"Li Xin, come out and keep me company," Zuo Qinghuan called Li Xin.
"Perfect, I was just about to look for you. I get off work at 8:30 tonight, meet me at our usual spot at 9," Li Xin also wanted to hang out with Zuo Qinghuan.
"It's been so long since I've come to a bar for a drink," Zuo Qinghuan sighed softly.
"Why is that?" Li Xin raised an eyebrow.
"Qin Wanshu wants a divorce," Zuo Qinghuan said after taking a sip of her drink.
"I didn't expect Qin Wanshu to have such resolve," Li Xin said, surprised. Qin Wanshu indeed seemed different from those high-society women.
"I never thought she'd be willing to divorce for such feelings. Do you think I'm worth her doing this?" Zuo Qinghuan asked Li Xin, bewildered.
"I don't think it matters. If she thinks you're worth it, then you are. Don't worry, Qin Wanshu isn't the type to act impulsively on fleeting passion. If she's doing this, it must be well thought out," Li Xin believed Zuo Qinghuan was overthinking.
"Actually, when I first approached her, my intentions weren't pure…" But things later got out of control. If it hadn't been for ulterior motives, Zuo Qinghuan didn't think she would have dared to approach Qin Wanshu. But Qin Wanshu was undeniably a woman who was easy to fall for.
"And now?" Li Xin raised an eyebrow. The beginning wasn't important; what mattered was now.
"I feel like I've really fallen in love with her," Zuo Qinghuan admitted. Facing Qin Wanshu made her feel like a lovestruck girl experiencing her first crush, completely unlike herself.
"Then that's fine. Don't think too much about the rest. Yan Ruozhe promised that if I successfully treat Qian Shaowen, she'd also divorce. You've got real skills, getting Qin Wanshu to divorce for you voluntarily. Meanwhile, I have to rely on a conditional exchange to get her to agree. But don't you think it's a coincidence? We're both mistresses who are about to be legitimized. It seems our fates are quite similar…" Li Xin said with a flirtatious smile, her charm fully on display.
"Are you confident about Qian Shaowen's surgery?" Zuo Qinghuan asked, worried about Li Xin, who hadn't been back as a top doctor for long.
"I can only succeed. Failure is not an option. This is the last turning point between us. If I fail, we'll truly just be strangers," Li Xin said calmly.
"Don't put too much pressure on yourself," Zuo Qinghuan patted Li Xin's shoulder gently.
"Of course not. I'm still waiting for Yan Ruozhe to serve me in bed. I've served her for so long; it's about time she pays me back…" Li Xin joked frivolously.
"What's Yan Ruozhe like in bed?" Zuo Qinghuan was curious about the behavior of the prim and proper Yan Ruozhe in such a setting.
"And what's Qin Wanshu like in bed?" Li Xin was even more curious about Qin Wanshu's performance.
"We've only progressed to hugging and kissing. I find myself very satisfied with the status quo," Zuo Qinghuan confessed.
"You haven't even slept with her, and she's willing to divorce for you? Such a good woman is truly a rare gem," Li Xin said enviously.
"Women are emotional creatures. Being moved is more important than that thing," Zuo Qinghuan said something unusually serious.
Li Xin thought about it and found some truth in it. The problem was, despite all her efforts, Yan Ruozhe had never seemed moved. She only occasionally responded out of a fleeting mood, which left Li Xin feeling defeated.
"How did you move her?" Li Xin wanted to learn from Zuo Qinghuan.
"She's moved me more often…" Zuo Qinghuan thought for a moment and replied.
It turned out Zuo Qinghuan was naturally an enticing receiver. It was so unfair—Li Xin thought she was also an enticing receiver but couldn't seem to succeed. She was filled with envy, jealousy, and resentment toward Zuo Qinghuan.
"Zuo Qinghuan, tell me, what's wrong with me that Yan Ruozhe doesn't like me?" Li Xin said indignantly.
"I think you should tone down your flirtatious charm and present yourself as a virtuous wife, or at least a professional woman. Maybe then she'd see you differently," Zuo Qinghuan said seriously after sizing up Li Xin. Her flirtatious demeanor, constantly attracting attention, was something serious women like Yan Ruozhe would likely dislike.
"Really?" Li Xin asked uncertainly.
Zuo Qinghuan nodded.
"By the way, how does one act like a virtuous wife?" Li Xin asked, clearly at a loss, unaware of her potential to be one.
"Uh…" Zuo Qinghuan was momentarily speechless. Other than her appearance, Li Xin was already quite virtuous.
"Let me go shopping with you later to buy some clothes that a virtuous wife or professional woman would wear. Put away these thigh-revealing and cleavage-showing outfits for now," Zuo Qinghuan suggested after scrutinizing Li Xin. She was curious to see Li Xin in proper attire.
"You often cook and make soups for Yan Ruozhe, but has she ever seen you cooking?" Zuo Qinghuan asked.
Li Xin shook her head. She believed that being in the kitchen wasn't aesthetically pleasing and would never let Yan Ruozhe see her there.
"Does that matter?" Li Xin countered.
"Of course! If you don't let her see you doing it personally, she might think you bought the food instead of making it with love. Seeing it makes all the difference," Zuo Qinghuan explained. Qin Wanshu found this particularly touching; she often offered to help, showing how much she cared.
"So that's how it is," Li Xin realized. No wonder Yan Ruozhe never seemed to care about her cooking, even though others praised it.
"And another thing, Yan Ruozhe seems to be a diligent, disciplined person who doesn't know how to treat herself well. She's likely to disdain superficial women who only shop and do facials. So, when you splurge, don't do it in front of her," Zuo Qinghuan advised, taking a shot in the dark but hitting the mark.
"I dress beautifully to get her attention! And many of the clothes I buy aren't even for myself; they're for her. She's so gorgeous but insists on dressing so conservatively…" Li Xin explained weakly. She remembered Yan Ruozhe accompanying her to shop once, looking very impatient. She had thought it was due to other concerns, but perhaps Yan Ruozhe had indeed seen her as shallow. Plus, Yan Ruozhe never wore the clothes she bought for her, even though Li Xin thought they would look amazing on her.
"Li Xin, do you know anything about Yan Ruozhe is past?" Zuo Qinghuan asked.
"She's never told me," Li Xin shook her head. Yan Ruozhe would never discuss such things with her. If she did, their relationship wouldn't be what it was now.
"Every woman has a vulnerable side, and her past might be hers. If you can touch that part of her, she might start relying on you," Zuo Qinghuan said thoughtfully. She recalled how her love for Qin Wanshu deepened after showing her most vulnerable side and receiving unconditional acceptance.
Li Xin, who grew up in a happy family, couldn't relate to the struggles of someone like Zuo Qinghuan or Yan Ruozhe, who had no family to lean on. This angle didn't occur to her, and she didn't even know that Yan Ruozhe was an orphan.
Thinking about it, Li Xin realized Zuo Qinghuan's point. She knew nothing about Yan Ruozhe is past, not even why she was willing to make such sacrifices for Qian Shaowen. These were things she wanted to know but couldn't get Yan Ruozhe to share.
