Chapter 40 - Chapter 39: The Turning Tide

The battlefield echoed with the relentless clanging of swords, the fiery hum of magic, and the earth-shaking roars of demons. Varkath stood in the center of it all, like a towering dark monolith, his presence sucking the air from the arena. He hadn't even broken a sweat, while Kazuki and his friends were nearing their limits. Their breath came in ragged gasps, yet their determination refused to fade.

"We need to find his weak point. We're wearing ourselves out," Kazuki thought, clenching his fists, feeling the aching in his body intensify.

As he glanced at Serena and Leo, an idea began to form. Something in the way Varkath powered up before every massive strike, an overconfidence in his aura. If they could find a way to disrupt it, even for a moment, maybe they could land a critical blow.

"Guys!" Kazuki shouted over the chaos. "I think I know how we can take him down. He's using his aura to charge up before those devastating hits! We need to interrupt it somehow!"

Serena, her brow slick with sweat but her eyes sharp as ever, glanced at Kazuki. "That explains why our physical attacks aren't doing much. He's coating himself in that energy. If we break his focus…"

Kazuki nodded. "Exactly. Serena, you and Leo need to hit him from a distance with magic or fast strikes—keep his aura from charging. Lyra and I will handle the front and keep him distracted."

Leo wiped the sweat from his forehead, his face grim but resolute. "It's risky, but it's our best shot. Let's go for it."

Serena's blade gleamed under the flickering lights of the arena. She stepped forward, readying herself. "I'll hit him with speed and precision. Leo, back me up with your magic. Kazuki, you and Lyra keep his attention."

Lyra, who had been quietly dispatching lesser demons, grinned fiercely, her eyes blazing with determination. "I've got your back, Kazuki. Let's make this count."

The plan was risky, but it was the only option left. With a shared glance, the group moved as one, each member knowing their role.

Kazuki launched himself toward Varkath, his heart pounding in his chest. The ground beneath him cracked with the demon's raw power, but Kazuki's focus never wavered. He closed the distance between them, fists clenched, ready for battle.

Varkath's cold eyes gleamed as Kazuki approached. "Back for more, human? You're persistent, I'll give you that. But I'll crush you all the same."

Kazuki smirked, feigning confidence. "We'll see about that."

With a roar, Varkath lunged, his fist coated in dark energy as he swung at Kazuki with terrifying force. But Kazuki was ready this time. Instead of dodging back, he ducked under the punch, skimming past the hulking demon's side and landing a swift kick to his knee. It didn't do much damage, but it threw Varkath off balance for a second.

"Now, Serena!" Kazuki shouted.

Serena was already in motion. With inhuman speed, she dashed toward Varkath, her blade slicing through the air with precision. She aimed not for his armor or skin, but for the aura itself, the crackling energy that surrounded him. Her sword struck the dark veil of power, and to her surprise, it shimmered and wavered.

"Leo, now!" she called.

Leo raised his staff, his voice chanting ancient incantations as glowing sigils formed around him. "Let's see how you handle this!" he shouted, releasing a burst of pure magic directly toward Varkath. The energy blast collided with the demon's aura, and for the first time since the battle began, Varkath staggered.

The crowd gasped.

Kazuki saw the opening and didn't hesitate. With lightning-fast reflexes, he darted forward, delivering a powerful punch to Varkath's exposed chest. His fist connected with a resounding crack, and Varkath growled in pain, stumbling backward.

"You little…!" Varkath snarled, his eyes glowing with fury. His massive hands clenched, dark energy swirling around him again, but this time, it was unstable, flickering.

"It's working," Leo panted, his voice filled with surprise and hope. "We're breaking through!"

But Varkath was not defeated yet. With a furious roar, the demon general summoned even more energy, the ground trembling beneath his feet as he prepared to unleash a devastating attack.

"We have to stop him now!" Kazuki yelled, panic rising in his chest. If Varkath completed that attack, there would be no surviving it.

Serena, still moving with lightning speed, darted forward again, aiming for Varkath's legs. Her blade flashed, slicing through the dark energy around his knees. Varkath bellowed in rage, his balance faltering as he struggled to maintain his footing.

"Kazuki!" she shouted. "Go now! This is our chance!"

Kazuki didn't need to be told twice. Summoning every ounce of strength he had left, he launched himself at Varkath, fist raised. This time, his punch connected with the demon's jaw, sending shockwaves through his massive body.

For a moment, time seemed to slow. The crowd held its breath. Varkath teetered, his massive form swaying as he tried to regain control.

But then, with a final, guttural roar, Varkath's aura shattered. The dark energy surrounding him dissipated, and the demon general fell to one knee, weakened.

"We did it…" Leo gasped, disbelief washing over his face. "We actually did it."

But even as Kazuki stood over the fallen demon, his heart racing, he knew it wasn't over. Varkath was down, but he wasn't out.

With a low growl, Varkath looked up at Kazuki, his eyes burning with hatred. "You think… you've won? This… is far from over."

Kazuki raised his fists, ready to strike again, but before he could, Varkath's body began to glow with a sinister red light. The air around him vibrated with dark energy.

"No… this can't be good," Kazuki muttered, stepping back. "Everyone, get back!"

But it was too late.

With a deafening roar, Varkath unleashed a massive shockwave of energy, sending Kazuki and his friends flying backward. The ground beneath them cracked and shattered, and the arena was engulfed in a blinding red light.

Kazuki hit the ground hard, pain searing through his body. He tried to push himself up, but his limbs felt heavy, unresponsive.

As the light faded, Varkath stood tall once more, his body now coated in an even darker, more ominous aura. His wounds had healed, and his eyes glowed with a terrifying red hue.

"You thought you could defeat me?" Varkath sneered, his voice dripping with malice. "I am one of the Seven Generals. You'll need more than a few parlor tricks to kill me."

Kazuki's heart sank. They had fought so hard, and yet… Varkath was still standing. Stronger than ever.

But even as despair threatened to take hold, Kazuki forced himself to his feet, his body screaming in protest. "We're not done yet," he growled, his voice filled with determination.

Serena, Leo, and Lyra stood beside him, battered but unbroken. They were all exhausted, barely holding on, but none of them were ready to give up.

"We fight… together," Kazuki said, his voice unwavering. "We can still win."

And as the four of them faced off against Varkath, the crowd watched in awe, knowing that this battle was far from over.

The turning point had come, but the true test was only just beginning.
