Chapter 11 - Chapter 11: The Inner Faction

Xiang Chen's progress at the Evergreen Sect had not gone unnoticed. Word of his talents and rapid advancement spread quickly, earning him both admiration and envy from the disciples around him. He had learned meditation, energy control, and basic alchemy within days, a feat that some took months or even years to master.

One day, as he practiced his cultivation techniques in the courtyard, a group of senior disciples approached him. They wore robes embroidered with intricate patterns signifying their rank within the sect's inner faction. Among them was a tall figure with a cold expression—Wei Zhen, one of the most talented and respected disciples in the sect.

"Xiang Chen, isn't it?" Wei Zhen said, his voice carrying an edge.

Xiang Chen stood up, his expression calm but alert. "Yes. What can I do for you?"

Wei Zhen's eyes narrowed slightly. "I've heard about your accomplishments. Defeating the tournament champion, mastering the Healing Elixir—quite impressive for a newcomer."

The others murmured, their expressions mixed. Some looked at Xiang Chen with genuine curiosity, while others seemed skeptical or even hostile.

"I'm just doing my best to learn," Xiang Chen replied, sensing the tension in the air.

"The Evergreen Sect values talent," Wei Zhen continued, his tone sharp. "But talent alone isn't enough to earn a place in the inner faction. You have to prove your worth."

Xiang Chen felt a challenge in Wei Zhen's words. "And how would I do that?"

Wei Zhen smirked, crossing his arms. "There's a trial coming up—a test for those who wish to join the inner faction. Only those who pass will gain access to advanced cultivation techniques, resources, and the guidance of the sect's elders."

"I'm interested," Xiang Chen said confidently. "What does the trial involve?"

One of the disciples beside Wei Zhen chuckled. "The trial of the Spirit Forest. It's not for the faint-hearted. You'll have to navigate through the forest, locate spirit stones, and return within a time limit while avoiding dangerous creatures and rival disciples."

Wei Zhen added, "It's a test of skill, strength, and strategy. Many have tried, but only a few succeed."

Xiang Chen's eyes lit up with determination. "I'll take the trial. When does it start?"

Wei Zhen nodded, seemingly impressed by Xiang Chen's resolve. "Tomorrow at dawn. Meet us at the edge of the forest. Be prepared—this isn't a simple test of strength."

As the senior disciples walked away, Mei Ling approached, her expression serious. "You're taking the trial of the Spirit Forest?"

"Yes," Xiang Chen said. "I need to prove myself and gain access to the sect's advanced teachings."

Mei Ling's brow furrowed. "It's a dangerous trial, Xiang Chen. The creatures in the Spirit Forest are powerful, and some of the disciples who compete will stop at nothing to gain an advantage. Are you sure you're ready?"

Xiang Chen nodded firmly. "I know the risks, but this is a step I have to take. I want to grow stronger."

Mei Ling sighed, her expression softening. "Very well, but promise me you'll be careful. I've seen many talented disciples go into that forest and come out injured—or worse."

"I will," he assured her. "Thank you for your concern."

That night, Xiang Chen prepared for the trial. He meditated to center his energy, focusing on the lessons he had learned about controlling his power. He reviewed his techniques, practicing his movements and channeling his energy with precision. The Spirit Forest would be a test not just of his strength but of his discipline and adaptability.

The next morning, Xiang Chen arrived at the edge of the forest just as the first light of dawn touched the treetops. A large group of disciples had already gathered, their expressions a mix of anticipation and apprehension. Elder Huan stood at the forefront, overseeing the event.

"Disciples, today marks the trial of the Spirit Forest," Elder Huan announced, his voice resonating through the crowd. "This is a test of your strength, agility, and cunning. Only those who prove themselves will earn a place in the inner faction."

He gestured to the forest beyond. "Your objective is simple: find a spirit stone and return here within the hour. Each stone is marked with the sect's symbol, and they are hidden throughout the forest. Beware of the creatures that dwell within, and remember—only the strongest will succeed."

Wei Zhen stepped forward, his eyes locking onto Xiang Chen's. "Let's see if your skills are as impressive as everyone says."

Xiang Chen nodded, unfazed by the challenge. "I'll see you at the finish line."

As the trial began, the disciples surged forward, disappearing into the depths of the forest. Xiang Chen moved swiftly, his senses heightened as he navigated through the dense trees. The air was thick with the scent of pine and moss, and the sound of rustling leaves filled his ears.

He moved carefully, keeping his energy controlled and his steps light. He knew that beyond finding a spirit stone, he had to remain vigilant against both creatures and other disciples who might see him as a competitor.

Suddenly, he heard the low growl of a beast nearby. Xiang Chen crouched behind a tree, his eyes scanning the surroundings. A large, shadowy figure emerged—a Blackfur Panther, its eyes glowing with a predatory glint.

Xiang Chen remained still, recalling his training. He had learned to control his energy to avoid detection, and now he applied that knowledge, masking his presence and aura. The panther sniffed the air but, unable to sense his energy, lost interest and moved on.

"That was close," Xiang Chen muttered, moving forward once the beast was out of sight.

After navigating further, he finally spotted a faint glow amidst a cluster of rocks—a spirit stone. He approached cautiously, scanning the area for any traps or other competitors. As he reached for the stone, he heard footsteps approaching.

Wei Zhen appeared, his eyes fixed on the spirit stone. "Looks like we found the same one."

Xiang Chen knew a confrontation was inevitable. "I won't back down. I need this stone."

Wei Zhen smirked, summoning energy into his hands. "Then you'll have to take it from me."

The two locked eyes, energy crackling in the air as they prepared to face off.
