I kept the fire burning, ensuring there was nothing but sand surrounding it to prevent any chance of it igniting something else. I crawled into my popup tent, settled into my sleeping bag on the foldout cot, and drifted off to sleep. This time, I felt warm and secure, bolstered by the powerful scroll I had used, and my belly was full. I dozed on and off, taking breaks to eat, stoke the fire, and catch up on the rest my body craved. Before I realized it, a week had flown by, and I was ready to hit the road once more.
Bane had put the runes inside me while I was asleep, so I wasn't aware of what it felt like but he said that from now on Paine wouldn't be able to drink blood from me directly without my permission, which I had no intention of ever giving.
