The sun filtered through the ancient stained-glass windows of Violet Castle, casting multicolored beams of light across the polished marble corridors. Raimon walked alongside his father, Duke Raion, and his grandfather Alaric as they strolled through the expansive gardens surrounding their ancestral fortress. His friends—Morrison, March, and Mancil—followed closely, fascinated by the stories that emerged from every corner of this place steeped in history and magic.
During the days of waiting for the final preparations to hunt the Glacial Wolf, Raimon had taken the opportunity to delve deeper into the knowledge of their world and share it with his friends and family.
"Father, Grandfather," Raimon began as they paused before a statue of an ancient hero, "I've been researching the history of our world, and I believe it's important to understand how we got here to plan our future."
Alaric nodded with a smile. "It's always wise to learn from the past, Raimon. What do you have in mind?"
Raimon took a breath and began to narrate:
"Thousands of years ago, intelligent races rose up against the demonic beasts that dominated the world. It was a dark era where survival was a constant struggle. Over time, the different races—humans, elves, dwarves, and other intelligent beings—united to form Principalities, Kingdoms, and free, sovereign city-states. These alliances allowed them to establish civilizations and advance in magic, technology, and culture."
Morrison intervened, interested. "And that's how the Estelar Empire was born, right?"
"Exactly," Raimon replied. "The Estelar Empire was the pinnacle of human civilization. It managed to unify much of the continent under one banner, promoting knowledge and prosperity. However, its greatness didn't last forever. Internal corruption, power struggles, and the resurgence of demonic beasts led to its downfall. From its ashes, the current Solar Empire emerged, attempting to reclaim that lost splendor."
March, ever curious, asked, "And how does the current economy work? I've noticed that the value of coins varies greatly."
Raimon smiled, knowing this topic would be useful to them. "The monetary system is based on Imperial Solar Coins. The lowest value coin is copper. Then comes bronze, which is equivalent to 100 copper coins. A silver coin equals 100 bronze coins. In turn, 100 silver coins make one gold coin. After that is the magical white gold coin, equivalent to 100 regular gold coins. Finally, we have the Imperial platinum coin, which is extremely rare and used only in high-level transactions; it's worth 1,000 magical white gold coins."
Mancil nodded, impressed. "That explains why certain weapons and artifacts have such exorbitant prices."
"Exactly," Raimon continued. "Additionally, ancient coins from the Estelar Empire are worth twice as much as current ones due to their rarity and the high-quality metal with which they were minted."
As they advanced through the gardens, they arrived at a small clearing where several animals grazed peacefully.
"Our world is also inhabited by various creatures," Raimon said, pointing to the animals. "There are normal animals, like the ones we see here, but there are also magical animals that possess special abilities and can interact with magic. Then there are demonic beasts, which are classified into ranks: normal, lord, emperor, mythical, and ancestral."
Alaric interjected, his deep voice adding authority. "The Glacial Wolf Demon we'll face is of the emperor rank. We must not underestimate it. Beasts of this level can rival entire armies."
Raimon nodded. "That's why it's crucial that we're prepared. But beyond military strength, I've been thinking about how to strengthen our duchy in other ways."
Raion raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "What do you mean, son?"
"During my time at the Institute and through my research, I've gathered ideas to improve our economy and the well-being of our people. With the knowledge I possess, we could implement more efficient farming systems, improve artisanal techniques, and establish new trade routes. But there's something else I want to propose."
Alaric and Raion exchanged glances. "Go on," Raion said.
"I want to found a bank that's different from the existing ones. Currently, banks only serve to exchange currencies and store civilians' money. Nobles like us keep our wealth in family vaults. But if we create a financial institution that offers loans, project financing, and manages investments, we could boost the economic growth of our territory and help our subjects prosper."
Raion crossed his arms, considering the proposal. "It's an ambitious idea. Do you think our people are ready for something like that?"
"With proper education and guidance, yes," Raimon affirmed. "Additionally, we could attract merchants and artisans from other regions, increasing our influence and wealth."
Alaric smiled proudly. "I see you're thinking beyond the sword and magic, Raimon. That's good. A leader must care for his people in all aspects."
Raimon's friends watched with admiration. Morrison spoke up. "Raimon, your ideas could change how the duchies operate. If you manage to implement them, you could set a precedent for the entire Empire."
"That's the plan," Raimon said with determination. "But first, we must ensure our territory is safe and prepared for these changes. Hunting the Glacial Wolf is a priority to strengthen our forces."
Raion nodded. "Very well. I support your initiatives. We'll work together to establish this bank and improve our lands. But remember, we must be cautious. Drastic changes can generate resistance."
"I understand, Father. That's why I want to count on your experience and wisdom to bring this to fruition."
The rest of the day passed in debates and planning. Raimon, his father, and his grandfather discussed economic strategies, while his friends contributed ideas from their own perspectives. They talked about improving infrastructure, investing in magical and martial education, and establishing alliances with other noble houses and merchants.
During dinner in the great hall, under the flickering lights of crystal chandeliers, the atmosphere was one of camaraderie and hope. Servants served exquisite dishes as conversations flowed animatedly.
"And what about the demonic beasts attacking the peripheral villages?" March asked. "If we want to attract more people, we must guarantee their safety."
Raimon nodded. "Good point. I've thought about establishing regular patrols and creating outposts with well-trained knights. Additionally, with the Frisians and new training methods, our forces will be more effective."
"Not to mention that Tomas's presence, once he completes his transformation, will be a great deterrent to any threat," Mancil added.
The mention of Tomas brought up the imminent hunt.
"We'll depart north tomorrow," Alaric announced. "Preparations are ready, and the Glacial Wolf won't wait forever."
Raimon looked at his friends and family, feeling a mix of excitement and responsibility. "We're ready. This journey will not only strengthen Tomas but also consolidate the future of our duchy."
Raion raised his glass. "To the success of our mission and the future of the Flower Duchy."
Everyone lifted their glasses, sealing with that toast a shared commitment.
The night progressed, and gradually the diners retired to rest. Raimon stayed a moment longer, contemplating the dancing flames of the fireplace. He felt that a new era was approaching, not just for him and his family but for the entire Empire. With the right decisions and the support of his loved ones, he was determined to forge a path that would lead his world toward a bright future.
