storm that was about to descend upon them.

Jaden's lips curled into a cold smile as he disappeared into the shadows of the bustling city.

That Evening – Royal Palace, Aetheris

The grand banquet hall of the royal palace was a sight to behold. Massive chandeliers hung from the ceiling, casting golden light over the elegantly dressed guests below. Long tables were lined with food and drink, and the air was filled with the sound of laughter, music, and the clinking of glasses.

Revan stood near the center of the room, surrounded by a small group of admirers. He looked every bit the hero the novel had described—tall, handsome, and charismatic, with an easy smile that put others at ease. His sword, a gleaming blade gifted to him by the king, hung at his side, marking him as one of the kingdom's rising stars.

Jaden watched from the shadows, his cold eyes fixed on Revan. He could already see how the people fawned over him, how the nobles whispered his name with admiration. But none of them knew what was coming.

As the music played and the banquet continued, Jaden's gaze never left Revan.

Soon, the real game would begin.
