Beep!! Beep!!
"I'm starting to hate this sound even more now. If I am going to die, why wouldn't you make it work faster."
Leaning to his side in desperation, Justin stared blankly at the window. He was conscious of how much time he had to live, and the pain of pulling through each day was overwhelming.
Dreaming constantly of a chance to walk on those plated streets, Justin wept as those thoughts filled his head. He had been involved in an accident a while ago as he was dispatched to another hospital.
In meeting this unfortunate end, he lost the strength to control his feet. As a cancer patient who became crippled, Justin gave up on living.
It was depressing for him to dream constantly of a chance to roam the world once more, but he couldn't stop himself. Those dreams filled him with joy as much as they gave him sadness, and he cherished every memory.
Although the world had given up on him, his parents constantly kept tabs. This brought Justin hope in living, at least he wanted to do that for the sake of his parents.
However, seeing them sad each time hurt him even more. Justin couldn't bear the pain of seeing his parents cry, and he loved them so much for all their efforts.
At this point, he had grown tired, and he wanted it all to end. At least that would give his parents rest and save them from the constant worry.
Closing his eyes slowly, Justin placed his hopes on escaping the tragic life he lived. Nevertheless, death was something that steered far from his grasp, and as such his suffering continued.
"How long will this be? Months, or even years, I have no idea. Ah, the sun is bright today. I wish I could play around like kids my age, but I am eighteen hahaha."
"Isn't that hilarious? Talking to myself since I am all alone. Ugh, I grow crazy as time passes in this room, when will it come for me?", Justin pondered.
"What's coming for you?"
"Ack!! Ghost!!!", Justin startled.
"I wish I was, hahaha. A pleasure to meet you mister???", the voice questioned.
"Justin?", he replied.
"That's a nice name. I am Anna, a nobody you shouldn't pay attention to.", she sighed.
"Well that's not a first", Justin nodded.
"You!! Ugh. I can see you are the annoying type."
Justin turned to his side, yet this time he could feel a female's voice from the cover of the curtain. Dividing the large room into two, a blue curtain was used to provide privacy for patients.
*She sounds feeble, but I can't say I am any different. Perhaps I can finally have a friend to joke around and play with, at least till I finally escape the pain of living*
The boy leaned over and sighed. His breath was unsteady and tense, but felt joy in meeting a stranger. Swinging to the side, the curtains revealed her scarlet eyes and red hair.
Justin was dumbfounded by her beauty, and his composure wavered sharply. Lost in her eyes, he stared unknowingly but gulped after he realized how awkward it had become.
"I heard girls like those. Aren't I good enough then?"
"You sound like a bachelor. You never had a girlfriend?"
"NEVER!!", Justin's eyes shot widely.
"That's depressing."
"I agree."
The two kids sat in thought, but they felt happy. Having someone to talk to cheer them up, and as time dragged on, their yearning for death grew weaker.
However, all became lost when Justin overheard a conversation between the doctors. Anna had a few days to live, and her weakened heart couldn't sustain her long enough.
Although he knew this, Justin couldn't just accept the fate bestowed. He searched for a way to help since Anna was his only friend. Two days passed swiftly, and Anna's fragility grew steadily.
Was there anything he could do to help her? He thought relentlessly on this topic, and after a few days, Justin brought his thoughts to a sincere conclusion.
Pleading with his parents on this topic, he suggested his heart should be transplanted into Anna. His parents were baffled by the things he mentioned and brushed it off as a useless idea.
There was no way they could stand for that. He was their only child, and to lose him was surely out of the norm. However Justin was strong-willed, and with an unending love for his family, he continuously pleaded.
After days of thought and sorrow, his parents finally agreed to help. They understood what their son wanted, and with this came satisfaction. Justin was satisfied, and his last words to his family held truth.
"I'm sorry I wasn't a better child for you two, but I promise I will be more than enough in my next life."
These words struck their hearts deeply, and with a deep embrace, they hugged their son. Feeling the warmth of his parents for the last time, Justin sobbed heavily.
He wished he was born to be better, and had a longer lifespan to cherish each moment. However, being eighteen was enough, at least it was long enough for him to meet someone new.
Justin was afraid, and his hands trembled as his parents exited the room. Death had finally approached his path, but at that moment he preferred another way.
Nevertheless, he fastened his resolve and held onto his pillow tightly. Due to Anna's weak stature, she was less active now and slept mostly. As a way to conserve the heart, the doctors prescribed it as the best way.
The night was calm and stale, with a cold breeze stroking the cotton-made curtains. Looking at the sleeping face of Anna, Justin prayed his last and passed on his hopes of living.
"If I could make choices, I would choose you as my survivor. Since you need a heart, I will give you mine, Anna. With that, we can be together forever."
Inscribing the words he spoke onto a piece of paper; Justin hid the envelope under his pillow. The following day was the day of the operation, and the lad had already given his all to the cause.
The sounds of whirling machines and clattering metals were all he heard. Justin's last moments were in the operating room, and as such he held the bed tightly.
"Anna wrote a letter as a sendoff, saying she loves you till the end of time. I hope this gives you peace, although she might be surprised to find herself rather alive.", a doctor smiled.
These last words caused him to tear up, and as he breathed his last, a tear dropped from his cheeks. Justin wasn't afraid anymore and had accepted the fate bestowed with pride.
Nyah!! Nyah!!
"Welcome to our family of two, my son. Your name shall be Thorne Woodlock!!"
