Chapter 30 - Ch 30: A Trader’s Path

With the echoes of Velina's Grand Tourney fading into memory, Kalem stepped onto a new path. His dreams of crafting legendary weapons and mastering combat had not wavered, but his defeat at the hands of Dreyfus had illuminated a glaring weakness: his ignorance of battle aura. Determined to learn and grow, Kalem embraced a nomadic life, blending in as a wandering trader.

His massive backpack was more than a burden—it was his livelihood, crammed with an assortment of goods: sturdy tools, simple trinkets, and spare supplies. Trading offered him a way to fund his travels and stay inconspicuous while he pursued his secret mission. Every coin earned, every bartered item, and every new face offered the possibility of another step forward on his journey.

Kalem quickly learned that trading was an art form in itself. His first few attempts were met with skepticism from wary villagers, but he soon developed a knack for negotiation. Whether it was bartering his handmade utensils for fresh bread or exchanging a sharpened axe for a warm bed, Kalem adapted with each encounter.

He began to notice patterns in human behavior—the way a merchant's eyes lingered on a shiny trinket or how a farmer's fingers twitched at the mention of a tool they needed. Using his observations, Kalem honed his persuasive skills, becoming a competent trader. Still, trading was not his true focus.

Each night, by the light of his campfire, Kalem poured over his journal. Its pages brimmed with hastily written notes, sketches of aura-infused warriors, and diagrams of mana flow. He divided his findings into categories: Mana Control, Physical Conditioning, and Mental Focus. It was a self-made curriculum, born from scattered knowledge and his sheer determination.

Kalem's wandering took him through villages nestled in misty valleys, towns bustling with market day crowds, and desolate stretches of wilderness where his only company was the sound of his boots on the dirt path. Each location offered its own lessons and challenges.

In a small mountain hamlet, Kalem came across an elderly blacksmith struggling to repair a broken plow. Kalem offered his help, forging a stronger replacement blade from scrap metal. The blacksmith, impressed by his ingenuity, shared a story of warriors who once used aura to move mountains. Though exaggerated, the tale hinted at the possibilities of what he sought to achieve.

In another village, Kalem witnessed a sparring match between two local fighters. One, a younger man brimming with energy, moved with raw power but lacked precision. The other, an older warrior, displayed a faint glow around his strikes, each one perfectly timed and devastatingly effective. The older man's aura manipulation was clear, and though Kalem dared not ask directly, he etched the scene into his memory.

Not all of Kalem's encounters were peaceful. One moonless night, while camped along a quiet forest trail, Kalem was awakened by the sound of snapping twigs. Emerging from the shadows were three armed bandits, their weapons glinting menacingly in the firelight.

"Hand over the goods, boy," the leader growled, his voice as sharp as the dagger in his hand.

Kalem, though outnumbered, refused to surrender. He grabbed a short sword from his pack and steadied his breathing. His mind raced as he analyzed the terrain—a small clearing with uneven ground, perfect for creating obstacles.

The fight was brief but brutal. Kalem used the environment to his advantage, forcing the bandits to stumble on hidden roots and uneven ground. His adaptive combat style, a hallmark of his training, allowed him to fend them off. When the dust settled, two bandits lay groaning on the ground, while the third had fled into the woods.

Exhausted but victorious, Kalem sank to his knees by the fire. The fight had been a harsh reminder of his vulnerabilities. Aura, he realized, could have turned the tide in his favor far sooner.

A week later, Kalem arrived in a lakeside village known for its serene beauty. It was here that he met Elrin, a retired warrior with a mysterious air. The old man, now a humble fisherman, radiated an aura of calm strength. Intrigued, Kalem struck up a conversation, steering it toward the topic of battle aura.

Elrin's words were enigmatic but profound:

"Aura is not just power—it's the harmony of body, mind, and mana. Without balance, it's like trying to wield a sword without a handle."

Though Elrin refused to teach him directly, Kalem took the advice to heart. He began practicing balance exercises and breath control techniques, simple yet effective ways to attune his body and mind. Standing on one foot for hours, carrying uneven loads, and meditating by the fire became part of his nightly routine.

By the time Kalem reached a bustling crossroads town, he had begun experimenting with mana manipulation. Sitting cross-legged by his campfire, he would focus on the faint hum of energy within him, willing it to flow through his limbs. Most attempts ended in frustration, but there were moments when he felt a spark—a flicker of control that hinted at the potential within him.

In the town, Kalem joined a sparring group to test his progress. Though far from mastering aura, his growing understanding of mana flow gave him an edge. In one match, he surprised an opponent by channeling a burst of speed to disarm them, a move that earned him cheers from the crowd.

One fateful evening, while browsing a traveling merchant's wares, Kalem overheard a group of miners discussing the kingdom of Warsaw. Hidden deep within the Asterisk Valley, Warsaw was famed for its rich deposits of rare minerals and enchanted ores. To Kalem, it seemed like the perfect destination. Mining would provide physical training, a steady income, and access to knowledge about rare materials—knowledge he could use to forge even greater weapons.

Packing his belongings and tightening the straps of his backpack, Kalem set his sights on Warsaw. As he walked along the winding path toward the valley, he felt a surge of determination. The journey ahead would be long and grueling, but Kalem welcomed the challenge.

He was no longer just a trader or a defeated warrior. He was a student of the unknown, forging a new path toward mastery. Each step brought him closer to his goal—mastering battle aura and becoming the craftsman and fighter he was destined to be.
