Chapter 1 - Snowy night

It was a dark night, a blizzard was raging on. My boots passed through the thick snow floor as I ran between the city blocks. I could hear their screaming through the streets. Seeing a large headlight shine behind me, I sprinted to my right between two buildings. I threw my rifle around my back, the strap keeping it from flying away. It was dark, so dark that i could barely see less than a foot away from me. I dragged my hand on the wall of the building until I could feel a door. My feet sank deeped into the ground as I felt a small step downwards. I stepped forward, feeling the harsh brick turn into the gritty rusty metal door.

I pushed it forward, it didnt budge. I saw the headlight getting closer. I pushed harder, nothing still, the sound of the its roaring reared closer. The loud clanking of is steps grew closer and closer. I stood back, gained as much footing as I could and rammed myself into the door. With a loud bang, the door swung open. A loud clank could be heard as the bolt to the door bounced on the ceramic floor. The dark alleyway suddenly became brighter as the light shined down it. Loud metallic whirring could be heard as even louder thuds approached as I ran upstairs.

I turned on my small flashlight as I went up each and every flight. Second floor, I tried opening every single door. Loud scratching could be heard down below, like fingernails on chalkboard, it loudly squeezed its way in. none of the doors opened. I turned off my flashlight and ran up once more. Third floor, nothing once more. Its footsteps quickened, its engine sped up as it started following me up, I could see the bright light shining up into the higher floors. I ran to the fourh floor, I tried every single door once more. The steps grew louder, it was only down the last bend. Every one was locked, and right as I thought hope was lost, the last door opened.

It wasnt quiet, a loud squeak came from the old hinges as it swung open. The machine stopped for a second, almost thinking. I slammed the door shut behing me, a bookcase sat on the right, I pushed it closer and threw it down, barricading the door. Fighting outside was unthinkable, but inside, I had a better chance. The place was small, I tried flicking on the light switch, knowing nothing would happen, but hoping for a miracle. Of course, no light, it had been a long time since the last time the cities had any power. A short hallway, about 20 feet straight, almost next to the dooro the left, a wide door which led to the kitchen. I turned on my flashlight and quickly scanned the room, empty, it looked ransacked. I moved on, not even three steps straight from there, a small closed door, I moved my coat from my hip and unholstered my pistol, My gloved finger wrapped around the trigger as I opened the door quickly. Empty, I checked the medicine cabinet, nothing inside.

Before I could think about what to do next, a loud slam hit the door. I stepped outside of the bathroom and lit the hallway up,I could see the door was now cracked open, the bookshelf had fallen a bit. Not one second after, another loud slam, the crack grew wider. I looked behind me to the last door in the hallway, I opened it quickly and ran inside. A large master bedroom, a large king sized bed with a tall wide window was on the left, a slim, tall wood closet stood by the door, and a big desk sat in front of the door. Without thinking about it, I pulled the wood closet a bit away. Yet another loud slam hit the door, this time, I could hear the bookshelf fall on the ground, Brightness filled the dark hallway. I pushed with all my force and tilted the closet until it fell. It slammed into the ground, the open door was blocked to waist height now. I dropped the pistol and unholstered my rifle as I heard it squeeze into the hallway slowly.

The sound of its whirring echoed through the mostly empty apartment. This one was equiped with a chainsaw, I could not have wished for better luck. I flipped the desk over and stood behind it, the light fell directly into my eyes as I stared down the sight of my rifle into the hallway. One step, two step, I could feel the floor of the apartment shake as it stepped slowly towards me, with one swift movement, the heavy bookshelf got torn to pieces. Three steps, four steps, the light grew wider as I tried to calm down, my arms became shaky as I tried to keep my sight straight. I would need to aim right for its visual module. Five steps, six steps, The loud sound of its engine roared through the room as it revved its saw, it slammed its hand down into the closet.

The saw tore through the thick wood barricade like it was butter, its hand moved trough in one slow motion. It's headlight aimed down, meaning that I could finally focus my view, it was now or never. A small glint came off it's "face," I held my breath, relaxed my arms and fired. The loud bang rattled and bounced off the walls of the room. The machine took a step back, it roared loudly as it's headlight "looked" into the ceiling. I could see it clearly, despite having having seen them dozens of times before.

A very tall metal structure, built like a fucked up replica a of a bodybuilder whose proportions are way off. It's right arm was as thick as a log of wood, from it, a short chainsaw revved surprisingly quietly, it was a well oiled machine. It's left arm was a simple hook for collecting whatever it was assigned. What was causing all the ruckus was its chest unit. A small but super loud engine roared loudly as it spun up. It wasn't made with regular fuel and neither did it look like a regular one. It was circular and constantly spinning, Gears which look more like the blades of a buzz saw, whatever was inside it fueling it was bright blue. The sounds that eminated from it sounded more like a distorted vacuum than those loud diesel ones we have at camp. What looked like a smaller but much brighter flooklight sat right on top of that. Before I could get a good look at it, it "looked" down violently. With a louder than ever whir of it's core, it sprinted at full speed down the hall. I rolled to my right as it slammed right through the desk, leaving a large dent at the wall. I was shocked that it didnt just burst right through it.

I sat silently, this meant it couldnt see anymore. It was still roaring, almost like it was screaming for help. I wasnt sure if they could communicate in any way, but I knew for sure that they could hear, and this commotion that it was causing was not doing me any favors. I sneaked around the room, right at the foot of the bed. My pistol sat right under where it was standing, it was no longer swinging its chainsaw around, but instead it picked with its claw in front of itself. It probably thought I was dead, I reached for my, but the machine stopped moving completely, almost thinking once again. I reached once again, and its engine grew louder and louder, like a crying child which grew louder and louder to get its mother's attention. I got my fingers around the handle of the gun, I looked at the window once more. It wailed loudly, earpiercingly so, and I tossed my gun at the window. It suddenly jumped up and dived straight in that direction. The gun bounced off the window, landing on the bed, but the machine went straight through it, I saw the light go a bit dimmer and the engine get quieter as it fell down. A very loud clank could be heard as it's body hit the floor.

The wind and snow rushed inside as I grabbed my pistol, I looked outside the window and down. The loud metallic whirring and the bright light slowly died down before succumbing to the darkness. I could hear more of them approacing. I stepped outside the apartment quickly and headed upstairs. I headed towards the roof and opened the maintenance door. I struggled against about 2 feet of snow piled up on the roof. It opened slowly, I could see the outside now, I closed the door behind me as I made sure all my layers kept me warm. I walked towards the edge of the building, I could see multiple of the lights getting closer. Tonight was not a night in which I could sleep.
