Chapter 15 - Through the Veil

---

The oppressive silence of the darkwoods lifted as Lian pressed deeper into its heart. Each step brought a sense of urgency, the looming confrontation with Aeris gnawing at his mind. The shadows might have retreated, but the forest still felt alive with danger—whispers on the wind, flickers of movement just out of sight. Yet Lian remained focused, his eyes fixed on the distant clearing where the shrine awaited him.

The Eye of the Abyss pulsed steadily beneath his cloak, a constant reminder of the power he now carried. It felt like a second heartbeat, cold and foreign, yet somehow a part of him. The shadows had tried to claim him, but the Eye had given him control—at least, for now. But there was a price to this power, and Lian knew he would soon face the true cost.

As he approached the clearing, the mist thickened, swirling around him like a living thing. The air grew colder, each breath stinging his lungs. Lian could sense it—the veil between worlds was thinning. The closer he got to the shrine, the more the boundaries between the physical world and the abyss blurred.

When Lian finally stepped into the clearing, the sight took his breath away.

The shrine was unlike anything he had ever seen. Built from ancient stone, its structure was weathered and crumbling, yet it radiated a dark, unearthly energy. Tall, jagged spires jutted out from the ground around it, forming a circle that seemed to trap the very air within. The sky above was a roiling mass of dark clouds, casting the shrine in a permanent shadow.

In the center of the shrine stood Aeris.

She was shrouded in darkness, her figure barely visible against the swirling mist that enveloped her. The relic's influence was clear—her eyes glowed with a deep, unnatural light, and her body seemed to shift and waver, as if caught between worlds.

Lian's heart clenched at the sight. This was not the Aeris he knew. The darkness had taken her, twisted her, but he could still feel her presence buried beneath the shadows.

"Aeris!" Lian called, his voice cutting through the mist.

She didn't respond, her gaze distant, as if she couldn't see or hear him. The shadows around her pulsed in time with the Eye in Lian's hand, as if the two were connected by some unseen force.

Lian took a step forward, but the air around the shrine suddenly shifted. A wave of energy slammed into him, knocking him back. He stumbled, barely managing to keep his footing as the force pressed down on him.

"You can't save her," a voice echoed from the darkness. "She belongs to the abyss now."

Lian looked up, his eyes narrowing. A figure stepped out from behind one of the spires—tall and cloaked, its face hidden in shadow. The presence was familiar, yet twisted, as if the very air around it recoiled.

"Who are you?" Lian demanded, his hand tightening on his sword.

The figure tilted its head, its glowing eyes fixed on him. "I am the one who watches, the one who guides the relics of the abyss. You think you can wield its power, boy? You are nothing but a puppet, like her."

Lian's heart raced, but he forced himself to stand tall. "I'm no puppet. And neither is Aeris. I came here to free her, and I won't let you stop me."

The figure's laugh was low and cold. "Free her? She is already free. Free of the light, free of the lies that bind this world. The abyss has shown her the truth."

Lian's jaw tightened. "She's trapped in the shadows. That's not freedom."

The figure spread its arms, the shadows around it growing darker, more oppressive. "You cannot understand the truth of the abyss. But soon, you will. The Eye has chosen you, Lian. You cannot escape it. It will consume you, just as it has consumed her."

Lian's grip on the Eye tightened. He could feel the darkness pressing in on him, the weight of the abyss pulling at his soul. But he refused to give in. He had come too far, fought too hard to lose now.

With a deep breath, he stepped forward, holding the Eye out before him.

"Aeris!" he shouted, his voice filled with desperation. "I'm here! Fight it! Don't let the shadows take you!"

For a moment, nothing happened. Aeris remained still, her eyes fixed on the ground, unseeing.

But then, slowly, her head lifted. Her glowing eyes met Lian's, and for a brief moment, the shadows around her flickered.

"Lian..." her voice was soft, barely audible, but it was enough.

Lian took another step forward, hope surging through him. "Aeris, it's me. I know you're still in there. Fight it. I'll get you out."

But as soon as the words left his mouth, the shadows around her surged, pulling her back. The figure in the cloak laughed, the sound sending a chill down Lian's spine.

"She is mine, Lian. And soon, you will be too."

Lian's heart pounded, but he refused to back down. He could still see Aeris, still feel her presence beneath the shadows. He had to believe there was a way to save her.

With a deep breath, he focused on the Eye in his hand. Its power surged through him, cold and relentless, but he didn't fight it. Instead, he embraced it, letting it fill him.

The shadows around the shrine pulsed, reacting to the Eye's energy. The figure in the cloak faltered, its form flickering.

"You don't know what you're doing!" the figure hissed, its voice filled with anger.

Lian didn't respond. He stepped forward, his gaze locked on Aeris. The shadows around her recoiled as the light from the Eye grew stronger, brighter. Slowly, the darkness began to peel away, revealing the girl he had once known.

"Aeris..." Lian whispered, his heart aching with every step.

But before he could reach her, the figure in the cloak roared in fury. The shadows surged around it, and in an instant, the figure was upon him, its hands clawing at the Eye.

Lian stumbled back, his grip on the relic slipping. The figure's strength was overwhelming, its form a mass of pure darkness. But Lian refused to let go. He tightened his hold on the Eye, focusing all his energy on its power.

With a final surge of will, Lian pushed the figure back, the light from the Eye exploding outward in a burst of pure energy.

The shadows screamed, their form disintegrating in the light. The figure recoiled, its form dissolving into the mist.

And then, just as quickly as it had begun, it was over.

The shrine was quiet once more, the air still and heavy. Lian stood there, panting, the Eye pulsing weakly in his hand. But when he looked up, his heart leaped in his chest.

Aeris stood before him, her eyes clear and bright.

"Lian..." she whispered, her voice soft but full of relief.

Lian rushed forward, pulling her into his arms. "You're safe," he whispered, his heart swelling with emotion. "You're finally safe."
