Chapter 6: Echoes of the Past
The air in Astraea had shifted.
It wasn't just the gnawing sense of decay that hung over the city—buildings half-collapsed, roads cracked and overtaken by nature's slow vengeance, or the occasional distant scream that sent chills up the spine of anyone still brave enough to walk the streets. It was something deeper. An undercurrent of old memories, long-forgotten wounds, and a darkness that had begun to stretch its fingers over the city.
Lana stood on the rooftop of what was once Astraea's busiest library, gazing out over the city's ruins. She had spent countless hours here before the world had crumbled. A place of knowledge, warmth, and quiet. Now, all that remained was the brittle skeleton of a life long gone.
She clenched her fists, eyes narrowing at the horizon where black smoke rose in the distance. "How much longer can this place hold out?" she whispered, though no one was around to answer.
A shift in the wind carried the familiar scent of burning wood and rot—clear signs that another outbreak was happening. It was never-ending. No matter how much they fought, no matter how far they ran, Astraea always seemed to have another nightmare waiting just around the corner.
Lana wasn't alone for long. Footsteps echoed softly from behind her, and she didn't need to turn around to know who it was.
"Brooding again?" Rian's voice broke the silence, casual but laced with a hint of concern. His silhouette joined hers, and for a moment, the two stood together in quiet contemplation.
"What's the point of rebuilding if we can't even protect what's left?" Lana's words were sharp, more directed at herself than him. She hated the feeling of helplessness, the overwhelming knowledge that everything she did might be for nothing.
Rian sighed. "You're thinking about Astraea too much. You're trying to protect something that's already broken." His tone wasn't cruel, but honest. In a world full of walking corpses, hope could be dangerous.
Lana shook her head. "No. This city… it means something. Not just to me. It's where everything started."
Rian turned his gaze to her, his blue eyes narrowing. "Where everything started?"
Lana didn't answer, but her silence spoke volumes. There was something she wasn't telling him. Something about Astraea, something more than just the chaos they were surviving through day after day.
But Rian knew better than to press her for answers. He'd learned early on that Lana was someone who only shared when she was ready—and forcing the issue wouldn't help.
A sharp cry pierced the air, sending both of them into immediate alertness. It was close. Too close. And it wasn't just one of the infected—it was something worse.
"They're here," Lana muttered, drawing her weapon. Rian did the same, his posture shifting from relaxed to battle-ready in an instant. Whatever was coming for them wasn't ordinary. They could feel it.

Down below, the streets of Astraea were a maze of debris and shadows. Kai darted through them, his heart racing as the eerie sound of something inhuman followed close behind him. He had no idea how long he'd been running—it felt like hours, but it could have been minutes. Time had a way of distorting itself in moments of pure terror.
He turned sharply into an alleyway, pressing his back against the cold brick wall. His breath came in shallow, uneven gasps. If he made too much noise, whatever was hunting him would find him, and there would be no escape this time.
A rustling sound echoed from the other end of the alley, and Kai froze, his entire body tense. He couldn't see it, but he knew it was there, lurking just out of sight. His fingers wrapped tightly around the hilt of his blade, his only defense against the darkness closing in.
And then it appeared—a figure, barely human anymore, but not quite a zombie either. Its eyes glowed faintly, a sickly green that reflected the rotting city around it. Its movements were slow, deliberate, as if it was savoring the fear it felt radiating from its prey.
Kai's grip tightened. He had two options—fight, or die.
But before he could make a move, a shadow passed overhead, and the creature stopped, its glowing eyes snapping upward. Kai followed its gaze and saw a figure on the rooftop—Rian, moving silently and swiftly, his bow already drawn and aimed.
With a single, fluid motion, Rian loosed an arrow, the sharp whistle cutting through the silence of the alleyway. The creature let out a horrifying screech as the arrow buried itself deep in its skull, its body collapsing lifelessly to the ground.
Kai exhaled, relief flooding his system, though his heart was still pounding. He didn't have time to bask in the safety that had just been granted, though, because Rian's voice echoed from above.
"Move it, Kai! We've got more incoming!"
---
The group reconvened in a small, hidden space deep within Astraea's underground. It was once a part of the city's vast subway system, but now it served as a temporary refuge for those still brave enough to fight for the city.
Rian leaned against the wall, arms crossed, while Lana sat nearby, still deep in thought. Kai paced the room, his usual energy dampened by the near-death experience.
"There's something wrong with Astraea," Kai muttered, not for the first time. "The infected are changing. We've seen it before, but… not like this. They're evolving."
"Not evolving," Lana corrected, her voice distant. "Being controlled."
Both men stared at her, waiting for her to continue. But she didn't. She only gazed at the old map of Astraea spread out before her, her finger tracing over the lines of the city's old districts, the places they'd once called home.
Rian frowned. "Lana, if there's something you know, now's the time to tell us."
For a long moment, the only sound in the room was the distant rumble of the city above them. Finally, Lana sighed and turned to face them both, her eyes betraying the weight of the knowledge she carried.
"There's something beneath Astraea," she began slowly, carefully choosing her words. "Something old. Something that's been here since before the outbreak. It's been waiting, hiding… and now it's waking up."
Kai's eyes widened. "You mean… that thing people have been whispering about? The 'shadow' of Astraea?"
Lana nodded grimly. "It's not just a rumor. It's real. And it's pulling the strings of everything that's been happening."
Rian cursed under his breath. "So, what are we dealing with? Some kind of ancient force?"
"I don't know exactly," Lana admitted, her gaze dropping. "But I do know it's not just about survival anymore. Astraea's fate is tied to whatever this thing is. If we don't stop it..."
She didn't need to finish the sentence. They all knew what would happen if they failed.
The room fell into an uneasy silence, each of them grappling with the enormity of what Lana had just revealed. Astraea was more than just a ruined city filled with the infected—it was a battleground for something far larger, something far more dangerous.
And now, they were caught in the center of it.
---
The distant sound of metal clanging against metal snapped them out of their grim thoughts. Rian was the first to react, his hand instinctively going for his weapon.
"Looks like we've got company," he muttered, his eyes scanning the dark tunnels around them.
Lana stood, her expression hardening. "Let's go. It's time we face whatever's hiding in the shadows."
With one last glance at the map of Astraea, Lana led the group into the darkness, their footsteps echoing as they moved deeper into the city's underbelly, toward whatever fate awaited them.
