Chapter 42 - Threads of Responsibility

The mid-autumn sun cast a warm glow over the Ducal Institute, its golden rays filtering through the stained-glass windows of the library. Raimon sat at a secluded table, stacks of parchment and ledgers spread before him. The soft murmur of students in the distance provided a soothing backdrop as he delved into the reports sent by Tomas.

Three months had passed since his arrival at the institute, and Raimon had adapted well to the rhythm of academic life. Mornings were filled with theoretical classes on history, magic, and strategy. Afternoons were dedicated to sword practice and martial training. His evenings, however, were reserved for matters of a different nature.

He unfolded a detailed financial report, the crisp parchment rustling softly. Tomas had been thorough, as always. The figures indicated substantial monetary gains from various investments and ventures Raimon had initiated before leaving for the institute. Profits from trade agreements, resource management, and discreet alchemical enterprises were exceeding projections.

"Impressive," Raimon mused quietly. The capital would be crucial for funding his growing endeavors.

Turning to the next document, his eyes scanned the updates on the Order of Knights he had been cultivating in secret. The order now numbered 350 individuals—a formidable force in its own right.

At the forefront was Tomas, who had advanced to the peak of Silver Rank. His purification sword aura, personally taught by Sir Leon—his grandfather's trusted aide—was a testament to his dedication and potential. Tomas had proven himself not only a capable leader but also a steadfast friend.

The report detailed the composition of the order:

Tomas: Peak Silver Rank Knight with purification sword aura.10 Beginner Silver Rank Knights: Aged between 20 and 25, recruited from the family's knight camp, each demonstrating exceptional skill and loyalty.50 Bronze Rank Knights: A mix of beginners and advanced trainees, primarily composed of the orphans Raimon had taken under his wing.Remaining Members: Squires, support staff, and trainees progressing steadily through the ranks.

Raimon felt a surge of pride reading about their progress. The training regimens he and Tomas had devised were yielding results, strengthening not only their combat abilities but also their unity and morale.

However, a section of the report caught his attention—disturbances in the southern villages of the duchy. There had been sightings of demonic beasts of considerable size and danger. Attacks on livestock, destruction of property, and even a few disappearances had been reported.

"Troubling," Raimon muttered, his brow furrowing.

He read Tomas's observations:

"Local authorities are ill-equipped to handle the threat. The beasts are larger and more aggressive than typical sightings. Recommend deploying a contingent to investigate and secure the area."

Raimon leaned back, contemplating his next move. The institute allowed students periodic breaks, and his next two-day leave was approaching. It was the perfect opportunity to address the issue personally.

He penned a swift response to Tomas:

"Prepare our strongest knights. I will join you to investigate the disturbances in the southern villages. Discretion is paramount. We depart in three days."

Sealing the letter with his personal sigil, he summoned a trusted courier to ensure its prompt and secure delivery.

As he gathered the documents, Kira approached quietly, a curious expression on her face.

"Burning the midnight oil again?" she teased gently.

Raimon offered a small smile. "Just attending to some family matters."

She glanced at the array of papers. "Anything you wish to share?"

He hesitated briefly. Kira and Cedric had become his closest confidants at the institute, but he still guarded certain aspects of his activities.

"There's been some trouble in our southern territories," he admitted. "I'm considering paying a visit during the upcoming break."

Her eyes reflected concern. "Is it serious?"

"Possibly. Some reports of aggressive beasts causing havoc."

"Do you need assistance?" she offered sincerely.

"I appreciate it, but I don't want to involve you unnecessarily. Besides, it's likely just a routine matter."

She studied him for a moment before nodding. "Very well. But if you change your mind, you know where to find me."

"Thank you, Kira."

As she departed, Raimon couldn't help but feel a twinge of guilt for not being entirely forthcoming. Yet, he knew that involving others could complicate matters, especially given the need for discretion.

The following day, Raimon sought out Cedric during a break between classes. They sat beneath a sprawling oak tree, the autumn leaves drifting lazily around them.

"I'll be away for a couple of days," Raimon informed him casually.

Cedric raised an eyebrow. "Family business?"

"Something like that. Just tending to some issues back home."

"Need any backup?" Cedric inquired, a hint of eagerness in his tone.

Raimon chuckled softly. "Always ready for action, aren't you?"

"Can't help it. Academy life can be... stifling at times."

"I appreciate the offer, but it's nothing I can't handle."

Cedric regarded him thoughtfully. "You know, you don't have to shoulder everything alone."

"I know," Raimon replied, his gaze distant. "But some burdens are mine to bear."

"Fair enough. Just remember we're here if you need us."

"Thank you, Cedric."

As the bell signaled the start of the next class, they rose and made their way back to the main building.

That evening, Raimon prepared for his departure. He packed light, opting for practical attire suitable for travel and potential combat. He secured his sword—a finely crafted blade imbued with subtle enchantments—and donned a cloak bearing his family's crest.

Before retiring for the night, he penned letters to his father and grandfather, informing them of his intentions and assuring them of his discretion.

As he sealed the letters, a soft knock echoed at his door.

"Enter," he called.

Amelia stepped inside, her expression composed yet inquisitive.

"Good evening, Lord Raimon."

"Amelia," he acknowledged. "What brings you here at this hour?"

"I noticed you seemed preoccupied today," she began. "I wanted to ensure everything is alright."

He regarded her carefully. "I appreciate your concern. Just attending to some family affairs."

She nodded subtly. "If there's anything the institute can assist with, please don't hesitate to ask."

"Your offer is generous, but it's a personal matter."

"Understood." She paused briefly before adding, "Safe travels, then."

Surprised, Raimon asked, "How did you—"

She offered a faint smile. "It's part of my role to be observant. Your preparations didn't go unnoticed."

He exhaled softly. "I see. Thank you."

As she departed, Raimon couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to Amelia than met the eye.
