Chapter 4 - Arrival at the Academy

The carriage jolted softly as it traveled through the winding, hidden path, the dense forest pressing in on both sides. Moonlight barely pierced through the canopy above, casting long shadows over the road. Zara sat back in her seat, fingers clutching the edge of the window as she watched the path disappear behind them, swallowed by darkness.

Her heart raced. What if they find me? she thought. The tension in her chest grew with each passing moment, imagining the consequences if the humans discovered the secret route her father had created—an invisible gateway between the demon and human kingdoms. She squeezed her eyes shut, forcing herself to breathe. No one will find me. Father would never let that happen. The thought brought her a measure of comfort, but the lingering fear wouldn't completely fade. Her father's protection had always been absolute, yet the danger still felt too close, too real.

"Miss Zara," came the calm voice of her butler from the opposite seat, pulling her from her spiraling thoughts. His steady gaze met hers, a silent reassurance. "We're nearly there."

Zara nodded and glanced outside, her breath catching as the landscape shifted. In the distance, rising above the forested hills, was the Magic Academy. Even at night, the academy was breathtaking. Towers that seemed to scrape the stars rose into the sky, their tips glowing softly with enchantments. The entire structure was bathed in a faint, ethereal glow, the protective barriers around it shimmering like a transparent veil of light.

The academy wasn't just a school; it looked like a castle from an ancient legend, with towering spires, grand archways, and walls lined with intricate carvings of mythical creatures. Magic thrummed in the air, as if the very stones of the academy were alive. Despite her earlier fears, Zara felt a flutter of awe.

This is where I'll learn to control my magic. My future starts here, she thought, her heart racing for an entirely new reason.

As the carriage came to a halt at the grand entrance, Zara's eyes widened at the sight of a girl waiting for her. She was beautiful, with long, glossy hair that shimmered like starlight and bright blue eyes that almost seemed to glow in the night. She wore the academy's uniform, the dark blues and golds contrasting with her radiant appearance.

"Hello, Zara." The girl's voice was soft but steady, her tone welcoming. "I'm Lily. The headmaster sent me to guide you to your dormitory."

Zara hesitated, a nervous lump forming in her throat. Does she know who I am? The thought that someone might recognize her as a demon stirred her anxiety, but Lily's calm, friendly demeanor eased her fears.

"Thank you," Zara replied quietly, stepping out of the carriage as the butler came to stand beside her. He smiled warmly, though she could see the sadness behind his eyes.

"My lady," the butler began, his voice low, "this is where we part ways. You will do great things here, of that I'm sure. Remember everything your father has taught you."

Zara swallowed the lump in her throat, feeling a pang of loneliness wash over her. The butler had been her constant companion, a protective figure throughout her life in the demon kingdom. Now, standing on the threshold of the unknown, she felt the weight of his departure settle heavily on her shoulders.

"I'll miss you," she whispered, her voice barely audible. The butler bowed his head, a soft smile touching his lips.

"And I, you, Miss Zara. But you are strong, just like your father. You'll be safe here." With a final nod, he turned and mounted the carriage, leaving her in Lily's company. As the carriage disappeared into the night, Zara stood frozen for a moment, the sense of abandonment sharp in her chest.

"Shall we?" Lily's gentle voice broke through her thoughts.

Zara nodded, casting one last glance at the fading silhouette of the carriage before following Lily through the academy's grand gates.

The grounds were vast—endless courtyards lined with statues, fountains that glowed with magical light, and towering trees whose leaves shimmered as if made of silver. The entire campus felt alive with magic, its energy humming beneath her feet. She felt small in its presence, yet somehow, she felt a sense of belonging.

This is where I'm meant to be, Zara thought, though her heart still ached with nervousness.

As they walked, Zara stole glances at Lily, trying to understand her new companion. She seemed so at ease, as if this magical world was second nature to her. Zara wondered what it would be like to move through life with such grace and confidence.

When they arrived at the dormitory, Zara was taken aback by its magnificence. The building was grand, almost like a palace itself, with tall windows that let the moonlight stream through. The stone walls were adorned with enchanted paintings that moved, and the air smelled faintly of lavender and aged wood.

Lily led her up a spiral staircase, stopping at a heavy wooden door. "This is your room," she said, opening it with a wave of her hand. The door swung open, revealing a space that took Zara's breath away.

The room was beautifully decorated—far more elegant than she had expected for a dormitory. Moonlight poured through the large window, casting soft shadows over the two beds that sat opposite each other. The curtains danced softly in the night breeze, creating a serene, almost magical atmosphere.

"This is… my room?" Zara asked, stepping inside, her voice barely a whisper.

Lily smiled. "Ours, actually. We'll be roommates." She walked over to one of the beds and sat down, patting the space beside her. "It's a tradition here to share rooms with another student for your entire time at the academy."

Zara hesitated for a moment before sitting on the edge of her bed. The weight of everything—the journey, the academy, the unknowns of tomorrow—pressed down on her.

Lily's smile softened. "We have a test tomorrow, first thing in the morning. Don't worry, it's just to assess our abilities, not to judge us. You'll do fine."

Zara nodded, though the nerves in her stomach twisted uncomfortably. A test already? Her mind raced, thinking of everything she'd learned in her father's realm, and all the things she feared might be discovered.

As she settled into bed, the soft glow of the moon illuminating the room, Zara whispered to herself, I'll do my best. I won't let Father down. But despite her determination, sleep did not come easily, her thoughts lingering on the test and what it would reveal about her true identity.

In the quiet of the night, with the moonlight streaming through the window, Zara closed her eyes, steeling herself for what was to come.
