The bathroom had no hot water, so Wen Jing boiled a kettle of water, and Wen Nuan mixed it to take a simple bath. It was a one-bedroom apartment, where the bedroom was occupied by Mrs. Wen, and Wen Nuan and Wen Jing squeezed onto a small sofa in the living room.

The soundproofing was poor, and the sound of Mrs. Wen coughing and whimpering in pain at night was clearly audible to Wen Nuan, filling her with heartache.

While doing the laundry, she touched the embossed business card in her pocket.

Wen Nuan instinctively wanted to throw it downstairs, but after a moment's thought, she slipped it back into the pocket of her pajamas. Wen Jing couldn't sleep, curling up on the sofa and watching Wen Nuan wash and hang the clothes.

It was past midnight, yet the child's spirits were unusually high.

Wen Nuan urged her to sleep, but she stubbornly shook her head. The sisters had been treated like princesses since childhood, and the sudden fall from grace was inevitably hard to accept.
