The invitation to the royal ball, sent directly by the King himself, was a summons Jacob could not ignore—no matter how much he despised dressing up.
Jacob glanced down at his dark suit and noticed that It fit well. He tugged at his collar absentmindedly before knocking again. "Elara," he said more firmly, "you can't stay in there forever. Even Angela and Lily are coming along. Why wouldn't I want you to join me?"
Elara's voice was muffled. "Because mother is the most beautiful woman in the world, and Lily is adorable enough to charm anyone. Meanwhile, I'll just look... plain and awkward."
Jacob sighed deeply, raking a hand through his hair. "For the last time, Elara, open the door. I'm not having this conversation through a plank of wood."
There was a long pause. Then, with a soft creak, the door finally opened.
