Chapter 29 - Chapter 28: A Journey to the Outskirts

Two weeks after the council meeting, Aelric decided to visit some of the villages that had suffered most under the Shadow King. He wanted to see the damage for himself and speak with the people. Lyra and Seraphina joined him, along with a small group of soldiers for protection.

The journey took them through rolling hills and quiet forests. The land, once dark and lifeless, was beginning to recover. Grass grew green again, and flowers dotted the roadside. But as they neared the villages, the scars of the past became clear burned homes, abandoned fields, and broken bridges.

When they arrived at the first village, people gathered hesitantly, their faces a mix of curiosity and fear. Aelric dismounted his horse and approached an older woman who seemed to be the village leader.

"I'm Aelric," he said gently. "I've come to see how we can help."

The woman's eyes widened. "The Lost Heir," she whispered. Then, louder, she said, "You're real."

Aelric smiled. "I am. And I want to hear your story."

The villagers slowly warmed to him, sharing tales of what they had endured. Many had lost loved ones, and others were struggling to rebuild their homes and farms. Aelric listened to each story, his heart aching for their pain. But he also felt inspired by their resilience.

"We'll send supplies," he promised. "Tools, food, and people to help rebuild. You won't face this alone."

By the time they left, the villagers seemed lighter, their hope rekindled. Aelric felt a deep sense of purpose. This was what being a leader meant being there for his people.
