Synopsis
Ava found herself in a loveless marriage for three years. Her husband's family called her all sorts of names because she could not bear a child. On Christmas Day, her mother-in-law decides to make her feel the pain of not having a child. Ava couldn't take it any longer; she faced her husband and called him impotent. Everyone was surprised at Ava's declaration because Alex has been behaving like a psycho who hates women, which is why Ava was arranged for him as a wife. His father commanded him to go down on his wife or else lose the company he had suffered for. Alex felt the humiliation his wife subjected him to; he went in and went down on her for the first time and forced a contraceptive pill down her throat. Ava couldn't bear it any longer and filed for divorce. 10 months later, Alex received a Christmas gift in advance. He opened the gift and found a dying baby. He clenched his fist and muttered, "Ava, you will suffer for ever making my child like this."

Chapter 1 - Chapter 1

Today was Christmas Day, a day when everyone was supposed to be happy, irrespective of the problems they were facing. But it was not a happy day for Ava Langford.

The merry Christmas song from the tree she had brought home jolted her awake. It was the first time her in-laws would be spending the holiday at her house after three years since she got married to Alex. The cold and cruel last heir of the Langford family.

Last Christmas, they made it clear that they expected the cry of a baby to welcome them this year. If not, she would be replaced.

She watched the ring on her finger, lost in thought. How happy today would have been if her husband had allowed her to be his wife, the woman he longed for. Instead, she was just a decoration in his house. Despite her efforts to win him over, Alex remained cold and distant from her.

She retreated to the kitchen. Cooking was her escape from the tension, a task she loved. She had planned a feast that would hopefully distract her in-laws from their usual rants and accusations.

Hearing her husband's footsteps, she quickly adjusted her top, flaunting her chest. After all, no workers were at home; they had all gone to spend Christmas with their families.

She prayed silently that Alex would look at her when he appeared in the kitchen for his usual glass of water.

As predicted, he walked in and got water from the fridge. He wanted to walk back, leaving Ava unnoticed.

"Merry Christmas, Alex," she murmured.

He spun, and their eyes met, and Alex transferred his aggression to the water, gulping it down quickly, and clenched his fist on the bottle, making it wrinkled. He looked at her disdainfully before responding sharply, "Stop trying, Ava. It can never be us! No matter how hard you try, I can never love you, kiss you, or take you to bed. So what a waste of time trying!" He shrugged.

Ava stood numb, his words piercing her heart like a dagger. She had heard the same words for the past three years of their marriage. Tears welled up in her eyes. What hadn't she done to seduce him? She had walked without clothes in the house to make him look at her, but nothing happened. She cooked food that could increase libido, yet he never looked at her, even for relief. He would rather go to his library to study. This left many questions in Ava's mind. She concluded that Alex was either not man enough or perhaps he was gay. Or probably hated her because of the scar on her face.

His voice jolted Ava out of her reverie, and she continued her cooking.

A few moments later, the doorbell rang, signalling the arrival of her in-laws. Ava's heart clenched as she walked to receive them, a practiced smile on her face.

Her mother-in-law, Vivian, swept in first, her eyes scanning the room critically. She was followed by her father-in-law, Robert, and her sister-in-law, Claire, who held her husband's hand and their child. Alex's elder brother, Austin, wasn't left out, as was a strange lady whose eyes rake Alex from head to toe before sending Ava a condescending look.

"Merry Christmas!" Ava greeted them, trying to infuse her voice with cheerfulness.

"Merry Christmas, dear," Vivian replied, her tone devoid of warmth. "Merry Christmas, Alex. I hope we're not too early."

Ava didn't wait for Alex to respond; she was looking for a possible way to stop her mother-in-law from her usual nagging, and she responded, "Not at all," ushering them into the dining room.

"Breakfast is ready."

Vivian snorted, "We aren't hungry like your parents, Ava. I expected to see you busy taking care of a child rather than having all the time in the world to welcome us. Your husband should have done the welcoming while you took care of your child," she spat venomously.

