Chapter 23 - Echoes of the Past

The sun had begun its descent, painting the sky with hues of gold and crimson as Chen Ning made his way through the palace corridors. The weight of the conversation with Prince Feng still lingered, a mix of confusion and curiosity swirling within him. Despite his best efforts to focus on his duties, his mind kept drifting back to the prince's unexpected confession.

As he approached the courtyard, he saw Crown Prince Cheng standing by a stone balustrade, gazing out at the sprawling gardens. Cheng's posture was relaxed, but there was a hint of tension in his expression, a sign that he was preoccupied with his thoughts. Chen Ning took a deep breath and approached the prince, his own thoughts still tangled from his earlier conversation.

"Your Highness," Chen Ning greeted, trying to sound as composed as possible. "Is there something troubling you?"

Cheng turned to face him, his eyes flickering with a mixture of surprise and curiosity. "Chen Ming. I was just... reflecting on things. There's been so much going on lately."

Chen Ning nodded, understanding the weight of Cheng's words. The recent events, including the loss of Liang Sei and the complexities of court life, had indeed cast a shadow over the palace. "It's been a difficult time for everyone. If there's anything I can do to assist, please let me know."

Cheng studied Chen Ning for a moment, his expression softening. "Actually, there is something. I've been thinking about how the recent events have affected us all, and I'd like to do something special for the people in the kingdom. Perhaps a grand event or a gesture of goodwill."

Chen Ning raised an eyebrow, intrigued by the prince's suggestion. "A grand event?"

Cheng nodded enthusiastically. "Yes. Something that would bring joy and unity to the people. I think it's important to show that despite the hardships, we can still find moments of happiness and celebration."

Chen Ning considered Cheng's idea. It was an admirable thought, though he knew it would require careful planning and resources. "That sounds like a wonderful initiative. I'll assist you in any way I can to make it a success."

Cheng's face brightened with gratitude. "Thank you, Chen Ming. I appreciate your support."

As they discussed the details of the proposed event, Chen Ning found himself drawn into Cheng's enthusiasm. The prince's vision for a grand celebration was infectious, and despite the underlying complexities, it was clear that Cheng's intentions were genuine.

The conversation soon turned to practical matters, and Chen Ning was engrossed in discussing plans for the event. However, as they worked together, he couldn't help but notice the subtle shifts in Cheng's demeanor. The prince's genuine desire to bring joy to the kingdom was evident, but there was also an undercurrent of personal reflection in his actions.

Later that evening, as Chen Ning was walking through the palace gardens, he found himself deep in thought. The conversation with Feng and Cheng's initiative had left him with much to consider. His feelings were still unresolved, and the complexities of his role in the palace were becoming increasingly apparent.

As he reached a secluded part of the garden, he heard footsteps approaching and turned to see General Liu walking towards him. The general's expression was thoughtful, his gaze scanning the surroundings before settling on Chen Ning.

"Chen Ming," Liu greeted, his tone carrying a hint of curiosity. "I've been meaning to speak with you."

Chen Ning looked up, meeting Liu's gaze. "General Liu. What can I do for you?"

Liu took a moment before speaking. "I've been reflecting on recent events and our interactions. I've noticed a change in you lately, and I wanted to understand it better."

Chen Ning's heart skipped a beat. Liu's observation was sharp, and he realized that his recent interactions with the princes and the turmoil within him must have been more evident than he thought. "I've been dealing with a lot of changes and emotions. It's been a challenging time."

Liu nodded, his expression contemplative. "I understand. It's been a time of upheaval for all of us. I just wanted to let you know that if you ever need someone to talk to or if there's anything I can do to support you, I'm here."

Chen Ning felt a surge of appreciation for Liu's offer. The general's straightforwardness and sincerity were a comfort amidst the uncertainties he faced. "Thank you, General Liu. That means a lot to me."

Liu's gaze lingered on Chen Ning for a moment before he nodded and began to turn away. "I'll leave you to your thoughts. Just remember, you're not alone in this."

As Liu walked away, Chen Ning stood in the quiet garden, reflecting on the general's words. The support and understanding he had received from both Liu and Cheng were reassuring, but the complexities of his own feelings and the dynamics of the palace remained challenging.
