Was this that revenant thing? It say I can have three.
Eager to see what was going to happen I hurriedly chose Yes.
Suddenly, the air fell silent, and our surroundings chilled. It was as if the entire desert had been momentarily swallowed by an eerie stillness.
In front of me, the raven's corpse began emitting a cloud of black smoke. The next moment, a dark creature of death came digging his way out of the raven.
As the creature unearthed its own corpse, a strange, unsettling sense of connection stirred within me. At the same time, I got a system alert.

It felt as if someone was stabbing into my soul, trying to merge itself with me. My legs buckled, and I collapsed down on the sandy ground. At the same time, the Raven in front of me disappeared into a cloud of smoke before launching towards my arm and turning into a tattoo.
The pain soon subsided, and I slowly got up on my feet, carefully inspecting my arm and the crazy tattoo I had just gotten.

New Spell Received- Static Timefall

Another system notification caused me to look back up on the screen. Spell? What did that mean?
I once again opened up my status screen.

Was this how the Eternal Rebirth worked? To be fair I already have some similar guesses, considering how I had gotten this from a necromancer and how the skill was named Eternal Rebirth.
Still, what I didn't understand was the spell part. My status screen wasn't showing a panel for Affinities. Did that mean I could only use a spell after killing and extracting someone's revenant?
I concentrated and summoned the raven. The tattoo disappeared, and the Raven appeared in front of me.
"Alright lets see." I pulled up more deeply on our connection only to realize I could see myself from its eyes standing in front of him.
"So we can share visions and other sensory feelings, that's good."
I mentally gave it a command and the Raven shot up in the sky, circled around three times and landing back in front of me.
"And I can mentally command it. Good, now let's check that spell." Once again, I pulled on our connection and tried to cast a spell. Alas, nothing happened; I didn't even feel a single drop of my mana being sucked away somewhere.
"That's weird; why was this not working?" Confused, I started trying a couple of things when several fluttering wings pulled my attention away.
Up in the distance, I saw thousands of Storm Ravens flying ahead, rushing in my direction.
"Oh no." I immediately recalled the raven back onto my arm and started running. Seems like this one hadn't been separated for long.
I rushed towards the fort in the distance, putting everything I had in my legs.
Behind me, the flock was closing in. Just killing one of them had been terrible enough. I couldn't imagine what the thousands of them would do to me.
Seemed like they had noticed my presence as well. The previous uncoordinated flock began spearheading in my direction at tremendous speed. I had experienced firsthand how fast these things were.
At this rate, I wasn't going to make it. I needed to use that spell. I once again pulled at my connection with the Raven, trying my best to look for anything.
"Could it be?" I cast the spell once more, praying in my head for it to work.
At once my surroundings seemed to slowed down, at the same time my mana began drying up. Turning around the only one seemed to be flying in normal speed were the birds.
So that's what it was. I couldn't use the spell unless the revenant was in my body. This means that in combat, I could either summon the revenant or cast the spell.
But now wasn't the time for these thoughts; slamming them at the back of my mind, I concentrated on the spell. This one seemed like an agility-enhancement spell. At the same time, it also seemed to slow down my perception of the world.
This was the lifesaver I needed. Focusing hard on the spell, I kept running and running. The flock was catching up to me, their caws and the fluttering of their wings loud enough to drench my back in sweat.
Fortunately, I managed to reach the fortress on time. Running past the broken wall, I climbed up the stairs and entered the broken building. Hoping the old door was enough to hold the ravens, I shut it close almost in time to hear the sound of birds smacking into it.
Phew, I let out a deep breath and sat down on the floor. I was exhausted, that spell had taken way more mana than I had anticipated.
After resting for a while, I got up. The Ravens were still hollering outside so I decided to explore the castle. Although the official map described this place as safe and empty I wasn't going to spend the night in here without confirming it first.
It took me a while to check the insides, or at least the part where I was planning to spend the night.
Once I was sure, I entered one of the rooms and bolted the door behind me with some logs I had found lying around.
Only then was I able to relax. Sitting down, I had my dinner and began arranging my sleeping bag.
The raven had left by now, and mana was recovering at an acceptable amount. After once again making sure that everything was fine . I got into my sleeping bag and went to sleep.
--
It was late at night when a loud thud caused me to open my eyes. I immediately jumped out of my sleeping bag and rushed to the door. It was still bolted shut; that was a good thing.
I could hear some voices outside, a conversation. Humans, these were humans talking with each other.
Were they friendly or dangerous? Not wanting to take the risk, I put on my face-changing ring and waited, listening.
"You, behind the door. Identify yourself."
The sound of a gruff man made my blood freeze. How did he know I was in here? Did he have some sensing ability?
Before I could even finish my thought, the door burst open from its hinges, causing me to be flung back into the room.
Gathering myself, I immediately got up and took out my knife, Static Timefall, ready to be activated at a moment's notice.
Only I didn't, cause of the person that walked inside the room, surrounded by a two men and a woman, all of them dressed in armor.
With long red hair that flowed past her shoulders, piercing blue eyes that seemed to look through your soul and a sword on her back. I didn't need Roye's memories to know who she was.
Standing in front of me was 'Aria Nyrith,' the second daughter of the Nyrith household.
And my Ex-Fiance.
