Chereads / The Crimson Reaper / Chapter 41 - At the Crossroad

Chapter 41 - At the Crossroad

"Look, I don't know about you, but I'm going down there." Luciel growled at Melisa, pointing downwards with his fingers even if she couldn't see it since both of them were wearing blankets to protect themselves from the sun.

Luckily, it was late autumn so they weren't being cooked underneath them.

Without waiting for a response, Luciel jumped down from the house.

He didn't care if Melisa would follow him or not, he only wanted one thing - to help the humans.

"Whatever." Melisa hissed and decided to run away in the opposite direction. It wouldn't be her first time to end up alone, she still had her ability.

When she was about to flee, Melisa heard footsteps behind her, followed by angry growls.

"We can't talk this out, can we?" She asked, raising her hands into the air, wanting to avoid a fight if possible.

"No, we can't." One vampire answered, "Lady Seline didn't tell us that we are going to die today."

"Besides, even without looking at your face, I can tell that you are pretty. Maybe we can sell you to our supplier." The second vampire hissed.

Melisa sighed and slowly turned around. Peaking through her red blanket, she saw two masked vampires. Both of them were wearing all black, with not even a little bit of their skin exposed to the sun.

'That's one way to deal with it.' She thought as the three vampires got into a battle stance, waiting for someone to make the first move.

Melisa quickly looked left and right before returning her gaze toward the two vampires that were in front of her.

She took a big breath and before her enemies could react, she screamed at them.

The two vampires got pushed back by the loud sound waves she produced, causing them to fall down from the house.

"Bye-bye!" Melisa waved with her hand before running off, trying to run away before the two could recover.

Luciel was careful not to walk in the wind's direction, knowing that it could carry his scent and get him discovered more easily.

Once he found himself at the entrance of the abandoned factory, he heard Melisa's scream, making him turn his head towards her direction.

'Should I go after her?' Luciel debated, feeling like he was at the crossroad.

He bit his lower lip and shook his head. Melisa was a vampire, a strong one at that. Whatever comes her way, she should be able to deal with it.

Taking a big breath, Luciel sneaked in, staying close to the wall and behind every cover he could find while following the trace of blood.

While he was wandering around, he managed to find a big hall with lots of heavy machinery and belts.

Everything was rusty, with missing parts, it looked like it was going to fall apart any second now.

There in the middle that was cleaned from the machines, Luciel could see a familiar figure that he met the previous night after he had finished his training with Nosferatu.

In front of Lady Seline, he saw thirteen kids sitting on the floor, shivering and hugging each other, afraid for what was about to come.

The most noticeable feature about the kids was the fact that some wore a nice, expensive outfit while the other half had old and torn clothes, meaning that the vampires who took them didn't care whose kids those were.

Observing the kids, Luciel felt a moment of regret after seeing the big difference between the poor and the rich.

He tried his all to help them out, even donating all of his savings to charity, but it was simply not enough.

Those who had money had it all. They were living in modern, luxury homes, full of the latest technology and cars that could levitate while those on the bottom lived in fragile houses, barely able to afford electricity and food.

As the years went on, the inflation was becoming higher and the reveal of supernatural creatures didn't help either with vampires being the worst.

It was unknown what made the supernatural to attack the world, scientists have been trying to figure it out for around two thousand years, but to no avail.

"Oh, Luciel..." Lady Seline touched her lips, gazing over her shoulder to look at those pretty, crimson eyes of his.

'Why is he here?!' Along with her usual outfit - a red, silky long dress with brown hair falling right below her shoulders, a large circle earrings, she was also wearing a big red hat on top of her head.

"Wanna join?" She asked with a smooth voice, turning toward toward Luciel's direction. She could smell him.

'Will he kill me?' Seline thought, feeling panic settle into every fiber of her being. She peeked into Luciel's future and saw what he would become. Just knowing that sent chills down her spine.

"No thanks." He replied, slowly walking towards her, taking out the black sword with golden details in the middle that was gifted to him by Nosferatu. It wasn't good as a divine sword, but it will do.

