Aiden's glare could melt steel, and Jerome felt the weight of his fury bearing down on her. She stood her ground, her pulse racing in her ears, but her heart remained resolute. Ian was at her side, unflinching, his body tense, ready to spring into action.
The pack watched in silence, hanging on every breath as the tension reached its boiling point. Aiden's nostrils flared, his chest heaving with barely contained rage. For a long moment, it seemed as if he would strike—but then, with a disgusted sneer, he turned his back on them.
"This isn't over," Aiden spat over his shoulder. His voice dripped with venom, the promise of future confrontation hanging in the air like a thick fog. "You'll regret challenging me, both of you."
With that, Aiden stormed off into the woods, the sound of his heavy footfalls fading into the distance. The pack exhaled collectively, the tension momentarily broken.
Jerome's shoulders sagged with relief, but her heart was still pounding, adrenaline making her feel light-headed. Ian, sensing her unease, wrapped a protective arm around her waist, pulling her close.
"You were incredible," he whispered, his voice filled with pride. "You stood up to him without hesitation."
Jerome leaned into his embrace, grateful for his warmth and steady presence. "I couldn't let him keep bullying everyone. It's not right."
Ian nodded, his gaze drifting toward the crowd of wolves that had gathered. "You've earned their respect, Jerome. More than you know."
The pack was still lingering, murmuring among themselves as they processed what had just happened. Jerome caught a few of their eyes—some with admiration, others with concern. It was a strange feeling to be the center of attention, but in that moment, she realized that her place in this world was starting to solidify. She wasn't just a bystander anymore.
"You stood up to Aiden," a familiar voice called out from the crowd. Jerome turned to see Clara approaching, her expression a mix of disbelief and awe. "That was… brave."
Jerome smiled weakly, the adrenaline crash making her feel exhausted. "I didn't really have a choice. Someone had to."
Clara nodded, her gaze flicking to Ian. "Aiden won't forget this. Be careful. He's dangerous when he feels cornered."
Ian's jaw tightened. "I know. But we won't let him harm the pack—or Jerome."
Clara sighed, her eyes softening. "I'm glad you're standing by her, Ian. She's strong, but Aiden is ruthless. Don't underestimate him."
As Clara turned and rejoined the others, Ian's arm tightened around Jerome protectively. "I won't let anything happen to you," he murmured. "Aiden's been pushing his luck for too long. This ends now."
Jerome looked up at him, feeling the weight of his words. She knew Ian would do whatever it took to protect her, but there was a part of her that worried. Aiden was unpredictable, and his obsession with power—and with dominating the pack—would only grow more dangerous.
"Do you really think he'll back down?" Jerome asked softly, her fingers nervously fidgeting with the edge of her sleeve.
Ian's gaze darkened. "No. He won't. But I'll be ready for him."
Jerome shivered at the cold certainty in his voice. She trusted Ian, but she also knew that Aiden's hatred ran deep. He wasn't the type to let a challenge go unanswered, and his revenge could come when they least expected it.
The pack slowly dispersed, returning to their duties, but the underlying unease lingered. Jerome could feel the shift in the air—things were far from settled. If anything, Aiden's retreat had only been a temporary ceasefire.
As they walked back to their quarters, Jerome's mind raced. She had stood up to Aiden, but now she wondered what the cost would be. How far would he go to get what he wanted?
"Ian…" Jerome hesitated as they reached the door to their cabin, her hand resting on the doorknob. "What if Aiden tries something when we're not expecting it? He's not going to stop."
Ian stepped closer, brushing a soft kiss against her temple. "He'll come for us, Jerome. But we'll be ready. Together."
Jerome nodded, though a part of her couldn't shake the feeling that something darker was on the horizon. She had crossed a line with Aiden, and it was only a matter of time before he retaliated.
As they entered the cabin, Ian's strong presence calmed her nerves, but the nagging feeling of impending danger lingered in the back of her mind.
The battle between them and Aiden wasn't over. It had only just begun.
To be continued...
