After the school assessed the damage, the students were allowed to return to class. It would be lunch after this period, so some of the kids were rowdier than usual.
Victor, Steve and Jon attended the only class they really cared about: PE. Wearing they uniform tee shirt and shorts, the three of them walked the laps around the track field. Any other student around them stayed a distance from them.
"I don't get it," Jon was going on about the situation earlier. "I thought Jasper was one of ours. When did he switch up?"
"Cuz he's a fucking traitor!" Vic responded. Every so often, he'd blur out of focus as he sped around the track.
"Dont be a dumbass." Jon said. "He didnt turn on us. He lost a match and his power card. That got him demoted to a number. But he'd never turn on us. He's probably just trying to get a new power so he can come back to us." Jon turned to Steve. "Right?"
Steve didn't say anything. He just stared on, his mind elsewhere.
"I heard he already got a new power," Victor announced. "And that he chose to stay with the diamonds instead of coming back to us. He probably thinks he's got it better there."
"I was wondering why he was wearing the Queen rank! I thought it was a fake or something."
Finally steve spoke. "Its not fake."
Vic and Jon exchanged glances.
"Are you gonna let him come back to us?" Victor asked.
"I dont have the power to do that, dumbass. And even if i did, i don't think he'd want to."
"Why not?"
Steve didn't answer except for a simple, "Because."
Across the field, a member fo the school's faculty apporahced the PE teacher. She whispered something to Ms Vonagan, who glanced over at the boys. The two of them argued about something for a few minutes until it looked like the faculty member won. She left hastily.
Ms Vonagan approached the boys, her arms crossed. "Boys," she asked ina sweet but venomous voice. "Where were you when the fire alarm went off?"
"We didn't start a fire!" Jon blurted.
Vonagan rolled her eyes. "I know that! There was a fucking hole in the wall the size of a fucking door! Now which one of you thought it was funny to destroy the boys bathroom?"
None of them said anything. They exchanged glances as they tried to formulate a lie.
"Answer me!" Vonagan snapped. The entire class all stopped and stared as flames erupted from her hair in a pillar of blue flames.
"It was me!" Victor yelped.
Voangan laid her eyes on him, two burning ovals that died down as she took a deep breath. Closing her eyes, she calmed her flames. Smoothing her dress skirt, she opened her eyes and feigned a smile.
"Are you telling me you put that hole in the wall?" her smile made Vic blanch. All he could do was nod his head. Vonagan turned to steve. "Is this true?"
The King of Spades nodded. "Yes, ma'am. Apparently he forgot that kinetic energy is released when it isn't stored."
"Honeslty, coach, i thought it'd-"
Vonagan raised a had to silence the boy. He flinched.
"You understand you're about to be suspended right? Even i cant stop this since the Dean herself decided the punishment."
Vic dropped his head. "Yes, ma'am."
"Now, run along to the office. And no dicking around." She let vic speed off to the office building .
"That was… a lot easier than I expected." Jon noted. "I thought he'd be demoted for that."
"Oh, he will be," Vonagan told Jon. "However i cant let him walk across campus without a high ranking insignia. He'd be eaten alive before by a Heart or even a Club before he reached eh office."
Vic exchanged glances with Steve.
"I'm also gonna request he give up his power card. We cant have him giving a bad name to the Spades with a high level power, can we?"
"No." Steve grumbled.
"No, ma'am!" Jon barked.
The two of them started to continue their laps, when Vonagan grabbed Jon's arm. Steve halted, staring at Vonagan. Jon stood paralyzed.
"Run along, stevie." The PE teacher sang. "Jon and i need to discuss something."
When Vonagan turned her head to smile at Steve, he had to fight a shudder. Her face twisted as he lips stretched from ear to ear.
Turning away, he said, "Sure thing coach." He left Jon and Vonagan alone; the teacher lead the boy to her office.