The scene in front of Luciel made him feel furious as he was reminded of his past.

The torture and fear he went through in one of those human farms. Even if he started to get on more friendly terms with some vampires, this was something that he couldn't let go of.

Since he was already discovered, Luciel sighed and slowly got up, throwing the blanket he was wearing onto the floor before he finally revealed himself.

Lady Seline acted smooth as ever, but Luciel could hear her heartbeat that was going out of control. She was not simply afraid, she was terrified.

"Are you sure about that? We can always share, my king." Seline purred, bowing her head a little.

'Leave me alone!' She slowly took out a black, metal fan that she had hidden between her breasts. Opening it, she revealed pink cherry blossom branches that were drawn on it.

"Now why would I do that?" Luciel growled, allowing the wild nature of a vampire to come out on the surface, not feeling ashamed to reveal his fangs for once.

Arriving right in front of her, he pointed the tip of his sword right below her chin.

Seline gulped. She didn't want to get on Luciel's bad side, but she knew that it was over for her when he saw her with the kids.

'Damn you, Nosferatu.' She cursed in her head, if he had told her that Luciel was going to be inside Paradise, she would have never left the base.

Locking her eyes with Luciel's, she could see it. A faint shape of a thing he was going to become.

"A Crimson Reaper..." Seline's voice trembled as she said those words, taking a few steps back, getting away from the sword.

"Leave me alone!!!" She shouted with tears in her eyes, this was not how her story was supposed to end.

Luciel ignored Lady Seline and hissed before running forward, having a tight grip on his sword.

"Go away!" Not wanting to allow Luciel to get close, Seline made a strong swing with her war fan toward the ground, launching a thick needle at him with a loud bang.

Luciel's pupils widened when he saw a needle going straight towards his head in clear detail.

He stopped to approach Seline and made his stand, putting one leg in front as he got ready for an impact.

At the speed the projectile was going, there was no time to dodge, he could only take it head-on or block, and the first wasn't an option.

He quickly moved his sword in front of him, letting the needle hit the middle of his sword.

Using the moment while Luciel was distracted, Seline jumped back, landing on a big machine that was behind the terrified children.

Not allowing her opponent to catch a break, Lady Seline continued to fire needles at Luciel, greatly slowing him down.

'What should I do, what should I do...' She thought as she watched Luciel approaching her step by step despite the rain of needles she was throwing at him.

When Luciel got closer to the machinery that Seline was standing on, he continued to block each projectile she sent at him with his sword.

Seeing like she wouldn't stop her annoying attacks anytime soon, Luciel waited for the right moment between her shots.

There was a pattern, after every fourth shot, there was a small break, probably to recharge her ammunition.

One

'All all vampires like this?' Luciel thought, blocking the first shot before making a quick spin, getting ready to block another.

Two

'Is this their real nature?' He asked himself, thinking about all the vampires he had met - Nosferatu, Kai, Melisa. Are they all capable of doing something like this...

Three

'Will I become just like them too?' He was afraid... Luciel already knew the answer to this question - yes. If it weren't for his past and the horrors he witnessed, he would be already feasting on those children. He saw them as nothing more than chickens.

Four!

The fourth shot was fired and there was no time to think anymore.

After gracefully blocking the needle, Luciel quickly jumped up toward the machine that Seline was standing on.

'No, no, no, no! I don't want to die!' She was just about to shoot when he landed next to her, kicking her down in front of the children who were like frozen deer, having their eyes shut.

'Please, don't do this!' Seline landed into a crouching position, but before she could get up, Luciel was already next to her, kicking her in the ribs, sending her flying a few meters away as she landed on her back.

"Stay down." He hissed, sending her a death glare.

Seline tried to get up, but Luciel already got close and stomped her chest, pressing her against the cold floor, not allowing her to escape.

"Please don't kill me!" She shouted at the top of her lungs, finally revealing her real emotions that Luciel was already aware of.

He raised his sword with both hands and swung it towards the vampire, but right when he was about to cut her head off, he stopped.
