Chapter 6 - Evacuation

Location: Surface of Halo

Time: 06:05 AM

The landscape blurred beneath us as Echo 419 screamed through the sky, its engines roaring against the wind, cutting through the quiet alien expanse. The Pelican's hold was cramped with marines—survivors from earlier pickups—each one gripping their weapons tightly as the tension thickened. Beneath us, the ringworld stretched on endlessly, a place that was both eerily beautiful and deeply menacing.

I kept my eyes on the horizon, watching for any signs of movement below. The Covenant weren't far behind, and with every passing minute, our chances of survival grew slimmer.

Cortana's voice came through the helmet with a sense of urgency. "Chief, I'm picking up multiple UNSC lifeboat signals in the surrounding area. Survivors, scattered across a wide radius. We don't have much time to reach them before the Covenant does."

I nodded, gripping the frame of the Pelican as we banked hard toward the first signal. Every second mattered. We had to get these marines out before the Covenant descended on them like wolves on wounded prey. The wind howled against the Pelican's hull as the sun began to rise over the ring, casting long shadows across the valleys below. Beautiful, but ominous—this place felt like it was watching us.

"Hang on tight, Chief!" Foe Hammer, Captain Carol Rawley, called from the cockpit, her Southern drawl crackling over the comms. "We've got some rough air ahead, and this isn't going to be a gentle landing."

The Pelican shuddered violently as we descended, shaking the marines inside. Despite the nerves, I trusted Foe Hammer. She had already extracted us from more dangerous situations than I could count, and her steady hand at the controls was the only thing keeping us from becoming a fiery wreck on this cursed ring.

Through the dust and smoke, I saw the first crash site. Marines huddled near a downed lifeboat, their faces weary but alert, eyes scanning the horizon for threats. The relief on their faces was palpable when they saw Echo 419 swooping in.

"Chief, Cortana!" a marine shouted over the rising winds as I leaped out of the Pelican. "We thought we were on our own!"

"Not yet," I replied, scanning the area for signs of Covenant forces. The ground was too quiet, and that only heightened my unease. "Load up. We're getting you back to Alpha Base before the Covenant figures out you're here."

The marines wasted no time, scrambling into the Pelican with a speed only desperation could fuel. I turned to the horizon, the distant mountains cloaked in a sinister fog, and the silence of the valley was shattered by the distant, unmistakable hum of Covenant dropships.

"All aboard, Chief!" Foe Hammer's voice crackled through the comms. "Next stop: Alpha Base!"

Location: Alpha Base

Time: 06:30 AM

Alpha Base loomed ahead like a fortress carved into the mesa, its steep cliffs forming a natural barrier that had been bolstered by repurposed Covenant Shade turrets. It wasn't much, but it was defensible, and right now, that's what mattered.

As Echo 419 touched down on the makeshift landing pad, the base was a flurry of activity. Marines rushed between positions, securing supplies, setting up barricades, and preparing for the inevitable Covenant assault. The air buzzed with the low hum of urgency—every soldier knew we were living on borrowed time.

I stepped off the Pelican, my boots hitting the dirt as I surveyed the scene. ODSTs moved like shadows through the chaos, their faces hidden beneath black visors, while Major Antonio Silva stood at the center of it all, barking orders to his men. He was in his element, orchestrating the defense with the cold efficiency of a seasoned veteran who knew just how close we were to losing it all.

Foe Hammer's voice came over the comms. "Chief, I'm heading back up to retrieve more survivors. We've got plenty more out there waiting for pickup, and I'm not leaving anyone behind."

"Understood," I replied, watching as the Pelican's engines roared back to life. "We'll need every marine we can get."

Silva's voice rang out over the noise of the base, commanding and firm. "Get those supplies secured! We're not letting this base fall! Everyone, double-check your positions!"

I could see it in his eyes—he knew the Covenant were coming, and when they did, it wouldn't be a light skirmish. This was going to be a fight for survival. Every second we bought to prepare counted.

Cortana's voice sounded in my helmet, calm but focused. "Chief, I've calculated the probable approach vectors for the Covenant forces. We need to strengthen our defenses along the northern ridge. If they breach that, Alpha Base will be overrun."

I gave a firm nod. "We'll be ready."

Location: UNSC Lifeboat Crash Site, Surface of Halo

Time: 07:00 AM

Echo 419 roared through the sky again, engines screaming as we raced toward the next group of survivors. The terrain blurred beneath us, a maze of canyons and cliffs that provided both cover and danger. A thick column of smoke marked the next crash site, visible from miles away—another UNSC lifeboat, broken and burning.

As we neared the crash site, I spotted movement—marines, pinned down behind the wreckage, desperately trying to hold off an advancing Covenant patrol. Their plasma fire lit up the air, the deadly glow flashing like fireworks in the morning light.

"Covenant patrol," Cortana warned. "We need to move fast."

The Pelican hadn't even fully landed when I leaped out, my assault rifle raised. The marines on the ground were barely holding the line, outgunned and outnumbered by the Grunts and Elites advancing on their position. Plasma grenades exploded around them, and the smell of burning metal and flesh filled the air.

I sprinted toward the downed marines, firing in controlled bursts as I moved. My rounds found their targets, dropping several Grunts before they could throw another grenade. The marines, seeing me, rallied—hope sparked in their eyes as they fought back with renewed vigor.

"Fall back to the Pelican!" I shouted, firing as I moved to cover their retreat. "We're getting you out of here!"

They didn't need to be told twice. The marines scrambled toward the Pelican, their boots kicking up dust as they sprinted for safety. I stayed behind, covering their retreat as the Covenant pushed forward. Elites barked orders in their guttural language, plasma rifles blazing as they fired at anything that moved.

The last marine dove into the Pelican just as I reached it, barely avoiding a plasma bolt that scorched the ground where he'd been standing. I jumped onboard, slamming the door shut behind me.

"Get us out of here, Foe Hammer!" I called, gripping the side of the troop bay as the Pelican lifted off, the engines roaring as we left the battlefield behind.

"Roger that!" Foe Hammer responded, calm and steady despite the chaos. "Hold on tight!"

Location: Alpha Base

Time: 07:25 AM

Back at Alpha Base, the scene was even more intense. The base was rapidly filling with survivors, but the more marines we brought in, the more pressure it put on our defenses. It was becoming clear that we couldn't hold this position for long without serious reinforcements. The Covenant would hit us with everything they had once they figured out where we were.

Major Silva greeted me as I stepped off the Pelican, his eyes cold and calculating. "Good work, Chief," he said, his voice gruff. "But don't get too comfortable. The Covenant are massing for a push. We won't hold this base without a fight."

"I know," I replied, meeting his gaze. "We'll be ready."

Silva nodded and turned back to his men, already planning the next phase of the defense. The marines moved like clockwork, setting up barricades, hauling ammunition, and preparing for the inevitable storm. Every face I saw was hardened with determination, but I could see the cracks—the exhaustion, the fear. We were holding it together, but barely.

Cortana's voice filled my helmet once more. "Chief, I've detected increased Covenant activity in the area. They're regrouping, and it won't be long before they launch a full assault."

I took a deep breath, surveying the base one last time. This was just the beginning. We had held out so far, but the real fight was still ahead. Halo was a beautiful, deadly trap, and we were stuck right in the middle of it.

"We need to bolster the defenses," Cortana continued. "The Covenant will come at us hard, and we'll need every advantage we can get."

I nodded. The Covenant were coming, and we had no choice but to meet them head-on.
