"GET IN LINE, MAGGOTS!"
A booming voice echoed across the stadium, shaking me from my thoughts. I turned toward the far end of the field and spotted a hulking, muscular man with a presence so commanding it left no room for doubt—he had to be an instructor.
"Hey, Selena!" I called out, trying to get her attention.
She ignored me. Again.
Without even sparing me a glance, she walked away, her pace brisk and her posture tense. This had been her attitude ever since I arrived at the stadium.
After my... eventful visit to the vice principal's office—where I was reassigned to a different room and handed uniforms—I rushed to class, only to realize I'd already missed most of my lessons. So, I decided to skip straight to the stadium for combat class.
That's when I saw Selena.
She was sitting alone in a secluded corner, her arms crossed, looking as though the entire world had wronged her. I approached her, to explain why I didn't arrive as planed, but the moment I got close, she stood up and walked off as if I didn't exist.
What the hell?
Is she mad at me for not meeting up with her earlier? I tried to explain, didn't I? But she wouldn't even give me a chance.
...Wait.
Why do I feel like the tables have turned? Suddenly, I'm the one chasing her.
Sigh.
'Don't worry, you fairy bitch… I'll make sure you pay for all the stress you've caused me,' I thought bitterly.
Somehow, the Fairy bitch had found me. And not just that—she'd wrecked my room while trying to kill me in my sleep.
'I hate you… I hope you die a painful death.'
Her voice echoed in my mind, dripping with venom. But I brushed it off.
She was going to get what was coming to her.
It turned out she was bound to the Trinket of Destiny. She wasn't just protecting it—she was enslaved to it.
That raised some interesting questions. Why hadn't this happened in the novel? Was it because the story mentioned she'd drained her essence trying to protect it and died? I wasn't sure.
My initial reaction was fury. I wanted to kill her for what she'd done to me. But when I confronted her, I found her surprisingly... obedient.
When I asked her what happened, she answered.
When I asked why, she told me.
Even when I demanded to know why she wrecked my room while leaving me unharmed, she explained.
Apparently, as her master, she couldn't harm me directly.
So now she was stuck, invisibly hovering around me with a permanent look of disgust etched on her face. Oddly, that expression calmed my anger just a bit.
But make no mistake—she was going to pay.
"I AM MODRICK ELSINAR!" the bellowing voice snapped me out of my thoughts. The massive man was addressing the entire class now, his voice a mix of thunder and venom. "I WILL BE YOUR COMBAT CLASS INSTRUCTOR UNTIL THE GRADING EXAMS BEGIN! LET ME MAKE ONE THING CLEAR! I DON'T KNOW HOW TO CONTROL MYSELF! THERE HAVE BEEN TIMES WHEN I BEAT STUDENTS HALF-DEAD IN THE NAME OF DISCIPLINE. RULE NUMBER ONE: DON'T GIVE ME A REASON TO DISCIPLINE YOU!"
His words blended into a distant hum as my thoughts wandered again.
What's your name? I asked telepathically, turning slightly to glance at the fairy floating beside me.
"Nelia," she spat, her teeth clenched.
"So, Nelia... why was the Fairy race wiped out?"
Her body stiffened at the question. Even her angry glare softened for a moment, revealing a glimmer of sadness.
"Please... can we not talk about that now?" she pleaded, her tone almost fragile.
It was clear she didn't want to remember.
"Fine," I relented. "Then tell me about the Trinket. Why were you made a slave to it?"
"I didn't have a choice," she admitted. "It was to fulfill the prophecy."
"What prophecy?"
"I don't know the whole thing. The Fairies only ever discovered fragments. It was said that when the world is on the brink of destruction, a hero would rise... but also a hero of darkness."
"And that's it?"
"That's all we knew. The Fairy Queen never revealed more."
Interesting.
The novel never mentioned a prophecy. But if this was true, then Lucas was probably the hero.
Still, something didn't sit right with me.