Ava clenched her fists beside her, trembling. It wasn't her fault that she hadn't given birth. How could she, when her husband of three years had never even stepped into her room, let alone consummated their marriage? She couldn't produce a child alone. Robert noticed her reddened eyes. He was the only one who liked Ava in the family, and he instantly cautioned his wife.

"Vivian, today is Christmas," he said, shooting her a dead glare, and she shrugged.

After the welcome and greeting, they sat down to eat.

Vivian picked up a piece of French toast, examining it as if it might bite her.

"This is... different," she remarked, finally taking a bite. "I suppose it's passable."

Ava's stomach churned, and she bit her lip. The food she made was extremely good, but there was nothing she could do to please Vivian.

She looked at Alex, hoping to find solace in his eyes, but quickly averted his gaze.

Vivian wasn't the one to taunt her about having a child, but her sister-in-law, who got married a year after she got married to Alex,.

"So, Ava," Claire said, her voice dripping with false concern as she pressed the back of the child sitting beside her. "Have you and Alex considered seeing a specialist? It's been quite some time, hasn't it?"

Ava felt her face flush. This was a conversation she dreaded. "We're working on it, Claire," she replied, keeping her tone neutral.

Claire sniffed, clearly unimpressed. "Well, I hope you sort it out soon. It's important for the family, you know."

Vivian scoffed, "It must be so frustrating, trying and trying with no results."

"Imagine pouring water into a sieve," she sneered.

Robert dropped the spoon on the table. "That's enough," he said firmly. "We're here to celebrate Christmas; whatever it is, let's give it to them today."

"Fine! Today is Christmas, but you can't stop me from talking to my son; she has had many days," she retorted.

Vivian turned to Alex. "Alex, what have you been doing about this childless issue?"

Alex stared a dead glance at Ava. "I'm trying," he responded, clenching his fist.

Vivian snorted. "I know you are trying, dear son. But what would you do when the effort is coming only from you? Ava is such a waste. She is unyielding land; nothing can ever grow from her. How I wish Cecilia wasn't abroad when your father mandated you to get married; you wouldn't have married in this ugly desert," she spat.

Vivian's words pierced through her heart like a dagger. Tears she had fought began to stream down her eyes. Ava couldn't stay silent any longer; she could not be the only one taking blame for their childlessness.

"Alex," she called between her sobs.

"What! Don't drag me into your mess." He responded coldly.

"My mess!" a bitter smile curled from the corner of her lips. She dropped the fork and faced Vivian.

"What! You heard him right; he said you should not drag him to unproductiveness; he is a capable man," Vivian sneered.

Ava scoffed and retorted, "How sure are you that I'm unyielding land? How do you know he is trying? How many women has he impregnated?" Tears continued to stream down her eyes, and her face was plastered with a bitter smile.

The room fell silent, her boldness shocking everyone. Ava's eyes flashed with defiance. "Do you even know whether Alex is man enough? What if your son is damn impotent?!" she yelled, shivering.

Vivian gasped, struggling to breathe, and Claire's eyes widened. Robert leaned back in his chair, and the air in the house thickened. Everyone was surprised at Ava's accusation.

Food forces were out of Alex's mouth, and he stood up abruptly, knocking his chair over. "Enough!" he shouted.

His face was a mask of rage and frustration; he knew if he stayed a minute with them, there would be trouble with his father. "This conversation is over."

He wanted to take his leave. Robert's voice stopped him. "You are the first impotent person I have ever seen in my family."

Alex's eyes widened in horror; he couldn't believe that his father believed what Ava just said.

"We all know Ava is lying to cover herself up; I am a man!" He growled.

"How do you clear up the allegations she made against you? Proof that you are a man now or you will lose the company you have laboured for."

"I am not going to prove anything to anyone." He groaned. His actions sent a shiver down the spines of everyone, but Austin, his brother, was unfazed.

"Everyone knows that I am not impotent like Alex; I have impregnated three women; my irresponsibleness will earn me the dying company my brother saved," Austin taunted.
