Chapter 85 - CHAPTER 85: SHADOWS IN THE NIGHT

The estate was unusually still as the moon hung high in the sky, its silver light casting long, ghostly shadows. Most nights, the estate was a quiet yet lively place, with guards patrolling, servants finishing their duties, and the occasional muffled sound of laughter echoing from the living quarters. Tonight, however, it was eerily silent, as if the world itself was holding its breath.

Kazuki sat cross-legged in the dimly lit training hall, his katana resting across his lap. A single lantern flickered beside him, casting a warm glow over his face. His eyes, however, were not on the blade but on the distant mountains visible through the hall's open doors. Thoughts of the shadow warriors plagued him, their ominous presence growing with each passing day. Their attacks were calculated, relentless, and, worst of all, unpredictable.

"Why are they waiting?" Kazuki muttered to himself, his voice barely audible.

He clenched his fists. For weeks, they had fortified the estate, trained tirelessly, and scouted for any sign of the enemy. Yet, no attack had come. The anticipation gnawed at him, each passing day feeling like a coiled spring ready to snap.

"Kazuki."

The soft, familiar voice startled him. He turned to see Ayame standing in the doorway, her slender frame silhouetted by the moonlight. She wore a loose robe, her hair unbound and flowing over her shoulders.

"You're awake too?" he asked, though he already knew the answer. Ayame had been as restless as he was since the last skirmish.

She stepped inside, her bare feet making no sound on the polished wooden floor. "I couldn't sleep. Too much on my mind."

Kazuki gestured for her to sit, and she joined him on the floor. The two sat in silence for a moment, the tension between them palpable.

"You've been carrying too much," Ayame said finally, her voice gentle but firm. "You're not alone in this, Kazuki. You don't have to do everything yourself."

Kazuki gave a tired smile. "It feels like I do. If I don't, who will?"

Ayame placed a hand on his arm, her touch warm and steady. "We will. Haruto, Aiko, me—we're all here for you. Don't shut us out."

Her words lingered in the air long after she left, leaving Kazuki alone with his thoughts once more.

The tranquility of the night was shattered by a piercing whistle that sliced through the air. Kazuki's eyes snapped open, his hand instinctively reaching for his katana. The whistle was followed by the unmistakable sound of shouting and the clash of steel.

Kazuki bolted out of the training hall, his bare feet pounding against the wooden floor. He grabbed his armor and strapped it on as he ran, his mind racing. By the time he reached the courtyard, the estate was a scene of chaos. Guards were shouting orders, torches were being lit, and the clang of weapons filled the air.

"Shadow warriors," Kazuki muttered under his breath, his grip tightening on his katana.

He quickly spotted Haruto in the thick of the battle, his dual swords flashing as he cut down one enemy after another.

"Haruto!" Kazuki called out, joining him.

Haruto grinned, his face streaked with sweat and blood. "Took you long enough! They're testing us again."

Kazuki nodded grimly. "Then let's make sure they regret it."

The two fought side by side, their movements fluid and precise. Kazuki's katana struck like lightning, each blow calculated and deadly. Haruto's dual swords whirled like a storm, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

"Kazuki, behind you!" Ayame's voice rang out.

Kazuki spun just in time to deflect a blade aimed at his back. Ayame joined them, her naginata spinning in graceful, deadly arcs.

"This isn't a full-scale attack," she shouted over the din. "They're probing us, looking for weaknesses."

"Then we give them none," Kazuki replied, his voice firm.

The battle raged for what felt like hours, though it was likely only minutes. The shadow warriors were skilled and relentless, but the estate's defenders held their ground. Finally, as the first light of dawn began to creep over the horizon, the enemy retreated as quickly as they had appeared.

In the aftermath, the courtyard was littered with bodies, both friend and foe. The surviving guards began the grim task of clearing the area, their faces weary but determined.

Kazuki, Haruto, Ayame, and Lord Takamura gathered in the main hall to assess the situation. The lord's face was ashen, but his eyes burned with resolve.

"This was a deliberate move," Lord Takamura said, his voice steady despite the tension in the room. "Their leader is testing us, gauging our strength."

"They'll come back," Ayame added. "And next time, it won't just be a test."

Haruto slammed his fist on the table. "Then we need to strike first. Take the fight to them before they can regroup."

Kazuki shook his head. "We can't risk it. We don't know enough about their numbers or their movements. A reckless attack could cost us everything."

Ayame nodded. "We need information. Scouts to track their movements, spies to infiltrate their ranks."

Lord Takamura agreed. "I'll send my best men to gather intelligence. In the meantime, we must strengthen our defenses and prepare for the worst."

The days that followed were a blur of activity. Guards patrolled the estate around the clock, blacksmiths worked tirelessly to repair weapons and armor, and the warriors trained harder than ever before.

One evening, Haruto approached Kazuki with a mischievous grin and a bottle of sake in hand.

"You've been too serious lately," Haruto said, plopping down beside Kazuki. "Time to loosen up a bit."

Kazuki raised an eyebrow. "Now? Of all times?"

"Especially now," Haruto replied, pouring two cups of sake.

Ayame joined them, and the three sat around a small fire, the tension of the past days melting away, if only for a little while.

"To surviving another day," Haruto said, raising his cup.

"To surviving many more," Ayame added with a smirk.

Kazuki chuckled, the weight on his shoulders feeling slightly lighter.

Later that night, Kazuki stood alone on a balcony overlooking the courtyard. The stars above were impossibly bright, their light a stark contrast to the darkness of the world below.

Aiko joined him, her presence as calming as the breeze. She didn't say anything at first, simply standing beside him and looking up at the stars.

"You've been pushing yourself too hard," she said finally, her voice soft.

Kazuki sighed. "I don't have a choice. If I falter, everything falls apart."

Aiko placed a hand on his arm, her touch warm and reassuring. "You're not alone in this, Kazuki. You have people who care about you. Trust us to help."

Her words lingered in his mind as he returned to the training hall. The battle ahead would be the hardest he had ever faced, but for the first time in a long while, he felt a glimmer of hope.
