Kalem's footsteps echoed down the cold, damp tunnel as he descended into the bowels of the mountain. The air grew colder, more stagnant with each step. His torch flickered wildly in the draft, casting erratic shadows on the rough stone walls. His mind buzzed with excitement and anxiety, unsure of what to expect as he ventured deeper.
The entrance had been difficult enough to unlock, its magic fierce and unyielding. But that was only a barrier. What lay beyond the seal was still a mystery. His pulse quickened as the passageway narrowed, forcing him to duck beneath jagged rocks.
Every instinct in Kalem's body screamed to turn back, but he pressed on, determined to uncover whatever secrets the mountain held. The ancient stories told of vast mines, of rare metals and forgotten relics. If even half of those tales were true, the risk would be worth it. And if there were clues to his parents' fate—no, *when* there were clues—he had to find them.
The tunnel opened into a wider chamber, its walls lined with strange, glowing crystals embedded deep in the stone. Their dim light illuminated the space with an eerie blue glow, making Kalem's torch seem weak in comparison. He cautiously approached the center of the cavern, his eyes scanning the shadows for any sign of danger.
Something wasn't right.
The silence was too thick, too oppressive. The air itself felt wrong—heavy, like something unseen was watching him. Kalem's heart thudded in his chest. He tightened his grip on his dagger, his senses on high alert.
Suddenly, a sound broke the silence—a faint scraping, like claws on stone. Kalem froze, his breath catching in his throat. The noise echoed through the chamber, coming from the darkness beyond the reach of the crystals' light.
"Who's there?" Kalem called, his voice trembling slightly as it bounced off the walls.
No answer. Only the silence, and then the scraping again, closer this time.
Panic gripped him. His eyes darted around the cavern, searching for the source of the sound. But the shadows played tricks on his vision, twisting and distorting in the flickering torchlight. His skin prickled as the temperature dropped further, the cold air biting at his face.
And then he saw it—a flash of movement in the corner of his eye. Something large, something fast. He spun around, his heart racing, but whatever it was had already melted back into the darkness.
Kalem backed away slowly, his pulse pounding in his ears. His fingers tightened around the hilt of his dagger, though he knew it would be little help against whatever lurked in the shadows. The creature—whatever it was—was toying with him. Waiting.
Another scrape. Closer still. This time, he caught a glimpse—pale eyes gleaming in the darkness, a shape skittering along the walls like a massive spider. His blood ran cold.
He had to get out.
Kalem turned and ran, his boots pounding against the stone floor as he sprinted toward the tunnel he had come from. The sound of claws scraped behind him, echoing in his ears, and the creature's guttural growl sent shivers down his spine. It was gaining on him.
Panic surged through his veins. The tunnel walls seemed to close in around him, the jagged rocks snagging at his clothes as he dashed through the narrow passage. His torch flickered wildly, casting long, distorted shadows that made it hard to see.
Behind him, the creature let out a low, menacing hiss, and Kalem's heart leapt into his throat. He pushed his body harder, his legs burning with the effort. But the sound of claws grew louder, closer, until he could almost feel the hot breath of the beast at his back.
Suddenly, the ground beneath his feet gave way.
Kalem cried out as he tumbled forward, his body crashing against the sharp rocks below. His torch flew from his hand, clattering to the ground and snuffing out in an instant. The world plunged into darkness.
He gasped for breath, pain shooting through his limbs as he struggled to sit up. His head spun, and the coppery taste of blood filled his mouth. He had fallen into some kind of pit, its walls too steep to climb in the dark. His dagger was gone, lost in the fall.
And above him, the sound of scraping claws drew closer.
Kalem's heart pounded in his chest as he fumbled in the darkness, his fingers searching desperately for a weapon—anything to defend himself. But all he found were loose stones and dirt.
A low growl rumbled from the tunnel above, and Kalem's breath hitched in his throat. He could see the faint gleam of eyes peering down at him from the edge of the pit, the creature's pale gaze locking onto his.
This was it. He was trapped, helpless. His thoughts raced, panic overwhelming him as the beast began to descend into the pit, its massive form skittering down the walls with unnatural speed.
But just as it closed in, something strange happened.
The ground beneath Kalem's feet shifted, the very stone trembling as if in response to his fear. A faint glow began to emanate from the walls, and the crystals embedded in the rock pulsed with a dim light. Kalem's hand brushed against something smooth and cold—one of the crystals, larger than the others, half-buried in the dirt.
Without thinking, Kalem gripped the crystal and pulled it free from the ground.
A burst of energy surged through him, and the air around him crackled with magic. The creature let out a screech, recoiling as the light intensified, filling the pit with a blinding brilliance. Kalem's eyes burned from the brightness, but he held tight to the crystal, its power thrumming in his veins.
The beast hissed again, retreating into the shadows as the light drove it back. Kalem could hear it skittering up the walls, its claws scrambling for purchase as it fled into the darkness above.
And then, just as quickly as it had begun, the light faded.
Kalem was left alone in the pit, panting and shaking, the crystal still clutched in his hand. His body ached, and his mind swirled with confusion. What had just happened? The crystal had... saved him, somehow. But how?
He glanced up at the tunnel above, his heart still racing. The creature was gone—for now—but he had no doubt it would return. And he wasn't about to wait around for that to happen.
Summoning the last of his strength, Kalem scrambled to his feet, using the glowing crystal to guide him as he searched for a way out of the pit. His body ached, and his limbs felt weak, but he forced himself to move.
There, near the far wall, a narrow crack in the stone. It was small, but just wide enough for him to squeeze through. Kalem wasted no time, wedging himself into the crack and pushing forward, the rough stone scraping against his skin.
After what felt like an eternity, Kalem emerged into a wider tunnel. The air was still cold, but the faint glow of the crystals lit the way forward. His breath came in ragged gasps as he staggered down the passage, his heart pounding in his chest.
He was alive, but only barely.
As he stumbled through the darkness, clutching the glowing crystal tightly in his hand, Kalem couldn't help but wonder what other dangers lay ahead—and whether he was truly ready to face them.
