Chapter 2 - Mind Made Up

Alexis walked gracefully into the company, amidst greetings and warm welcome from every of the staff.

"Surprise!" She had exclaimed as she opened the door to Evan's office but the sight before her had her stand transfixed.

There Evan was, not busy as he had claimed he would, but just sitting on his chair, pressing his phone and sipping his coffee.

As he saw his wife, Evan quickly composed himself and dropped his phone.

"What are you doing here? You didn't tell me..." Evan trailed off, holding her gaze.

"Well, that is why it is a surprise. Now, tell me, can we say it is a surprise too as you seem to have forgotten about my birthday?" Alexis said with a small smile, walking into the room. She was trying to not show she was disappointed.

"Maybe he has a lot of work to handle and think about, these days. It is no big deal." Alexis thought to herself.

Evan looked shocked at her statement but he quickly recovered and a bright smile made its way on his face.

"How can I forget your birthday?" He asked rhetorically and stood up from his chair. Alexis raised an eyebrow.

He walked up to her and pulled her into a warm hug.

"Happy birthday, sweetheart. Actually, I have plans for the day but it might be late. And that is because my schedule today is very tight. Some clients are coming in from Sweden and they specifically asked for my presence." He explained to her, still hugging her so they couldn't see each other's face.

Alexis detached from the hug then looked straight into his eyes.

"Why does it seem like I am seeing deceit in those adorable brown eyes?" She thought to herself, her intelligence coming out to play.

"You don't believe me? Darling, do you really think I forgot your birthday?" Evan asked, sounding and looking defensive.

"Erm, not really..." Alexis mumbled then nodded her head firmly.

"Of course not. I know the sweet man I got married to. He definitely has plans for my big day." She added, her countenance changing immediately. Although, it was forceful, a smile spread across her face.

"I can't just conclude something is wrong yet." That was the thought she had by letting her countenance change.

"That is a given!" Evan replied her with a small smile and as his eyes wandered around his table, he saw a gift card he had no idea how it got there.

"Oh, you are a life saver!" Evan said inwardly, in relief and grabbed the card from his table.

"Here!" He handed over the card to Alexis, the small smile on his face growing bigger.

"I told you I have been preparing. That is part of the preparation. But I must say, your impatience might have an impact on my plans now." Evan said and let out a chuckle.

Alexis blinked her eyes, not knowing what to make of the situation. But she swallowed hard and pretended to not notice anything.

"Okay, I apologize for being impatient." She told him and drawing him closer to her body, she placed a kiss on his lips.

At that moment, Evan's secretary walked into the office, holding a tray of tea which was meant to entertain Alexis.

At the secretary's entrance, Alexis left Evan and went to sit on the sofa placed opposite Evan's chair and table.

"This is for you ma'am. I hope your taste hasn't changed yet. You know it's been long since I served you." The secretary, Sabrina said to Alexis with a smile.

"No, I love old things and hardly change my preference." Alexis said, managing a smile. Sabrina was a loved secretary that had been working under her for a long time, before she started working for her husband.

"And happy birthday ma'am." Sabrina wished her. Alexis' face lightened up at that and a genuine smile appeared on her face.

"Thank yo..." Alexis was saying but quickly stopped as her eyes saw Sabrina's hand. The latter was bent over the small table before Alexis' seat and was busy stirring the tea she just made for Alexis.

"What the heck?" Alexis blurted out then she scoffed in disbelief.

"Is everything okay, ma'am?" Sabrina asked, her eyes locked on Alexis' face in worry.

"What is that?" Evan who had stood by Alexis' seat also asked, cluelessly.

"I knew it. My instincts is never wrong. I felt it, that something is amiss. So this is it?" Alexis asked rhetorically, talking more to herself than the duo who were asking her what was wrong.

As she said that, her gaze was fixed on Sabrina's finger. And on her index finger sat the diamond shaped ring that Alexis saw on her husband's desk.

"Ma'am?" Sabrina called out. And as she saw where Alexis' gaze was, a knowing smirk started playing at Sabrina's lips.

"Took you long enough to realize!" Sabrina exclaimed inwardly.

Alexis looked up at Sabrina and when she saw the smirk playing at her lips, her face contorted with rage.

"You lowlife, how dare you?" Alexis yelled in anger and in the heat of the moment, she grabbed the cup of hot tea that Sabrina had been making and without hesitation threw the content on Sabrina's face.

Sabrina shrieked in shock and pain, staggering backwards.

"Lexi, what are you doing? You can't do that in a corporate environment." Evan shouted, and instinctively he went to Sabrina's aid.

"Are you okay?" Evan asked Sabrina and quickly pulled out his handkerchief, using it to wipe away the liquid on the latter's face.

At the display, Alexis fumed and got up from the seat.

"Really, Evan? So this is what you have been up to?" Alexis asked, gritting her teeth.

"Just what are you talking about? Will you calm down?" Evan retorted, pretending to be clueless.

"You deceiver, you have been cheating on me!" Alexis yelled and before Evan could open his mouth to talk, she slapped the man across his face, the loud noise reverberating through the silent room.

"I want a divorce!" A voice said.
