Chapter 37 - The talk

Aaron leaned against the wrought iron gates of Hera Academy, the cool metal pressing into his back as he took a drag from his cigarette. The smoke curled around him like a protective shroud, but it did little to mask the storm brewing inside. He stared out at the bustling street, his mind occupied with thoughts that danced between frustration and longing.

It was a crisp afternoon, the sunlight casting a warm glow over the campus, but he felt the chill of uncertainty in the air. He was waiting for someone, though he wasn't quite sure why he felt the need to be here, in this spot—where he and Faerie had shared so many heated moments.

Just then, he caught sight of her. Faerie approached with that signature confidence that made his heart race and his resolve waver. Her hair glinted like spun gold in the sunlight, and a mischievous smile played on her lips.

"Miss me already?" she quipped, her voice light and teasing as she came to a stop in front of him.

He raised an eyebrow, smirking as he took another drag from his cigarette. "Maybe I did," he replied, his voice low and casual, though his heart was anything but.

Faerie stepped closer, her eyes sparkling with mischief. "You sure you weren't just hoping for a little company?"

"Can you blame me?" Aaron shot back, the tension in the air thickening as he leaned in, their faces inches apart.

"Not at all," she murmured, a hint of playfulness lacing her words. "So, what's a guy like you doing waiting around? Looking for a good time?"

He chuckled, the sound rumbling deep in his chest. "Always. Want to join me?" He extended the pack of cigarettes toward her, a sly grin on his face.

"Why not?" she said, taking one and leaning in close as he lit it for her. Their fingers brushed, sending a jolt of electricity between them. She took a deep drag, her eyes never leaving his, the smoky exhale escaping her lips like a whispered secret.

"You know," Aaron said, his tone shifting to something more serious, "I've always wondered what goes on in that head of yours."

Faerie tilted her head, an intrigued expression crossing her face. "Careful, Aaron. You might not like the answer."

"Try me," he challenged, stepping even closer.

Their flirtation intensified as they exchanged playful banter, the atmosphere thick with tension and desire. The world around them faded away, leaving just the two of them locked in this moment.

"Are you always this mysterious?" he asked, his voice lowering to a sultry whisper.

"Only with you," she teased back, her eyes sparkling with mischief.

"Good to know I have that effect," he replied, his breath hitching slightly as she moved closer, their lips nearly touching.

"Maybe I'll show you just how much," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

And then it happened—without thinking, he closed the distance between them, capturing her lips with his in a passionate kiss. It was a collision of warmth and urgency, an electric spark igniting between them as they melted into each other. Faerie tasted like the sweet hint of smoke and something intoxicatingly addictive.

As they pulled away, both breathless and exhilarated, Aaron's heart raced. He could see the fire in her eyes, a reflection of the wild, reckless abandon that had drawn him to her in the first place.

"Damn," he breathed, trying to regain his composure. "That was… unexpected."

"Maybe you should expect the unexpected more often," she replied coyly, her smile wide and playful.

His gaze softened as he watched her, the weight of his reality crashing back down. "You have no idea what I'm going through, do you?"

Faerie's expression shifted, curiosity sparking in her eyes. "Try me. What's got you so worked up?"

Aaron hesitated, the playful banter falling away as the gravity of his situation settled in. "It's just… everything. The pressure at home, my family's expectations. They think I should be someone I'm not. Sometimes I feel trapped, like I'm just living up to a name and not being myself."

"Sounds heavy," Faerie replied, her voice softening. "You don't have to carry that weight alone, you know."

"I know," he admitted, glancing away as he crushed his cigarette beneath his shoe. "But it's hard to trust anyone with that kind of stuff. You don't even know half of it."

Faerie stepped closer, her expression serious. "You can trust me, Aaron. Whatever it is, I'm here for you."

He looked into her eyes, the sincerity of her words washing over him. "It's just… there are days when I wonder if I'll ever be free of this. I'm tired of being the perfect son, the model student. I just want to be me for once."

"Then be you," she urged, reaching out to touch his arm, grounding him. "Don't let anyone else define you. You have the power to change things."

He swallowed hard, feeling a mix of vulnerability and gratitude. "You make it sound so simple."

"Because it is," she insisted, her voice unwavering. "You just have to take the leap."

"Maybe I'll take that leap with you," he suggested, the corners of his mouth lifting into a tentative smile. "After all, you're not so bad to be around."

"I could say the same about you," Faerie teased, her playful demeanor returning.

As they stood there, surrounded by the bustle of students and the fading light of the day, Aaron felt a glimmer of hope. Maybe this was the start of something new, something that could pull him away from the suffocating expectations and towards a future that felt more like him.

"Let's get out of here," he said suddenly, the urge to escape the confines of the academy surging within him.

"Where to?" she asked, her eyes lighting up with excitement.

"I don't know yet," he admitted, "but anywhere but here sounds perfect."

"Then let's go," she said, grabbing his hand and pulling him away from the gates. As they walked side by side, the world ahead felt full of possibilities—both exhilarating and terrifying.

But for the first time in a long time, Aaron felt alive. And with Faerie by his side, he was ready to embrace whatever came next.
