They emerged from the collapsing cavern into the open air of the Forest, panting and covered in dust. The sun had already set, and the moon hung low in the sky, casting a silver light over the darkened forest. The distant howls of Abyssal creatures echoed in the night, a reminder that their journey was far from over.
Garret stretched his arms, rolling his shoulders to ease the tension. "That was too close for comfort. I'd rather not do that again anytime soon."
Elara's brow furrowed as she looked back towards the sealed cavern. "The relic's energy was… unnatural, even for this forest. Whatever William did, it affected the Thornveil's corruption. Maybe it's connected to the ancient powers lingering here."
William remained silent, his thoughts drawn back to his confrontation with the Thornveil's reflection and the revelation of his last name. There was a darkness within him that he was only beginning to understand, a power that seemed to have a will of its own. He needed answers, but more than that, he needed to know if this power would ultimately help or hinder him on his journey.
As the trio pressed onward through the forest, they stumbled upon a small clearing where the remnants of an old campsite lay. The fire pit had long since gone cold, and the abandoned supplies were covered in moss and dirt. It was clear that whoever had camped there had left in a hurry.
Elara crouched down, inspecting the scattered belongings. "Looks like someone was here recently… and they weren't prepared for the corruption. We should be cautious."
William's eyes wandered across the clearing, stopping at a peculiar sight—a stone tablet partially buried in the ground, covered in strange symbols. He approached it, brushing away the dirt and leaves. As he did, the Thornveil within him stirred, reacting to the tablet's presence.
The symbols seemed to pulse with a faint light, drawing William's attention deeper into their patterns. Without fully understanding why, he reached out and placed his hand on the stone. The world around him blurred, and a vision overtook his senses.
He found himself standing in a vast hall lined with ancient pillars, each one adorned with carvings depicting a great tree. The air was thick with the scent of moss and earth, and the distant sound of whispers echoed through the hall. At the center of the room stood a massive tree, its branches twisting upward toward the ceiling, where they vanished into darkness.
"The Thornveil is more than you know," a voice spoke from the shadows. "It is a path to the forgotten. To the power that once held dominion over the Abyss."
William turned toward the voice, his eyes narrowing. "Who are you? What is this place?"
A figure emerged from the darkness, cloaked in shadow. "This is a memory, and I am but a fragment of what was lost. You have taken the first steps to understanding, but the path ahead is treacherous. You must seek the roots of the Thornveil. Only then will you find the answers you seek."
The vision ended abruptly, leaving William standing alone in the clearing once more. The symbols on the tablet dimmed, and the forest seemed to grow darker around him. He took a step back, his heart racing.
"What did you see?" Elara asked, her voice breaking through the silence.
"A memory," William replied. "Or maybe a warning. Whatever it was, it spoke of the Thornveil's roots… and a power that was lost."
Elara and Garret exchanged glances, the weight of William's words sinking in. "Then it sounds like we need to find these roots," Garret said. "Before the Abyss finds us."
As the trio prepared to continue their journey, a faint tremor rippled through the earth beneath them, followed by a low rumble that seemed to come from deep within the forest. It was as if the land itself was awakening, responding to the Thornveil's call.
And somewhere in the darkness, something stirred.
