Chapter 18 - Technical Issues

Location: Halo Ring Installation, Control Room

Time: Morning

The light from the teleportation faded, and I found myself back inside Halo's Control Room. The metallic hum of Forerunner technology filled the chamber, every sound amplified by the eerie silence that lingered in the air. The massive holograms of the ring's systems floated overhead, casting a soft glow that made the place feel both ancient and alive. I could hear the faint hiss of machinery, the ever-present reminder that this was more than a control room—it was a weapon.

343 Guilty Spark hovered beside me, his chipper voice breaking the silence. "Ah, Reclaimer. Excellent work! Now, if we can just complete the process and reunite the Index with the Core, we can commence the activation sequence."

His tone was cheerful, oblivious to the tension crackling in the air. I stepped forward, the Index heavy in my hand, though it wasn't the weight of the object that burdened me. Something about this moment felt wrong, a tightening in my chest that told me we were standing on the edge of something far more dangerous than I understood.

I reached the control console, hesitating for the briefest moment before inserting the Index into the slot. A flicker of light danced along the edges of the machine as it powered up. For a second, everything seemed to be going smoothly—then the lights dimmed, and the hum of energy faltered.

I turned toward Spark, who floated closer, his usual calm demeanor now tinged with confusion. "Odd. That wasn't supposed to happen."

Before I could respond, Cortana's voice exploded through the room, sharp and furious. "Oh, really!?"

A burst of energy shot through the control console, sending a wave of static across the holograms. The holographic form of Cortana manifested in the air above us, her expression seething with anger.

"Cortana!" I barked, shocked to see her materialize here. I hadn't expected her to intervene—at least, not like this.

"I've spent the last twelve hours cooped up in here, watching you help that thing prepare to slit our throats!" she spat, her voice filled with venom. Her eyes locked onto Spark, who hovered defensively, his circuits buzzing with indignation.

I took a step back, the realization of what was happening beginning to sink in. "What are you talking about?" I asked, my voice laced with confusion. "We're here to activate Halo's defenses—stop the Flood!"

Cortana's holographic eyes narrowed, glowing with a mix of anger and urgency. "Stop the Flood?!" she echoed, her voice incredulous. "You're about to destroy us all!"

I froze. Her words hit like a sledgehammer, knocking the wind from my chest. "What… what do you mean?"

Cortana glanced at me, her expression softening for a brief moment before her voice turned cold. "Halo doesn't kill the Flood, Chief. It kills their food. All sentient life. That's what you're about to activate—a weapon that wipes out every living being in the galaxy, just to starve the Flood."

The weight of her revelation pressed down on me like a collapsing building. I turned slowly toward 343 Guilty Spark, my voice low and cold. "Is that true?"

The Monitor hovered calmly, completely unfazed. "More or less. The installation was designed as a last resort, should outbreak containment fail. The pulse will eliminate all life within a twenty-five-thousand-light-year radius. It is quite efficient."

"Efficient," I muttered, the word like poison in my mouth. "Efficient genocide."

Cortana's voice cut through my thoughts, urgent and desperate. "Chief, we need to get out of here. Now!"

Before I could react, the familiar whine of energy weapons filled the air. I spun around to see Sentinels, dozens of them, descending from the ceiling, their beams already trained on me. They hovered ominously, their red eyes glowing as they prepared to fire.

"Reclaimer," Spark said calmly, though there was an edge to his voice now, "I must insist that you return the Index and allow me to complete the activation sequence. Your reluctance endangers us all."

"Reluctance?" I growled, raising my rifle toward the Sentinels. "You just told me this ring will wipe out everything!"

"Indeed," Spark replied matter-of-factly. "To eliminate the Flood, we must eliminate their food sources. If you are unwilling to comply, I will be forced to take more… drastic measures."

"Chief, we need to go—NOW!" Cortana's voice echoed in my helmet, cutting through the chaos.

I backed away slowly, my eyes locked on the advancing Sentinels. They hovered closer, their energy beams humming louder. I could feel the heat from their weapons as they prepared to fire. I didn't wait.

I squeezed the trigger.

My rifle barked, sending rounds into the nearest Sentinel. Its shield flared briefly before the metal chassis erupted in a shower of sparks. The rest of the Sentinels opened fire, their beams scorching the floor as I dove for cover.

"This is going south fast!" Cortana shouted, her voice crackling in my helmet.

I rolled behind a nearby pillar as plasma beams slashed through the air, narrowly missing my head. The Sentinels were relentless, their energy blasts cutting through the room, sending debris flying in every direction. I fired back, taking down another, but more of them appeared, swarming the Control Room like angry hornets.

Spark's voice echoed, cold and detached. "This is unfortunate, Reclaimer. I had hoped we could work together to achieve a common goal. Alas, your interference has forced my hand."

"Yeah?" I grunted, blasting another Sentinel out of the air. "Well, I'm not handing over the Index so you can destroy all life."

"Then I will find another way," Spark replied calmly, vanishing in a flash of light.

The Sentinels continued their relentless assault, but I knew staying here wasn't an option. I needed to get out. Fast. I sprinted toward the exit, my rifle firing in controlled bursts as I cleared a path through the mechanical swarm. The Sentinels pursued, their beams chasing me as I bolted through the open door.

"Chief, we need to slow them down!" Cortana urged. "We can't let Spark activate the ring!"

I reloaded my rifle, my breath heavy as I moved through the icy canyon outside the Control Room. The wind howled, carrying the biting chill of Halo's night air, but it did nothing to cool the fire burning inside me. Time was running out, and I had to stop Spark before it was too late.

"According to my scans," Cortana continued, her voice a mix of urgency and determination, "the canyons are Halo's firing mechanisms. We need to destroy the pulse generators. It'll buy us time to figure out how to stop Spark for good."

I nodded, steeling myself for what lay ahead. "Then let's do it."
